Let's go. Bermuda.
First on our list and the first of four British territories is Bermuda,
which charity Oxfam has described as the world's worst tax haven.
By worst, they mean the tax haven that has allowed companies to save the most on their
taxes, which could equal the best when looked at from the point of view of the corporation,
but worst for the good of the world.
US companies reported $80 billion worth of profit in Bermuda in 2012, which is more
than their combined profits in China, Japan, Germany and France that year.
This is bad for other countries who may have benefited from the potential tax revenue on
those corporate profits if those companies were based there.
Remuda charges no corporate tax at all, and no income tax for individuals either.
Although it does charge a 6% payroll tax on salaries, which is payable by the employer.
But most companies based there are offshore subsidiaries anyway, and don't actually
employ that many people in the territory, so it wouldn't really be affected that
much anyway.
Next, we have the British Virgin Islands.
The British Virgin Islands is another British heritage that serves as a tax haven.
The territory levies no corporate tax on profit of companies that locate there.
There is also no capital gains tax.
But there is a payroll tax at 10 or 14% depending on the size of the company,
with 8% paid by the employee and the rest paid by the company they work for.
The British Virgin Islands allows companies to place themselves secretly with no public network if they own them.
the UK Parliament is at least pretending to prime-stop this practice. The Panama Papers
revealed an example of this secrecy in Ukrainian President Poroshenko, who had agreed to close
his company if elected. Ferdy simply moved it to the British Virgin Islands instead.
Duncan Haynes, director of policy at Transparency International, told Business Insider, the
secrecy offered by the British Virgin Islands allows corrupt individuals who steal public
funds to hide them around the world. More than half of the companies uncovered by the
Panama Papers leak were registered in the British Virgin Islands, or BVI. The authorities
in the British Virgin Islands rebut these comments very bluntly, simply saying, we
are not a tax haven. I guess we'll just believe in them.
Now we have come to the last British overseas territory that we are going to talk about,
and that is the Cayman Islands. The territory levies no income tax on individuals and
no corporate tax of any kind. Companies based there also do not need to file a tax return,
so basically they don't have to report how much they are making to anyone. The local government
makes its money on indirect taxes like import duty, which is between 22 and 25% and up
to 40% on cars, so everything you buy there is ridiculously expensive.
The Cayman Islands are the territory of choice for the world's hedge funds, and
the Cayman Islands Monarchs Area Authority estimates that three out of every four
of the world's hedge funds are located in the territory,
accounting for about $1.5 trillion worth of assets.
