Chat something incredible has happened over the past couple of days.
Right here, Arc Raiders head praises unusual marathon turnaround.
This is real.
I actually saw this.
And the first comment that popped up on that tweet was, what turn around?
It's hard not to pit Arc Raiders and Marathon against each other and the extraction shooter
space for the obvious reason that they are both high profile genre games released in
the past year.
While this is mostly turned as a player count snipe in my fans, there's less conflict
going on between the companies themselves.
Now the ArcGrader Studio boss is praising Bungie.
In an interview with GameIndustry.biz, Patrick Sauterland, CEO of ArcGrader's developer
Embark Studios, had this to say about Bungie's marathon journey thus far.
I know their technical test last year was heavily criticized, Sauterland said.
Whether that was accurate or fair, I can't tell you.
But what I can tell you is that even though the feedback may be a little mixed, it
looks like the team has done a really good job of turning.
There was a big problem around in a very short period of time.
That's unusual.
So credit to that team and to the work that they have done with the game.
I hope that they do well.

Jesus Christ did well look developers understand other developers and and let
me just say I have just a very limited understanding of what happens behind the
scenes but I tell you what from the studios we've gone to and the developers
we've talked to which is hard to find out as you discuss kind of what you want
to see in a video game whatever that game may be is man everybody has as you
know big big aspirations big wants but unfortunately there's just so much
technical bullshit that can drag you down you know on me on the quest to
create the perfect game, there's just so much technical stuff that you have to go through.
That doesn't mean that you can't do it, it's just it takes a lot of time and a lot of testing.
And one thing I will add to this is I was surprised by coming from Destiny's PvP and
what's happened to Destiny's PvP.
I actually thought that Bungie just didn't know how to make a PvP game anymore.
I mean, have you seen Trials?
Marathon showed that there are definitely people at Bungie that still know how to cook
a PvP game, okay?
And I should have known this because the first time I played Marathon, we walked into the
playtest part of the studio, and I walked in and the first person who I see was Ninja
with Noel.
And I was like, hey, how'd you start working here?
And he's like, I've been with the marathon team for a while now and I was like, and if
you remember, Ninja with no L, he was a very good PVP player who played a destiny for years
and also play troughs.
And so I was like, and then I saw him saw a couple other like old PVP vets that played
a lot of destiny that were on the marathon team.
And then a bunch of just other just sweaty people that you may know.
And I was like, all right, they got people in here who know how to game.
That's why when I was telling you guys, if, you know what I mean, a lot of people in here
associate some of the old clips of Destiny's PvP, like Destiny developers playing PvP, and
go, nobody there knows how to shoot, you know, and I'm coming from, look, man, they
got gamers there, then, you know, especially now on the Destiny side and on the marathon
side.
He was a beast. He did my taxes and saved my marriage.
Oh, that's nice. That's nice. Okay.
Now, the technical test that Sauterland was referring to was the one that overlapped with ArcGrader's alpha,
which is a lot more praised than Bungie's marathon outing, which received a lot of negative feedback.
This, in part, led to the light from September to March, and many things were added that
players asked for, from proxy chat to a solo queue.
The fast reaction time has now extended to the game's actual release, and barely a week
Bundy has already altered UESC enemies to help change the ammo and health economy, buffed
the Rooks scavenger class and nerfed obnoxious thermal scouts.
They also added louder gunfire to encourage more PPP fights, but when fans said it
went too far, they immediately announced they would reduce it by some amounts to
be in the middle.
This has, incidentally, upset a lot of Destiny fans who have had to wait months or years
for long requested changes to be implemented, but Bungie is not doing that again with the
fast moving marathon where they need to secure a player base immediately.
Look, man, it's very obvious that Marathon is just built from the ground up.
Better.
It's just better, dude.
That's why I say like, part of the reason why I won a Destiny 3 is yes, for lore
reasons, narrative reasons, and just onboarding reasons, right?
But the other side of things, the big side of things is it needs to be built from the
ground up to house everything we want.
And it's very obvious that it can work, it can happen, but not under Destiny 2, some
brother.
I just don't see it, man.
Unless it did some massive overhaul to Destiny 2.
I just don't know if that can happen.
I feel like at this point, you just gotta go forward with the Destiny 3.
But back to Marathon.
Marathon shows just how nimble, how quick the team can, in fact, make changes when things
are built right the first time.
It hurts as a Destiny 2 player, but it absolutely needed for Marathon to survive.
Look at how much shit Tarkov gets when it takes you long to take something.
Well, look, I knew something was up years ago when Bungie was like, we're removing
master work from weapons.
And it was like, okay.
Why?
We have a data cap on weapons, it's like, and then there was like, I don't know, there's
like some item in the game that took him like a week or something to move, like just to physically
move it.
And I'm like, dude, what kind of spaghetti code is there?
How much duct tape is on Destiny 2 right now?
You know what I'm saying?
Marathon obviously doesn't have these issues.
It seems like everything, the way it was built here is built in a way where they can react
quickly and it needs to be that way.
Especially considering just the environment that that marathon is in.
Oh yeah, I mean we also have had a number of weapons inside of Destiny that have, Telesto
mainly, Telesto has broken the game many, many times.
Now, Sunderland goes on to discuss how Marathon is more focused on PVP than ARC, and there
are a lot of things in there that I actually like that they've done well.
I like that what I do in the game is linked to my progression.
There are many things in there that I actually think they've done a good job with.
It remains to be seen if ARC takes anything Marathon is doing and implements it into
its own game.
As Sunderland says, ARC has taken a turn toward leaning into PV while PVP is not quite
as intense or frequent.
Meanwhile is about to launch an ultra hard raid map full of the best players in the game plus a ranked mode
While it's clear the two operate in different spaces going more PvP hardcore may be limiting Marathon's player based on what even my guys
Arc Raiders was originally a PvE game. I

There were a lot of people have said about it, but it actually works for they're leading more tour PvE

Now, while I won't say this is a marathon-inspired, ARC also announced it had re-recorded a number
of its AI voice lines with human actors, something that has been criticized since launch.
It is a sharp contrast to Bungie's assembling some of the most famous industry voice actors
with a cast of marathon, I would say.
It is a rivalry, but a friendly one, at least among the developers themselves, fans, not
so much.
So this is why the other day when we were having this discussion, even though I like to mess
with you, ArcGrader boys, at the end of the day, ArcGrader's coming out was the best
thing that could have happened to Marathon.
It is because of that, that Marathon is what it is right now, and it is because
of these two games existing in this space that I believe as gamers, we are going to win.
We are going to see these two studios going head to head, you know, even though they're
they're being they're being chilled with each other, they're congratulating each other and
all that jazz, they're going to be going head to head competing for you, you and your
time and your money, which means they are going to be putting their best product forward.
That means we should be eating pretty good.
