Hello, I'm a streamer, and I'm also the founder and executive
director of Alvarez Sanctuary.

This is a wildlife sanctuary and conservation education
center.
In Austin, Texas, we rescue animals,
and then I bring streamers here, and I teach them
about those animals to help protect our planet.

and he's feeling really brave about it.
And I'm going to teach you about them,
and it's going to be a good time for all of you
to learn and have fun.

I would go with my mom most summers, and that was really my only interaction with animals
outside of like dogs and cats.

them. And then after we meet them inside, then we'll go outside and I'll give you a tour of the
whole sanctuary. Okay, sweet. I'm excited. Cool. If you guys want to sneak peek at what he's gonna
meet today, by the way, I was just telling him about this. Alvea Sanctuary has been live 24
seven since 2022. We have cameras in all of our animals enclosures. So this is not a
facility that the public can visit. But we do have live cams on all of our animals
enclosures so you can watch them all day long. And watching those live cameras is a
huge part of how we stay afloat here and keep doing the work that we're doing with
animal rescue and conservation education. You can watch those cameras make
out revenue on those cameras and that helps a ton. Sweet! Sweet. Yes. Okay.
Sorry. No, it's fine. I like it. Maybe I'll take it out. It's been my new stim for the
past week. Okay, so do you want to start, I mean do you want to talk about animals or
you want to start right now? Well first off I have a couple of questions. So what
even, like what is a sanctuary? Is it for like animals with like rough lives,
trauma? Yeah, so we rescue animals from all different circumstances. We've got
some permanently injured wildlife, so like they got hurt, they can't be released
back into the wild. We have some confiscated illegal pets, so like someone got an animal,
they can't have it, so they're confiscated, so they come here. We get some transfers from
it. So animals that need a home come here. And none of them are releasable. If they were,
we would release them back out into the wild. They're not. So they live here and help us
teach people about them.
Have you ever had somebody like pick up an animal from the sanctuary and they live with
them?
Like bring them in as a pet?
Yes.
So that's like, like with cats, a cat and dog sanctuary,
yes that would happen, like they would get adopted out.
But here these are wild animals.
So none of them are pets.

You said you've been streaming Alvias Sanctuary 24-7
for four years, right?
Yes.
When did you start the idea of doing this?
I found it in 2021.
2021.
So the origin story is I was a zookeeper in college
before I was a streamer.
I was also a falconer.
So you guys know when people put the glove on
and they fly the bird and the bird lands on the glove?
Yes.
Like that thing.
So I was doing that in college and I was a zookeeper.
And when I started streaming,
I started doing the falconry stuff
and the zoo keeping stuff on stream.
And then I could reach way more people,
way more places without having to bring the animals anywhere.
And I was like, wait, this is sick.
Because my zoo keeping job,
I was bringing animals to like,
birthday party, you ever remember birthday party
or something where they are wearing the khakis
and they have the big snake.
And they introduce you.
So I was doing that.
And then I started doing it virtually.
And I was like, wait, way more people,
the animals don't have to go anywhere.
This feels way better.
And then I found it alveas in 2021.
And it's really, it's really, it's really, it's good.
It's awesome.
And now, and now we're here.
And so we started rescuing animals
and doing the education programs with them here.

Do you have any crazy zookeeper slash
obvious sanctuary stories?
Like an animal breaking out of a cage, running rampant.
Yeah, we have not had that at alveas.
My first, like as an internet zoo,
I had some shit go down for sure.

it wasn't my facility, I was just an intern.

One of, this is an amphibian, this frog is an amphibian.
One of the marks of an amphibian is that they have semi-permeable skin.
So that means that they can soak things up through their skin.

They can do gas exchange for their skin.
One of the reasons they have this is because in the wild, Georgie will stay buried for
like 10 months out of the year, only come out in the rainy season.
So he needs to do gas exchange underground.
Awesome adaptation, not so good in today's day and age where there's pollutants in the
water and where there's shit on Jinxie's hands. I don't know what's on his hands.

So it's to protect Georgie from anything getting under his skin. You can put him on the table

African clawed frogs.

Because if the HCG hormone was in their urine, it would trigger the frog to lay eggs.
And that's how we knew if women were pregnant.

don't realize when they apply chemical pesticides is that they move up the food
chain and affect wildlife that we're not targeting necessarily because those
pesticides don't go away. So where you can try to use natural pesticide
alternative, same thing with rat poison. So if it's same like this same chart but
with a rat down there, if a rat eats rat poison then the snake eats the rat then
you get a rat with a bird and that right. So right okay cool great you did

but some people are really into snakes
and want them as pets.
And so there's an issue with the pet trade as well.
One of the reasons she's called the ball python
is if they get scared, they'll curl up into a ball,
which makes them very easy to poach.
So people will take them out of the wild
to sell them into the pet trade,
because people want them,
which is obviously not good
for those wild populations either.
Is that like illegal to sell snakes to people or no?
It's a complicated question, it depends where you are.
There is a ton of wild capture that happens
even in the US for the pet trade today.
Before Patschy, we had a ball python
that was a confiscation from LAX.
So somebody put like hundreds of baby ball pythons in bags,
stuffed them in PVC pipe,
and then shipped them through cargo into LAX.
Who would do that like Satan?
Poachers that are just trying to make money, you know,
cause there's money to be made there.
That snake did not survive,
but that happened in 2021, y'all.

So if you're getting pets, be aware of where your source of

individual is different too. So when we introduce animals for the first time, we have a whole

brought a collaborator in while he's on his own in here. Again, we're working as

need companions. Yeah. The way that we got Akila was somebody had him to breed
wolf dogs as pets. So this is a wolf dog. So it's not like a full-on wolf? Yeah. He's
hybrid between a gray wolf and domestic dog. Now Maya, this might be another dumb question,
but how does that even happen? A wolf and a dog mate? Yeah, also not a dumb question. So they'll
do artificial insemination, or they'll do some natural breeding. This is another thing where
people are like, it'd be so cool for my dog to be part wolf, but it doesn't really work like that.
You actually, you get an animal that can never be released into the wild because it's part domestic
dog, right? So they're not a wild wolf. And then the vast majority of the time they can never be
in people's homes either because it's part wolf. So they get in this weird limbo where the majority
of them end up being euthanized. Oh god. He's over there. So is it just like kind of like in
Akila's situation? It's like a psychotic reader who just... It was a dude. Yeah, just a dude that
that like wanted to breed them to make money.

Mia is a Congo African grey.
This is the largest species of parrot in Africa.

Yeah, she does have yellow eyes and she has a red tail too, which is kind of fun.
She can say lots of words, she can mimic lots of sounds, she does really good mechanical
noises like backup beepers.

So that's, sorry guys, that's Tico and Miley, those are the Macaws.
Macaws are incredibly loud.
They can scream at over 130 decibels, which is very loud.
Parrots, probably unsurprising to you guys.
A lot of people think that they want parrots as pets.
Then they don't realize how loud that inside of a room
is fucked, dude.
It hurts.
And then in addition to that, they can bite really hard.
They can be super destructive.
It's not something that you want in your house.

It's, they like, they choose things that they want to repeat,
and if they hear it often enough,
and if it's said often in an enthusiastic way,
they'll pick up on it.

These guys have really, really big beaks.
They can bite really hard, they can scream really loud,
and they don't make the best pets,
and a lot of people think that they want them as pets
and it doesn't work out.
There's also a lot of money to be made, unfortunately,
still in poaching them for the pet trade,
so the thing I was talking about, the snake.
Parrots, taxonomically, are the most common species
traded within the exotic wildlife trade.

are captured out of the wild a lot and sold into the pet trade.
Their beaks are like, oh, their beaks are like scaring me, they're sharp.
They're super sharp, yeah. Tico was dropped off in a box outside of a humane society.

is endangered species breeding programs.

We just expanded from 15 acres to 40 acres.
And we're going to start breeding endangered wolves here
at Albeas for reintroduction back into the wild.
So to add on to wild populations,
and we want to expand to do a bunch of endangered species
breeding programs and so we're currently we've been fundraising to start doing
that work that's huge for us here and for for that expansion as well like it's
it's real real deal conservation guys that's oh my god that's insane bro yeah
I'd like to know I'm just like even a part of some of it is cool because it
goes this is a good cause and like I said I think what you do here it's um it's
so special in the streaming community like it's I would never do anything like
this but I did it you know thank you so much of course yeah thank you see that is
