[00:00:00] you
[00:00:30] you
[00:01:00] you
[00:01:30] you
[00:02:00] you
[00:02:30] you
[00:03:00] Other well, how do I tell brother? I am on fucking I am on I'm on bro
[00:03:06] Look at what I got just sitting next to me right now, dude. Just look at this bro
[00:03:13] Brother what do they got me on dude? What what do they got me on bro? They got me on morphine
[00:03:25] oxycodone
[00:03:27] percocet
[00:03:29] Cyclo benza prime in Meloxicam. They got me on they got me on everything under the Sun chat
[00:03:37] They got me on everything bro
[00:03:40] Now I'm gonna be honest
[00:03:43] When I tell you guys
[00:03:46] First off first off
[00:03:51] Let me explain to y'all right now
[00:03:53] What has been going on? I'm gonna take these headphones off because I swear I'm hearing oceans and shit
[00:03:58] Let me explain to you guys. What has been going on with me the last two days since I got out of surgery, bro
[00:04:03] Can y'all hear me? It's audio good though. It's audio good everything good
[00:04:09] I'm not a tweaker. I'm not a tweaker, bro
[00:04:13] um, so
[00:04:16] Since I got out of since I got out of surgery. I literally came back here right away and
[00:04:22] And then um, I'm gonna be honest. I've been sitting in this bed. I have not moved
[00:04:30] since
[00:04:32] Yesterday, I think it's I think it was what whatever time I got back like one or two
[00:04:36] Maybe I have not moved out of this bed. I can't move
[00:04:40] My body cannot physically move like my leg my leg can't move
[00:04:46] I don't know how to explain it. You have to get up. No, no, no, I trust me. I talk to the doctor
[00:04:50] I'm I'm not doing anything wrong. So basically, what happened was because of
[00:04:58] because I had a double meniscus tear, he had to he had to do extra incisions and
[00:05:05] do a bunch of extra shit in my knee. So every time I try to move my leg, I it
[00:05:13] starts spazzing. I didn't even know what a muscle spasm was until today. So
[00:05:20] So every time I try to move my leg, I get like really bad cramps and my muscles start
[00:05:25] to spasm because they're going through trauma from the surgery.
[00:05:31] How do you go to the bathroom?
[00:05:32] Yeah, so I've been peeing in a bottle.
[00:05:36] Every time I've had to pee, I peed in a bottle and then Darla has to dump the bottle of
[00:05:42] pee out and then clean it and give it back to me for me to pee again.
[00:05:46] It's, I'm gonna be honest, it's literally, I feel like an animal, bro.
[00:05:50] I literally feel inhumane. It's disgusting. It's the most disgusting thing ever
[00:05:54] Actually the most disgusting thing ever peeing into a bottle literally makes me feel like a grown man child. I
[00:06:01] Don't have a diaper do you want who wants me to wear a diaper in case I have to shit
[00:06:04] You had the shit yeah, and I've just been holding it in I'm not to wearing a diaper
[00:06:09] I'm a grown man. I'm not putting a diaper on
[00:06:14] Drew wants me to put a diaper on but I'm not putting a diaper on
[00:06:16] Do you have to poop in a bottle too? I haven't had to poop yet. Thank God. Um, I haven't had to poop yet, but
[00:06:24] But yeah chat so so I don't know y'all know this but apparently when you get surgery
[00:06:29] They put on these things called nerve blockers when you do the surgery
[00:06:34] So that the nerve blockers so that you don't feel anything in your nerves
[00:06:39] Last night at 3 30 in the morning
[00:06:42] Brother I was sound asleep. I wake up out of my sleep. I thought I was getting stabbed
[00:06:49] I like I thought I was gonna stab in my knee and it's because the nerve blocker was only like for like 20 hours or some shit
[00:06:56] So my nerve blocker wore off in the middle. Oh
[00:07:03] This part so my nerve blocker wore off in the middle of the night and it hurts so bad
[00:07:09] Why are you guys saying you bro? Just I did not shit myself
[00:07:15] But yeah, basically all today I've just been in like
[00:07:19] In insane amount of pain like pain that I don't even know how to describe bro
[00:07:24] The pain has been so bad. It's been such bad pain
[00:07:29] And then the doctor called and he gave me morphine. So now in order to help the perks
[00:07:37] I'm taking morphine as well because apparently morphine like helps the perks take away the pain
[00:07:45] I'm not addicted. Yo, I'm not addicted to pain meds, bro
[00:07:51] But I will say this the perks every time I take a perk. I literally just doze off
[00:07:56] I don't know if that's normal, but I'll take I'll take a perk and then I'll close my eyes and I'll just like
[00:08:02] my body will feel warm and
[00:08:04] And I'll just doze off and I remember the first one I took I thought I was floating on a ravioli. I
[00:08:11] Don't know how I don't know how to explain it other than I was floating on a ravioli, bro
[00:08:15] That's literally all I know how to explain it as
[00:08:18] W itchy perk what is an itchy perk though?
[00:08:24] How come you always float in I don't know bro, I don't know I don't know I don't know
[00:08:29] But yeah, I'm live cuz I literally have nothing to do. I've been laying in bed all day in pain
[00:08:33] I just got these this morphine so it's oh I look you have to pee
[00:08:46] And my dead ass but I have to hide my screen and pee in a bottle real quick
[00:08:57] Can you give me the pee bottle
[00:09:03] I have to pee.
[00:09:10] Thank you, baby.
[00:09:15] Thank you.
[00:09:21] This is like, there's no one about to do this right now, bro.
[00:09:30] There's no way I'm gonna do this right now, bro
[00:09:33] Why you smelling it? No, it smells good. It smells like wait Darnell. What's what's flavor soap is that?
[00:09:40] Smells like cinnamon and I look you got to try to sit up a little bit here. Hold on
[00:09:45] Okay, chat this might hurt a lot. I'm gonna try to sit up so I can pee
[00:10:00] All right shit, I'm gonna hide the wait keep shut the door darla. I'm gonna hide the camera and pee real quick

[00:18:51] here and there but you know obviously true is not really true I mean you've been
[00:18:57] helpful but I'm not gonna have you like like clean my piss and like that's why I
[00:19:05] said you've been helpful but you haven't been like cleaning my piss like Darla
[00:19:08] Hey, Drew, the second monitor's not working.
[00:19:14] How much pain have you been in since the surgery?
[00:19:16] I don't know if anybody in the chat
[00:19:17] has had to go through the surgery that I went through ACL
[00:19:23] in both meniscus, but it's the worst pain I've ever felt in my life.
[00:19:28] Nothing has even come close, like, ever.
[00:19:33] It's really bad, like, it's like, really, really, it's terrible.
[00:19:37] It's like really bad

[00:20:08] Yeah, dude, I do look more fat, okay?
[00:20:11] Number one, I just got out of surgery, okay?
[00:20:14] Number two, I have been laying down for 30 hours straight,
[00:20:19] not able to move.
[00:20:21] Number four, I'm on five different meds
[00:20:24] and one of the meds makes you gain weight
[00:20:27] and I'm also laying down so my face is squished
[00:20:30] and whoever just told me to go to the gym,
[00:20:32] Like genuinely just die bro.
[00:20:35] Like whoever just thought it would be funny
[00:20:36] to tell me to go to the gym.
[00:20:41] I'll be honest, I think I'm gonna set up a little thing here.
[00:20:43] I'm gonna set up a little like, watch this chat,
[00:20:45] watch this tech.
[00:20:46] I'm gonna set up a little chat right here,
[00:20:47] little chat bubble.
[00:20:49] Pull this up, pull up chat.
[00:20:51] Hold on a minute, might be cooking up something here.
[00:20:54] Get a little reaction going, wait a minute.
[00:21:01] Hold on now.
[00:21:02] How do I how do I lock my chat here? How do I lock the chat?

[00:21:33] Wait Kai speed Minecraft marathon not gonna lie. I did see this already, but let's react to it
[00:21:51] Wait, it's really loud
[00:21:57] No, no, no, listen, uh, you're gonna take the warden and I'm gonna...
[00:22:21] What's the warning?
[00:22:33] Wait
[00:22:34] Yeah, how long does it actually take like realistically how long is it gonna take them to beat every boss like actually
[00:22:42] Am I tweaking or is this not gonna like is it not even possible?
[00:22:46] Over a month, surely they don't have to beat it all in the same run though, right?
[00:22:58] There's no way they have to beat it all in the same run.
[00:23:03] There's just no way they do.
[00:23:06] So you're telling me, guy and speed are going to beat the wither, beat the warden, beat
[00:23:13] the Elder Guardian and the Ender Dragon all on hardcore mode without dying.
[00:23:22] Okay, I mean, that's just not gonna happen.
[00:23:25] Like that's literally not gonna happen.
[00:23:27] It's easy.
[00:23:28] I've done it.
[00:23:29] No, you have not.
[00:23:30] You know, it's crazy.
[00:23:32] I think I said this on stream before, but Drew wanted me and Marlon to do this.
[00:23:36] Like six months ago, and I said no, because it would take too long.
[00:23:41] Brother, this shit.
[00:23:43] Like, I don't think it's possible.
[00:23:47] I genuinely don't think it's possible.
[00:23:49] It's easy if you're a gamer.
[00:23:50] Yeah, but nobody in this chat is a gamer.
[00:23:53] Like nobody in this chat is a gamer.
[00:24:01] I'm sending this to you.
[00:24:04] Ooh, okay.

[01:39:21] Like, I'm just really thinking about it.
[01:39:32] Not even a game.
[01:39:33] Is there anything I'm just actually good at?
[01:39:38] This guy's very obvious, isn't he?
[01:40:05] It's winnable!
[01:40:08] It's winnable!

[01:41:01] You don't even use your leg to play.
[01:41:03] You use your hands?
[01:41:05] Yo dude, how do I tell you that has nothing to do with it?
[01:41:09] If your leg is in this much pain,
[01:41:11] your brain can't think and function properly on other topics and shit.
[01:41:19] You guys do realize that, right?
[01:41:36] What is by ya?
[01:41:41] What is by ya?
[01:41:44] Wait chat when does football season start why is you know, I'm not gonna lie
[01:41:51] My dick was like really close to being out just now
[01:41:54] Oh, no, bro, no, those perks are kicking in.

[01:42:16] All right.
[01:42:17] Wait, when was the last time?
[01:42:18] I need to figure out.
[01:42:19] Okay.
[01:42:20] Last time I took perks was 730.
[01:42:23] So that means in 30 minutes, I could take another two.
[01:42:28] I could take another two perks in 30 minutes.
[01:42:37] Why are you so excited to take them?
[01:42:40] I don't know, maybe because it makes my pain go away.
[01:42:44] Every time a perk hits my system,
[01:42:49] I just feel the pain slowly fade away.
[01:42:52] Why am I so itchy everywhere?
[01:42:54] Oh my God, I might actually have some type of disease
[01:42:57] for like not showering and,
[01:43:00] guys I'm not gonna get addicted to perks.
[01:43:01] Okay, if you're gonna get addicted to perks,
[01:43:04] I feel like you know, right?
[01:43:14] Like, no, no, no, you know what I'm saying?
[01:43:16] Like, I feel like once you're taking perks,
[01:43:19] Like you can feel, you can feel,
[01:43:23] what's the word I'm trying to say?
[01:43:24] Once you're taking perks,
[01:43:27] like I'd be able to feel like, oh, this feels good.
[01:43:30] When I take the perks, I don't feel, it doesn't feel good.
[01:43:33] It just makes my pain and my knee go away.
[01:43:40] This is good reacts.
[01:43:42] So like you guys could send me like actual things to react to but instead you're just
[01:44:01] sending you how to end stream videos.
[01:44:18] You're already addicted dude I think I would know if I was addicted to a drug or not.
[01:44:23] I promise you guys don't like I'm not gonna get addicted to to a drug.
[01:44:28] I'm not going to be addicted, but I am super itchy for some reason.
[01:44:42] You don't deserve a break, you're overworking.
[01:44:48] W reactions.
[01:44:49] That's 4 million views? Absolute punishment of a refresh pool. This was genuinely such
[01:45:15] a hard watch. Try not to laugh, try to laugh. Yo, what the fuck? Is there anything to react
[01:45:34] to? Welcome to my 100th player fashion undercover in a Nikkei 30 fashion show, bro. Can y'all
[01:45:41] I'll send me an actual YouTube video.
[01:45:56] Click this.
[01:46:01] Bro, I want an actual YouTube video to react to.
[01:46:05] All right guys.
[01:46:06] Like what, stop sending me a 29-view year old,
[01:46:08] It's important that y'all actually got a list of stuff.
[01:46:27] Watch Fern.
[01:46:38] 44 minute video?
[01:46:46] I don't know if I got that in me.
[01:46:56] Why are so many messages getting deleted because these mods suck?
[01:47:16] React to this?
[01:47:17] What is this?
[01:47:18] I can't flash, got flames, they're not black, I ain't got no room, it's one time, got bad
[01:47:30] Twitter man, touch a romantic ad, Deep black and dead, don't look like a memory
[01:47:36] Go round, round, round, round, something to a break down
[01:47:40] Last but never know, you know you're hurting on the radio
[01:47:44] Don't try all these times you can go
[01:47:46] Watch me go go
[01:47:48] Okay
[01:47:50] You need this
[01:47:52] Hey this guy and I'm gonna show you
[01:47:54] Hey
[01:47:56] What are you doing?
[01:48:00] Did you get to beat Buffalo Logwings?
[01:48:02] What'd you get?
[01:48:04] Okay
[01:48:06] Oh, guys, can you guys be normal and actually send me stuff to watch?
[01:48:19] Why am I itching so much?
[01:48:22] Is it normal for oxycodone to make you itching?
[01:48:28] It's the first thing that comes up.
[01:48:30] Yes, oxycodone can make you itching.
[01:48:32] Itching is a very common side effect of opioid medications.
[01:48:35] This happens because the drug triggers nerve pathways in your body and can cause your cells
[01:48:40] to release histamine.
[01:48:43] Is that why I'm so itchy?
[01:49:00] I'm so itchy everywhere.
[01:49:12] You know what the most important part of any live stream is?
[01:49:15] The chat.
[01:49:17] Every night thousands of viewers pour into their favorite streamers chat.
[01:49:20] Chat!
[01:49:21] Together they decide what games get played, what videos get watched.
[01:49:24] Only streamer that cares. He's talking about me, right?
[01:49:26] And the streamers should keep them entertained and get paid.
[01:49:30] It sounds pretty easy, right?
[01:49:33] Just give the chat what it wants.
[01:49:35] The problem is, chat never wants just one thing.
[01:49:37] There's thousands of people all asking for something different, and no matter what you
[01:49:40] do, some of them have you.
[01:49:43] The biggest streamers learn to follow the majority and keep the party moving.
[01:49:46] Because stopping everything for one unhappy viewer is the part of the science.
[01:49:50] You don't need 10,000 people hanging over a single name in the chat.
[01:49:54] What happens?
[01:50:18] Wait. Judd. Is it normal to have this much chest hair? Should I shave my chest?
[01:50:24] It's normal.
[01:50:29] Wait, Darla, would you wax my chest hair?
[01:50:44] Chad, to be honest, is normal to have this much s there?
[01:50:53] It makes you manly?
[01:51:01] Chad, what's a good fern video to watch?
[01:51:13] Why is every chat getting timed out?
[01:51:25] Yeah, I don't know.
[01:51:26] So what's the one Frank Ocean song?
[01:51:51] It's a good fern video to watch.
[01:52:19] The Bank Heist Form.
[01:52:44] The truth about Ferd, the infiltration of the dark web.
[01:52:50] Why Africa hates McDonald's?
[01:53:07] The kids who hacked the CIA?
[01:53:11] I feel like it's gotta be something more relevant, no?
[01:53:14] The kid who hacked America?
[01:53:37] This is Kevin Mitnick, one of the world's most famous hackers.
[01:53:41] And one of the first.
[01:53:43] In many ways, his story shaped how we think of his kind.
[01:53:46] The media vilified him.
[01:53:47] The authorities hunted him,
[01:53:49] and they were all extremely scared of him.
[01:53:52] Mitt Mick's story is about the advent of modern IT,
[01:53:55] about a kid who always wanted to be a magician.
[01:53:58] Most of all, it's catch me if you can, but with computers.
[01:54:01] In the 1990s, I was the most wanted hacker in the world.
[01:54:05] You get that adrenaline rush
[01:54:07] from the accomplishment of breaking into the system
[01:54:10] or finding a security board.
[01:54:13] Move the chat to where?
[01:54:35] To where?
[01:54:36] This is the only way I can read chat.
[01:54:42] screen but that I can't even read you guys.
[01:54:55] This video is largely based on the book Ghost in the Wires by Kevin Mitnick.
[01:54:59] It tells the story from his point of view, meaning some details rely on his personal
[01:55:03] recollection and can't always be independently confirmed.
[01:55:11] Young Kevin Mitnick loves watching magic tricks, but audiences fascinate him.
[01:55:16] Magic is about control.
[01:55:18] Magicians pull your attention where they want it, make you see what they want you to see.
[01:55:22] They take advantage of what you assume is true.
[01:55:25] At a magic show, people enjoy being fooled.
[01:55:28] Not so much in the real world, but it's equally easy, perhaps even easier than performing
[01:55:32] a magic trick when the audience knows there's a literal ace up that sleeve.
[01:55:37] In everyday life, people tend to be helpful, trusting, they want to do the right thing.
[01:55:42] One can use that, manipulate them, control them, make them do things they shouldn't.
[01:55:47] Oh no, I'm sorry Chad, I cannot fix my shirt bro, I'm sorry bro, I'm off, I'm off
[01:55:52] Percocets and I'm itching all over my body, my whole body itches bro, every part of
[01:55:59] my body itches and I'm getting sweat, it's really hot.
[01:56:03] I'm sorry that I have to have my shirt up bro deal with it and look at my nipples
[01:56:11] Or spill secrets they should have kept to themselves
[01:56:14] This is called social engineering and soon young Kevin gets really really good at it
[01:56:21] You not only have to think about technology you have to think about the people that use the technology
[01:56:25] Because it's usually easier to hack a human than it is to have other what is this fucking guy know about hacking and technology, bro?
[01:56:33] You were born in 1964 before the apple blueberry was invented
[01:56:41] It's summer break in Los Angeles in 1975
[01:56:44] Kevin is 12 years old. He spends the whole day riding the bus
[01:56:48] Each ride is 25 cents plus another 10 cents to transfer. It adds up
[01:56:53] So Kevin comes up with a plan
[01:56:55] He notices drivers carrying booklets of blank tickets when they sell a ticket. They punch it with a special tool
[01:57:01] Kevin needs both so he sits near the driver and spends a story about a school
[01:57:06] project something about punching interesting shapes in the cardboard the
[01:57:10] driver ends up telling Kevin exactly where he bought the hole punch
[01:57:13] well that was the only I don't give a fuck about little Kevin bro I need a
[01:57:17] more interest I need a video it's gonna say I need a muggle I the only
[01:57:20] thing that this shit really interests me is about killers bro let me find
[01:57:24] videos about killers
[01:57:31] This one, the hunt for America's smartest killer.
[01:57:46] Watch the Zodiac killer one.
[01:57:51] I'm going to be honest, chat.
[01:58:01] shit genuinely like interest me this is the story of the infamous zodiac killer
[01:58:07] a mysterious serial murderer who made himself larger than life I like to go
[01:58:14] Oh, yeah.
[01:58:16] He was never caught.
[01:58:19] Deep.
[01:58:20] I don't see it like it's said.
[01:58:21] Make water.
[01:58:22] Ooh, little mozzarella sticks.
[01:58:23] Don't get the fucking sauce on the ground.
[01:58:55] Who just told me to put a little sauce on my nipples?
[01:59:14] Bro why does my body itch so much I'm not even kidding.
[01:59:16] Oh my god my body itches so much.
[01:59:19] David is getting ready to go out with his girlfriend, Betty Lou.
[01:59:26] It's a special occasion.
[01:59:28] The two teenagers met earlier this year.
[01:59:31] Since then, they've seen each other almost every day.
[01:59:34] But tonight is their first real date, and they want to make it special.
[01:59:40] David picks out a light blue shirt, a beige sport coat, and a brown corduroy pants.
[01:59:46] He has butterflies in his stomach.
[01:59:49] pockets some change, a white anchor chiff, and a bottle of breath mitts, just in case.
[01:59:55] He slips on his rough leather boots, grabs the keys to his mother's rambler station wagon,
[01:59:59] and is on his way.
[02:00:01] It's only a short drive to Betty Lou's house.
[02:00:04] David pulls up outside and pauses to take a breath.
[02:00:08] Tonight is supposed to be special.
[02:00:10] A night to remember for the rest of his life.
[02:00:12] And who knows?
[02:00:14] It'll even be the start of their life together
[02:00:23] When David sees Betty Lou the world stops for a moment he even forgets how nervous he is brother
[02:00:29] How does this have to do with a killer who the fuck is Betty Lou into the car and the pair drive off?
[02:00:35] Their parents think they're going to a Christmas concert, but they're actually headed somewhere else
[02:00:40] to a quiet turnout just off Lake Herman Road the spot is popular with young
[02:00:47] couples in the layout. Oh he better crack some shit!
[02:00:49] to enjoy some quality time away from their parents and siblings.
[02:00:52] Betty Lou leans against David's shoulder. Tonight belongs only to them.
[02:00:59] Both keep on coming, Ty.
[02:01:02] I'll steal them by fern.
[02:01:03] About an hour later a pair of bright headlights cut through the darkness.
[02:01:07] A second vehicle is slowly rolling toward them. It pulls up right next to the rambler
[02:01:13] Suddenly shots are fired straight into David's car
[02:01:17] In a panic the teenagers scramble out the passenger side door
[02:01:21] But David only makes it as far as the passenger seat
[02:01:24] Oh, they're attacker reaches to the open driver's side window aims at a spot behind David's left ear and pulls the trigger
[02:01:32] For why it's several meters away from the car. She's running hurried and desperate run Betty
[02:01:37] He's eating his shallow and frantic.
[02:01:39] The stranger is right behind her.
[02:01:41] There's no way she can escape him.
[02:01:43] She screams, piercing the quiet night air.
[02:01:46] Then, five shots ring out.
[02:01:50] They strike Betty Lou in the back,
[02:01:52] shattering the future she and David might have had.
[02:01:55] By now it's 11.14 p.m.
[02:01:58] Betty Lou should have returned home long ago.
[02:02:00] But neither her nor David ever will.
[02:02:03] This is the first time the Zodiac killer...
[02:02:05] It's a true story, right Chad? It's a true story?
[02:02:35] at online communities dead set on finding the Zodiac killer.
[02:02:39] Some will even think they haven't.
[02:02:41] The search for Zodiac still captivates people to this day,
[02:02:45] but it also shows that stories only get as big
[02:02:48] as we allow them to.
[02:02:56] This video is largely based on the book Zodiac
[02:02:58] by Robert Grace Smith.
[02:03:00] As always, you'll find the link
[02:03:01] and all our sources in the description.
[02:03:03] Wait, this video's gotta be good!
[02:03:33] to become part of a shocking story.
[02:03:35] That it will become an active player in a deadly game.
[02:03:40] This is the story of the Zodiac Killer
[02:03:42] and this is Mona, our producer.
[02:03:43] Oh, hi, Don.
[02:03:45] You might know this story from the David Fincher film.
[02:03:47] Mona, you've seen it, right?
[02:03:49] She's obsessed with film.
[02:03:50] I love watching movies, working with and on movies
[02:03:52] and actually, gonna bring you them home with me.
[02:03:55] She even has a poster of our award-winning documentary,
[02:03:57] which she produced.
[02:03:59] Nice work, Mona.
[02:03:59] Thanks, Don.
[02:04:00] Do you actually know about today's sponsor already?
[02:04:02] No, but I'm...
[02:04:03] Okay
[02:04:06] And the Chronicles publisher
[02:04:09] Cartoonist Robert Grace Smith two of his colleagues and the Chronicles Chad
[02:04:12] Who is the worst serial killer in history do you guys think like in your guys opinion?
[02:04:16] Who would you say is the worst like the worst serial killer in history?
[02:04:20] You mean me
[02:04:23] Which had you guys hear that
[02:04:25] Listen
[02:04:33] I'm sure I've gathered for you, not really hungry though, I'm really itchy everywhere.
[02:04:49] Jeffrey Dahmer, oh my gosh, I'm so itchy.
[02:05:00] Take a perk.
[02:05:02] Last time I took, it was 7.30, right?
[02:05:05] Last time I took them?
[02:05:08] Cause it was 2.30, then I waited four hours,
[02:05:12] five hours, took one 7.30,
[02:05:14] so the next time I can take one is.
[02:05:17] Their daily editorial conference.
[02:05:19] Every morning they come together
[02:05:20] to plan the next day's edition.
[02:05:22] They discuss what's happening in San Francisco
[02:05:24] and the rest of the world,
[02:05:25] and they decide which topics their columnist Tempanal
[02:05:27] should cover in their editorials.
[02:05:30] Meanwhile, Robert is drawing.
[02:05:32] He'll do six sketches now.
[02:05:34] Later on, he'll ink one of them
[02:05:35] and that will be tomorrow's editorial cartoon.
[02:05:38] Suddenly, their routine is interrupted
[02:05:39] by another employee who delivers a message.
[02:05:42] I'm not that hairy, bro.
[02:05:44] This is not that much hair.
[02:05:46] It's a little bit of chest hair.
[02:05:48] I'm a 23-year-old grown man.
[02:05:50] I'm gonna have a little chest hair on my chest, bro.
[02:05:52] It's not weird to have a little hair on your chest.
[02:05:54] It makes me more of a man.
[02:05:56] And Darla likes to twist them.
[02:05:58] The front reads, please rush to editor.
[02:06:03] Inside is a letter and a sheet of paper filled with cryptic symbols.
[02:06:07] The letter begins with the words, Dear editor, this is the murderer of the two teenagers
[02:06:13] last Christmas at Lake Harmon.
[02:06:15] Wait, what?
[02:06:16] And the girl on the 4th of July near the golf course in Vallejo.
[02:06:20] The message contains detailed information about the murders committed in the Bay Area
[02:06:24] in the previous months.
[02:06:26] Things only the killer could know.
[02:06:28] there's a threat. If you do not print this cipher by afternoon of Friday the
[02:06:34] 1st of August I will go on a kill ram page Friday night. The four men don't wait so
[02:06:41] he killed people and then wrote in to like and like and like confessed to the
[02:06:47] killers. What? No what to do. Publishing the cipher in the letter might produce
[02:06:53] more than just a front page headline. It could send the city into a panic
[02:06:57] Maybe even the entire region
[02:07:00] The murders mentioned in the mysterious letter have already put the bay area on edge for months
[02:07:05] First David and Betty Lou were murdered. That's peace just a few weeks ago. There was another attack
[02:07:15] Darlene Farron as a waitress at Terry's restaurant my mom's name. It's a classic diner serving waffles fried chicken and pie
[02:07:23] Saturday and Sunday I can open some waffles three in the morning
[02:07:26] She's friendly, talkative, and extremely popular with customers.
[02:07:31] People even line up to have her wait on them.
[02:07:33] Garleen just gave birth to her daughter, Dina, and she and her husband purchased a small house
[02:07:37] in Virginia Street.
[02:07:39] She doesn't seem entirely happy.
[02:07:41] It's an open secret that she sees other men.
[02:07:43] While she's out, her husband or a babysitter stays home with Dina.
[02:07:47] Friends will later recall that she seems exhausted, nervous, and scared.
[02:07:51] She thinks she's being watched.
[02:07:52] In her own home just steps away from the sheriff's office and here at the diner
[02:07:58] She says she's seen a white car with old California plates outside the restaurant in recent weeks
[02:08:03] Her sister and her friends have noticed a similar car
[02:08:06] Darlene thinks she knows who it belongs to wait is it a Zodiac this stocky well-dressed man
[02:08:11] He wears horn-rimmed glasses and smells of leather
[02:08:14] Darlene says she knows him but no one will ever find out from where
[02:08:18] The man sits at the counter, eating strawberry shortcake and pretending to read a newspaper.
[02:08:23] But he never really lets Darlene out of his sight.
[02:08:36] It's the 4th of July. America is celebrating almost 200 years of independence.
[02:08:40] Darlene picks up her friend Mike Mijoux and confidently steers her 63-core of air through the festive town,
[02:08:46] Despite not having a driver's license
[02:08:48] She met Mike and his twin brother at Terry's diner
[02:08:51] Over time the three became friends and the twins became rivals for Darlene's affection
[02:08:56] They would fight over driving her to work or doing her washing so she
[02:09:00] At some point she might notice the Darlene was a little whore. She's a whore, bro
[02:09:04] She was literally just going home with different guys every night. She's a prostitute and closely followed
[02:09:09] The other car looks like it could be a Ford Falcon
[02:09:12] Darlene keeps trying to shake it, but she can't
[02:09:15] The car gets closer and closer.
[02:09:18] Finally, it forces Darlene's car into a parking lot near a golf course in the outskirts of town.
[02:09:23] Then it speeds off.
[02:09:25] For a brief moment, Darlene and Mike think they're safe.
[02:09:28] But just minutes later, the Falcon returns.
[02:09:31] The driver seems to have changed his mind.
[02:09:33] Mike and Darlene are hit by a blinding light.
[02:09:36] A man gets out of the car and walks toward them.
[02:09:39] He's holding a large flashlight in his hands.
[02:09:42] Mike thinks the man is police.
[02:09:44] Maybe Darlene knows him. After all, she's been seeing men who work at the sheriff's office, but before we can even pull out his ID
[02:09:52] The roar of a gunshot fills his ears. He feels blood running down his face
[02:09:57] Darlene collapses under the steering wheel two bullets hit our right arm two more hit her left and
[02:10:03] Five more hit her in the back piercing her lung in the left ventricle of her heart
[02:10:08] What?
[02:10:18] Oh my god
[02:10:26] Did he survive?
[02:10:38] is a mistake. If they had, the shooter probably would have driven right by them. Shortly after,
[02:10:44] a man places a call to the Vallejo Police Department. His voice is even in-
[02:10:49] Don't tell me he killed people and then called the police department to re- yo, I'm not gonna
[02:10:55] lie. Hot take, Zodiac's got aura.
[02:10:58] Consistent. His words sound rehearsed.
[02:11:01] I want to report a double murder. If you go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to
[02:11:06] to the public park, you'll find kids in a ground car.
[02:11:10] What?
[02:11:10] They were shot with a 9-millimeter luger.
[02:11:14] I also killed those kids last year.
[02:11:17] Goodbye.
[02:11:18] Oh, hell no.
[02:11:18] Then the man hangs up.
[02:11:20] Pacific Telephone will later trace the call
[02:11:22] to a public pay phone.
[02:11:23] The booth is located right in front of the Vallejo Sheriff's
[02:11:26] office.
[02:11:28] It's also within sight of Darlene's little greenhouse.
[02:11:31] Darlene's friends and family also report
[02:11:33] having received strange calls that night.
[02:11:36] All they could hear was deep, heavy breathing.
[02:11:39] At the hospital, Darlene is declared dead on arrival.
[02:11:43] Mike pulls through, and it won't-
[02:11:45] He survived?
[02:11:46] Say, oh, God, he survived!
[02:11:48] He'll be long until the killer strikes again.
[02:11:55] Wait, if he survives,
[02:11:57] he should be able to identify him, no?
[02:12:00] He uses a blue felt-tip pen
[02:12:01] compose three nearly identical texts. One of them reads first girl was wearing pattern
[02:12:09] slacks to the boy was also shot in the knee. Three grand name of ammo was Western to prove
[02:12:18] I check if he was shot in the knee. Do you guys think my knee hurts worse or his three
[02:12:25] The brand name of Ammo was Western.
[02:12:28] To prove I killed them, I shall state some facts only I in the police snow.
[02:12:34] The paper measures 18 by 25 centimeters or 7 by 10 inches.
[02:12:39] It's a unique format the man will return to again and again.
[02:12:42] It'll become unmistakably associated with his letters.
[02:12:46] Christmas.
[02:12:47] First, brand name of Ammo, Super X.
[02:12:51] Two, ten, shots were fired.
[02:12:53] The boy was on his back with his feet to the car.
[02:12:57] I don't get it.
[02:12:58] The girl was on her right side, feet to the west.
[02:13:02] The handwriting drifts downward as it crosses the page.
[02:13:05] And it's quite distinct.
[02:13:06] The letter N is small and edgy.
[02:13:09] The R resembles a check mark.
[02:13:11] He ends his letters with a symbol resembling
[02:13:13] the crosshairs of a gun.
[02:13:15] In the years to come, it'll become his signature.
[02:13:17] Oh, the aura.
[02:13:18] He's given some thought to making his message
[02:13:19] even more impactful.
[02:13:21] And he's decided to pair each letter
[02:13:23] with a separate message a cipher now we just need to find an encryption method
[02:13:28] he could simply shift the letters turn the a's and the c's and the d's and f's
[02:13:32] that system would be basic and easy to use but he needs something more
[02:13:37] sophisticated he decides to replace the letters with a range of different
[02:13:41] symbols Greek characters Morse code and weather symbols letters from the
[02:13:45] Latin alphabet naval symbols and astrological signs then he adds
[02:13:50] another layer of complexity.
[02:13:51] Yo, he's a tryhard!
[02:13:53] Each letter can be represented by multiple symbols.
[02:13:56] That makes it essentially impossible to decode the text
[02:13:59] through frequency analysis.
[02:14:00] You can't just count how often certain symbols appear
[02:14:02] and match that to certain levels.
[02:14:03] How long ago did this story take place?
[02:14:05] Like, when did this happen?
[02:14:06] A cyclical linguistics expert will later
[02:14:07] claim that whoever composed the cipher must have at least
[02:14:09] been trained in elementary cryptography.
[02:14:12] But today, we know this first cipher wasn't actually
[02:14:14] that sophisticated.
[02:14:16] The Code Breakers by David Kahn and Codes in Ciphers
[02:14:18] by John Laffin described similar encryption methods.
[02:14:21] It's very likely the author of these letters
[02:14:23] simply used these two books as guides.
[02:14:25] While he would have had to track them down,
[02:14:27] neither was that hard to come by.
[02:14:29] The Phantom writer carefully arranges symbol after symbol.
[02:14:32] Finally, each of his three ciphers
[02:14:34] consists of eight rows with 17 symbols each.
[02:14:37] He pairs each one with the normal letter.
[02:14:40] Then he mails them to-
[02:14:41] All right, this might be a hot take.
[02:14:43] On my soul, if TikTok and Twitter existed 60 years ago,
[02:14:50] they would have caught the Zodiac killer way sooner.
[02:14:53] Facts are no.
[02:14:54] On my soul, little detectives on TikTok
[02:14:56] and in Twitter communities would have had this do pot
[02:14:59] within the first letter.
[02:15:00] Oh God.
[02:15:01] Three newspapers in the Bay Area.
[02:15:03] The San Francisco Chronicle,
[02:15:05] the San Francisco Examiner,
[02:15:07] and the Vallejo Times Herald.
[02:15:09] Like Jack the Ripper before him,
[02:15:11] this man will use the media to taunt the police
[02:15:13] with cryptic clues to his identity.
[02:15:16] The editorial team at the Chronicle
[02:15:18] eventually decides to put their cipher.
[02:15:20] Their colleagues at the Vallejo Times Herald
[02:15:22] follow their lead.
[02:15:24] The examiner waits until Sunday
[02:15:25] publishing its cipher two days later.
[02:15:28] The killing spree threatened in the letter doesn't happen.
[02:15:31] But publishing it has another effect.
[02:15:34] Now the public knows about the mysterious killer.
[02:15:37] The entire Bay Area grows increasingly frightened.
[02:15:40] Before long, parents are telling their children
[02:15:42] not to leave the house.
[02:15:43] And why is little Timmy going to school on a bus?
[02:15:46] And you're watching him leave.
[02:15:48] Fucking L parents.
[02:15:50] Before long, parents are telling their children
[02:15:52] not to leave the house.
[02:15:54] Jack Eastilts has been running the Vallejo Police
[02:15:57] Department for 21 years.
[02:15:58] When he took over as chief back in 1948,
[02:16:01] the city was struggling with gambling,
[02:16:02] drugs and prostitution.
[02:16:04] His reforms and cleanup efforts
[02:16:05] have produced some good results.
[02:16:07] But now his town of all places
[02:16:09] is haunted by a ruthless serial killer.
[02:16:11] The man who Stiltz thinks is killing just for the thrill of it.
[02:16:14] Who he describes as the most dangerous individual he's ever encountered in his 30 years in law enforcement.
[02:16:19] A few days ago, Stiltz publicly called on David, Betty, Lou and Darlene's killer to send another letter.
[02:16:25] Not addicted to gambling and drugs.
[02:16:27] One of more details, proving it was really him who did it.
[02:16:29] The response comes quickly in the form of a three-page letter.
[02:16:32] Dear editor, this is the Zodiac speaking.
[02:16:35] Oh, shit.
[02:16:36] In answer to your asking for more details about the good times I have had up a little.
[02:16:41] I shall be very happy to supply even more material
[02:16:46] By the way, are the police having a good time with the code?
[02:16:49] If not, tell them to cheer up. When they do crack it, they will have me.
[02:16:56] What?!
[02:16:57] This is the letter where the killer names himself Zodiac.
[02:16:59] Y'all I'm not gonna lie, he gave himself a nickname?
[02:17:03] He's playing in their faces, bro!
[02:17:06] Like how did the cops- how they not caught his ass yet?
[02:17:09] The word refers to the Zodiac Circle of Astrological Signs.
[02:17:39] Yeah.
[02:17:55] Oh, he's self-reporting!
[02:18:09] Brian Hartnell and Cecilia Shepard have been close friends since college.
[02:18:14] Today they're driving up to Laker...
[02:18:15] So I'm noticing a pattern with the Zodiac.
[02:18:17] Why does he kill couples almost?
[02:18:23] He kills people when they're together.
[02:18:25] Brie Ressa, it's a beautiful spot surrounded by rolling hills.
[02:18:29] On a small peninsula, they lay down a picnic blanket and revel in the stillness.
[02:18:34] Here the water, the land, drops off abruptly, hiding the shoreline.
[02:18:39] From Ryan and Cecilia's perspective, it's impossible to see anyone approaching from that
[02:18:42] direction.
[02:18:43] You guys actually think he gets no pussy, so he just kills couples.
[02:18:46] Someone is.
[02:18:47] A tall, powerfully built man emerges.
[02:18:50] He's wearing a black executioner's hood that looks almost medieval.
[02:18:54] On his tunic, a white cross cuts across a circle.
[02:18:58] It's the symbol the Zodiac killer uses to sign his letters.
[02:19:01] There's no way he starts wearing a costume killer, people.
[02:19:04] There's just no way.
[02:19:05] The man is carrying a knife with a 30 centimeter blade.
[02:19:08] With it he stabs Brian and then Cecilia again and again.
[02:19:12] That's not him.
[02:19:15] That's not him.
[02:19:18] Why would he change his MO?
[02:19:22] He's always killed people with a gun.
[02:19:25] All of a sudden he switches and starts using a knife?
[02:19:30] of 24 times. About an hour later, the phone rings at Napa Police Department. A calm and
[02:19:38] controlled voice says, I want to report a murder. You know, I don't know him. I just
[02:19:43] know a lot. Yeah, you ought to understand. I went to, I did criminal justice in school,
[02:19:48] bro. Usually a serial killer kills the way they kill because they get a high almost
[02:19:54] like they get a rise off of the way they're killing. So they have a certain ammo that
[02:19:58] they like to do. Some serial killers might stab, some serial killers might use a gun,
[02:20:04] some serial killers might, you know, there's serial killers out there who have done sexual
[02:20:07] things, do it for sexual reasons. But most serial killers, they start low and they realize,
[02:20:12] oh shit, I like this, I like the way it feels. Then they start killing more and
[02:20:16] more and more. There's no way that he would just randomly change his M.O. and go from
[02:20:21] a gun to a knife. There's no way.
[02:20:24] No, a double murder.
[02:20:27] The caller doesn't seem to know that Brian, though severely injured, survived the assault.
[02:20:31] The police believe the attacker must have left the scene right away,
[02:20:34] but not before leaving the message on the door of Brian's car.
[02:20:37] The dates Betty Lou, David and Darlene were murdered.
[02:20:40] And today's date.
[02:20:42] Crime lab technicians will later discover some less obvious clues.
[02:20:45] Tracks suggesting the attacker's vehicle has heavily worn tires and very deep footprints.
[02:20:51] The suspect must weigh at least 95 kilos, or 200 pounds.
[02:20:54] A police officer with that exact weight walking alongside the tracks
[02:20:58] and business out as deeply as the unknown individual.
[02:21:01] The footprints reveal another lead, too.
[02:21:04] You're most likely from a Chukka-type boot called the Wing Walker.
[02:21:07] As part of a government contract, over a million pairs of this model were produced.
[02:21:11] The investigators will never be able to trace them all.
[02:21:14] In most murder cases, you'll find a motive.
[02:21:17] But of course, this guy is just a killer, a mad killer,
[02:21:20] And you have no motive.
[02:21:21] This is Captain Don Towne.
[02:21:22] No, I don't know enough about this case.
[02:21:25] But has there been any?
[02:21:27] Have they looked to see like, OK, here's
[02:21:29] what I think could have happened, right?
[02:21:31] And this could just be me completely bullshitting.
[02:21:33] But if this Zodiac killer has killed all these people,
[02:21:37] it's not far fetched for there to be a fan of him who's
[02:21:41] just going around wearing his merch, stabbing people now.
[02:21:45] I don't think this was the actual Zodiac killer
[02:21:47] that stabbed them.
[02:21:48] of the Napa County Sheriff's Office.
[02:21:50] He'll speak to the press again later
[02:21:51] to announce what he believes is a possible motive.
[02:21:54] He thinks the murderer can't be anyone
[02:21:56] but a mentally ill person who derives sexual gratification
[02:21:58] from the act of killing.
[02:22:00] This guy is a pathological, uh, psycho, uh, killer.
[02:22:04] There's no doubt about it.
[02:22:06] The psychology professor supports that assessment.
[02:22:08] The Zodiac killer probably experiences sexual satisfaction
[02:22:11] through the deliberate mutilation of certain body parts.
[02:22:14] Captain Townsend is convinced that Zodiac hates women.
[02:22:17] So he gets hard and horny from killing people?
[02:22:47] kill for the sheer sake of killing you can use a high-powered rifle and kill it
[02:22:51] 200 300 yards but by plunging a knife into someone it's the most intimate
[02:22:56] contact you can have with a victim. Jesus Christ. An interesting that experts think
[02:22:59] people like the Zodiac killer are incapable of forming in their normal
[02:23:02] lives. His propensity to violence and misogyny are all over his ciphers too.
[02:23:06] You know what probably happens yeah you know this is like and this is like some
[02:23:09] real shit this is gonna sound crazy but he probably killed people with a gun
[02:23:13] And then he was getting like he was getting off by it like getting his sexual satisfaction
[02:23:19] And then and then he didn't get as much
[02:23:24] Satisfaction, so he started using a knife so it was more like
[02:23:27] Like oh, bro. This guy's sick just weeks ago. The first one was cracked and not by a specialist
[02:23:37] Donald and Betty Harden are both school teachers on any other weekend they'd be unwinding and taking it easy
[02:23:43] But this Sunday, there's something they can't let go of.
[02:23:46] The cipher published in the examiner two days earlier.
[02:23:50] They clear the dining room table and gather some sharp pencils,
[02:23:53] a ruler, and an eraser.
[02:23:55] Then they're back at it.
[02:23:56] Betty has a theory.
[02:23:58] The killer is such an egomaniac that he probably
[02:23:59] So I'm not the zodiac killer.
[02:24:02] You guys sound so dumb, bro.
[02:24:03] He begins his messages with I.
[02:24:06] The hardens also suspect he'll use the word kill
[02:24:08] repeatedly.
[02:24:09] So they look for recurrent four symbol patterns that
[02:24:11] could represent it.
[02:24:13] Their theory holds up.
[02:24:14] I like killing people because it's so much fun.
[02:24:18] It is more fun than killing wild game in the forest,
[02:24:21] because man is the most dangerous animal of all.
[02:24:25] Betty and Donald also spot the traps Zodiac built into the cipher.
[02:24:29] Fifteen times he uses a backwards cue.
[02:24:32] This is probably meant to trick readers into thinking it represents the most commonly used letter in English,
[02:24:37] E.
[02:24:38] But seven different signs are used to encode that letter.
[02:24:41] At the same time, Zodiac appears to have made multiple mistakes.
[02:24:44] The application of his own code is sloppy and several words are misspelled.
[02:24:48] At this point, neither of America's most renowned investigative institutions, the FBI and the CIA, have managed to solve the cipher.
[02:24:56] As they decode the final piece, the hardens are the first.
[02:24:59] How many people in the field?
[02:25:02] It's the most thrilling experience.
[02:25:04] It is even better than getting your rocks off with a girl.
[02:25:07] Oh hell no.
[02:25:08] Part of it is when I die, I will be reborn in paradise,
[02:25:12] and all the lone or stray people I've killed
[02:25:15] will become my slaves.
[02:25:17] I will not give you my name because you'll try to slow down
[02:25:20] or stop my collecting of slaves for my afterlife.
[02:25:24] Oh, this guy's psycho.
[02:25:26] Oh, this guy's psycho.
[02:25:27] He's a psycho, man.
[02:25:28] After Cecilia's murder, Captain Townsend explicitly
[02:25:30] warns Napa County residents to avoid isolated areas
[02:25:33] and not go out alone after dark.
[02:25:35] People get the message.
[02:25:37] local restaurants and drive-ins that are usually packed until late at night are
[02:25:40] now deserted. How can they not find him?
[02:25:43] The authorities run full alert. Since the murders occurred in three different
[02:25:46] jurisdictions, three separate police departments were working on the case.
[02:25:49] Based on witness descriptions, all of them are searching for the same
[02:25:53] suspect. A stocky man mid-20s to mid-30s with glasses and dark wavy hair.
[02:26:07] What do you want to see?
[02:26:11] From the very beginning, mid-20s to mid-30s, with glasses and dark wavy hair.
[02:26:17] It does not look like me.
[02:26:18] But from the very beginning, the investigation of SLODA...
[02:26:21] That does not look like me yet.
[02:26:23] ...works its full needs, often without knowing what the others are doing.
[02:26:26] Decoding the letters frequently requires coordinating with experts from other cities.
[02:26:30] That process is often complicated and time-consuming, slowing down the investigation.
[02:26:35] One officer admits to the press-
[02:26:36] STAY SHOCKED!
[02:26:37] Our knowledge of each other's crimes was not as sharp as it might be.
[02:26:41] To make things worse, the police make a grave mistake,
[02:26:45] one with serious consequences.
[02:26:46] No, what they do?
[02:26:51] Paul Stein's taxi is stuck in late night San Francisco traffic.
[02:26:55] As he inches forward, Paul curses.
[02:26:57] The traffic is frustrating,
[02:26:59] but he's just months away from a PhD in English and the taxi pays his tuition.
[02:27:02] On the sidewalk, a stocky man steps off him under an awning and waves him down.
[02:27:07] Stocky means fat, right?
[02:27:09] Paul picks him up.
[02:27:10] About 15 minutes later, they reach the man's destination, an upscale neighborhood in northern San Francisco.
[02:27:15] But the passenger asks Paul to go one block further.
[02:27:18] At the next intersection, the cab pulls over.
[02:27:21] A party's going on across the street.
[02:27:23] At the second-story window, teenagers look out over the wet pavement below.
[02:27:27] Normally, Paul would stop the meter and ask for the fare.
[02:27:31] But suddenly, the passengers left arm is clenched tightly around Paul's neck.
[02:27:35] What?
[02:27:36] The gun presses up against his right cheek.
[02:27:38] Then the man pulls the trigger.
[02:27:43] At exactly 9.58 p.m., a police officer logs a call.
[02:27:46] He killed without there being a girl there?
[02:27:52] Paul.
[02:27:52] The teenagers across the street couldn't see exactly what was going on inside the cab.
[02:27:56] But they know they witnessed something terrible.
[02:27:59] They say the suspect is a man wearing dark clothing
[02:28:02] But when the APB goes out patrol units are told to look for a black man
[02:28:07] On their way to the scene the officers see a stocky man lumbering along in the fog
[02:28:11] No, he seems to match the description perfectly, but he isn't black
[02:28:16] The officers shout to him asking if he's seen another man
[02:28:19] The man points them in a direction and the patrol car drives off
[02:28:22] The two policemen don't realize they probably just spoke to the killer. Oh my god
[02:28:27] They publicly admit to the mistake back at the crime scene detectives assume a robbery has gone terribly wrong
[02:28:35] San Francisco has recently seen a series of attacks on taxi drivers
[02:28:38] This one must have been the work of an amateur
[02:28:40] Paul's wallet is good. Wow, bro. So just
[02:28:44] Classic casual cop racism led to them not finding the zodiac a nice bro started his shift
[02:28:49] So there probably wasn't much cash in it. He's still wearing his expensive watch and the killer left the scene dripping in blood
[02:28:55] Well, they not have seen the blood?
[02:28:59] Oh, fuck, now don't-
[02:29:02] Oh, fuck, now don't-
[02:29:06] Oh, fuck, now don't-
[02:29:17] Oh, fuck, now don't-
[02:29:21] Oh, fuck, it held up.
[02:29:23] Now they just have to compare these prints against those of the day's passengers and against police records.
[02:29:26] But the process is painstakingly slow.
[02:29:29] How?
[02:29:30] This is the 1960s, so there are no digital databases.
[02:29:33] Fingerprints are stored on paper cards.
[02:29:36] Every comparison requires hours of concentrated manual labor.
[02:29:39] Specialists known as dactyloscopists first look at general patterns like arches, loops.
[02:29:44] Yo, they had no te- yo, I'm not gonna lie, this might be a really crazy thing to say.
[02:29:49] On my soul it would have been so easy to be a serial killer back in the day
[02:29:54] Like that shit would have been so easy to be a killer and worlds
[02:29:59] But what really matters are the tiny details that make every print unique
[02:30:03] Regendings bifurcations. No cameras and spurs barely any social media. No databases
[02:30:10] Brothers are baffled. They are now five victims and still no trace of the killer
[02:30:14] The Chronicle receives another letter.
[02:30:19] This is Zodiac speaking.
[02:30:21] I am the murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington Street and Maple Street.
[02:30:27] To prove this, here is a bloodstained piece of his shirt.
[02:30:31] Before this, investigators hadn't considered the Zodiac killer a suspect in Paul Stein's murder.
[02:30:36] The crime just didn't fit his known pattern.
[02:30:38] Paul was alone.
[02:30:40] The attack happened in the middle of a residential area, not a remote lover's lane on the outskirts
[02:30:45] of town.
[02:30:46] And the killer only fired a single shot.
[02:30:48] But the bloody piece of Paul's shirt seems to prove it.
[02:30:51] In case the Chronicle considers not printing it in its entirety, the letter also contains
[02:30:55] a terrible threat.
[02:30:57] School children make a nice target.
[02:30:59] I think I show why not a school...
[02:31:01] Oh hell no bro!
[02:31:03] ...should put a tire and then pick up the kiddies as they come bouncing out.
[02:31:09] When the paper publishes the letter, the bay area is hit by another wave of panic.
[02:31:13] The biggest one yet.
[02:31:14] Oh, this guy's crazy, bro.
[02:31:15] People were already living in fearful, uncertain times.
[02:31:18] They've got to find him.
[02:31:19] The 1960s are tumultuous, marked by political assassinations, the Manson murders, and the
[02:31:23] Vietnam War.
[02:31:24] And for the first time, the public can watch most of it unfold on Color TV.
[02:31:28] Who raided Jack?
[02:31:29] The thousands frequently take to the streets in the bay.
[02:31:31] Tatum raid, tatum, thank you for the raid.
[02:31:34] Tatum, thank you so much for the raid.
[02:31:37] That's right.
[02:31:38] Weird time for Tatum viewers to join the stream.
[02:31:42] You're probably wondering, oh, why are his nipples out?
[02:31:45] So basically, I'm on perks and my body's very itchy.
[02:31:51] Area's major cities.
[02:31:53] There are anti-war demonstrations,
[02:31:54] sit-ins and protest marches.
[02:31:56] Many wear the now famous peace sign buttons.
[02:31:59] In one of his later letters,
[02:32:00] the Zodiac killer will sarcastically demand
[02:32:02] protesters start wearing his symbol instead.
[02:32:05] Oh, hell no.
[02:32:05] The moment when many people desperately hope for peace.
[02:32:08] This guy's obsessed.
[02:32:09] No, there's no way this guy didn't make a single mistake throughout all these kills.
[02:32:13] There's no way.
[02:32:14] Society from within by threatening the most vulnerable target of all.
[02:32:18] Children.
[02:32:19] In Napa County alone, 65 school buses take thousands of children to school every day.
[02:32:26] The vehicles cover a daily total of 7,000 kilometers.
[02:32:29] Some stretches of road are quite dangerous, with isolated sections, sharp turns, and
[02:32:33] blind intersections.
[02:32:34] The bus drivers are instructed on handling potentially violent attacks keep driving the
[02:32:41] bus even on a flat tire tell the children to lie on the floor don't stop until you've
[02:32:46] reached a well populated area protection is ramped up to 70 units of heavily armed policemen
[02:32:52] guard the Napa County buses Rangers and pickup trucks escort them while air patrol
[02:32:56] planes fly overhead police protection is increased in almost a year this dude can send a letter
[02:33:02] in the mail and instantly has cops following school buses to school. I mean, bro.
[02:33:07] Every community in Northern California, plain clothes offices are deployed.
[02:33:11] Every threat, no matter how small, is taken seriously.
[02:33:15] A few days later, a man calls the Oakland Police Department. He claims to be the Zodiac Killer
[02:33:20] and he demands to speak with one of the two most famous defense attorneys in the
[02:33:23] country. See, bro, like this is what I'm talking about. Any like fake person can
[02:33:27] can now just call it as a zodiac killer, bro.
[02:33:30] This is probably what made it so hard to find him.
[02:33:33] Country.
[02:33:34] This is the zodiac speaking.
[02:33:36] I want you to get in touch with F. Lee Bailey.
[02:33:39] If you can't come up with Bailey,
[02:33:41] I'll settle for Mel Belly.
[02:33:43] I want one or the other to appear
[02:33:45] on the Channel 7 talk show.
[02:33:47] I'll make contact by telephone.
[02:33:50] Melvin Belly agrees right away.
[02:33:52] Just hours later, he's in the studio.
[02:33:54] Half of America is glued to their TVs.
[02:33:57] In a normal edition of the show, viewers can call in to participate, but tonight the lines
[02:34:01] are kept clear so the Zodiac Killer can get in touch.
[02:34:04] And he does.
[02:34:05] He even gives Belly his real name.
[02:34:07] Sam.
[02:34:08] What are you doing?
[02:34:09] Tell us what's going on inside you right now, Sam.
[02:34:12] I have...
[02:34:13] Belly.
[02:34:14] How long have you had those headaches, such Sam?
[02:34:19] In a long time?
[02:34:21] Sam hangs up and calls back.
[02:34:23] Eventually he loses control and simply screams over and over and he repeats his terrible threat
[02:34:33] Sam calls the show 35 times. Oh my god, he can't control it anymore chat. He can't control his urges to kill. He's going crazy
[02:34:44] Why would he tell him his real name?
[02:34:46] gift to five Joey thank you so much for the five gifted bro thank you only 12 of
[02:34:50] the calls are heard on there the longest of them is nine minutes that's long
[02:34:55] enough to trace the call and long enough to find out that Sam is not the Zodiac
[02:34:59] killer I knew it I told you a hospital patient suffering from a mental
[02:35:04] disorder I knew it bro shortly after the Chronicle receives two new letters
[02:35:08] from the real Zodiac inside the first envelope is a greeting card on the
[02:35:12] front it says sorry I haven't written but I just wash my pin the message inside
[02:35:19] reads I thought you would need a good laugh before you hear the bad news you
[02:35:24] won't get the news for a while yet yes could you print this new cipher in your
[02:35:29] front page I did awfully lonely when I am ignored so lonely I could know these
[02:35:35] cups suck chat these cups are ass bro it's composed of 340 characters and it
[02:35:42] won't be solved for five decades.
[02:35:45] December 3, 2020.
[02:35:47] Three men set at their computers
[02:35:49] on different sides of the planet.
[02:35:50] American software developer David Aranichek,
[02:35:53] Belgian computer programmer Yarl Van Icke,
[02:35:55] and Australian mathematician Sam Blake.
[02:35:57] For years, they've been collaboratively obsessing
[02:36:00] over the same mystery.
[02:36:01] The 340-character cipher, the Zodiac killer,
[02:36:03] sent to the San Francisco Chronicle
[02:36:05] following the teaser.
[02:36:06] Wait, so how do they find him?
[02:36:07] With his first riddle solved within a week,
[02:36:09] Zodiac must have made a bigger effort.
[02:36:11] His second cipher was almost certainly created with pen and paper, too, but it proved complex enough to remain unbroken for 51 years.
[02:36:18] Wait, he's never been found still to this day?
[02:36:26] Still God.
[02:36:31] So people still don't know who the zodiac killer is. That's cruel.
[02:36:34] This isn't for lack of trying. Numerous experts have reportedly taken a crack at what has become known as the...
[02:36:39] Probably dead now, yeah.
[02:36:41] The American Cryptogram Association, Navy cryptographers, countless amateur code breakers, and the NSA.
[02:36:47] David Yarl and Sam alone have already spent years trying to break it.
[02:36:51] They know it's homophonic. Z340 consists of 63 different symbols, so every plain text letter is represent-
[02:36:57] Wait, how do they know it's homophobic? Why?
[02:36:59] David Yarl and Sam alone have already spent years trying to break it.
[02:37:03] They know it's homophonic.
[02:37:05] Z340 consists of 63 different symbols,
[02:37:07] so every plain text letter is represented by several.
[02:37:10] But they have another theory.
[02:37:11] If they can't read it, how do they know he's homophobic?
[02:37:13] I don't get it.
[02:37:15] The Zodiac killer must have done something else
[02:37:17] to his message before encrypting it.
[02:37:19] They start experimenting.
[02:37:21] Sam sends David a total of 650,000 variations of the cipher.
[02:37:25] David runs them all through a code-breaking code
[02:37:27] I wrote by Yarl called EZ decrypt.
[02:37:30] For months, thousands of these results look like gibberish.
[02:37:33] But today, December 3rd, David suddenly stumbles on some real words in one of the solutions.
[02:37:38] Hope you are, trying to catch me, and the gas chamber.
[02:37:42] He almost overlooks them.
[02:37:44] But these words will be the key to finally solving Z340.
[02:37:47] Oh my god, I don't know.
[02:37:48] The Zodiac killer's first cipher was delivered in three separate letters,
[02:37:51] so Yarl proposes splitting the 340 cipher into three.
[02:37:54] The first two sections comprise two paragraphs.
[02:37:57] Each has nine lines.
[02:37:58] The third is just two lines.
[02:38:00] They rearrange the cipher using a diagonal reading rule.
[02:38:03] They start by writing out the symbol in the upper left hand corner.
[02:38:06] Then they move one symbol down and two to the right.
[02:38:09] I'm not going to lie.
[02:38:09] Like, dude, this is like some coding shit.
[02:38:12] Like this is crazy to even for him to even know how to like write like this.
[02:38:16] This is insane.
[02:38:18] What does that mean?
[02:38:18] Simple there.
[02:38:19] This continues until they reach the edge of the cipher.
[02:38:22] Then they repeat this game starting with the top row's second letter.
[02:38:25] Then comes the final tweak.
[02:38:27] As it searches for the rest of the key.
[02:38:29] David tells Yarl's decrypting software to retain the words he found before.
[02:38:33] Hope you were trying to catch me and gas chamber.
[02:38:36] He clicks a button and boom, a phrase pops out.
[02:38:40] That wasn't me on the TV show.
[02:38:42] David leaps out of his chair yelling, holy s***.
[02:38:45] He knows the Zodiac sent this cipher about two weeks after Sam called into the TV show.
[02:38:50] They're on the right track.
[02:38:52] Apart from being a homophonic substitution cipher, Z340 is also transposition cipher.
[02:38:57] The plaintext characters have been shifted according to a more or less regular system.
[02:39:02] The international team has to make some final adjustments.
[02:39:06] Some words are misspelled, spelled backwards or exempted from the diagonal reading rule.
[02:39:10] But eventually they come up with a coherent message.
[02:39:12] What is it?
[02:39:13] Two days later the FBI confirms it.
[02:39:15] In his message, Zodiac clarifies that he isn't afraid of death.
[02:39:19] He believes dying will bring him to paradise, where all of his victims will serve him
[02:39:23] as slaves.
[02:39:24] I hope you are having lots of fun trying to catch me.
[02:39:27] Oh, hell no.
[02:39:51] Yo, boy!
[02:39:57] 51-year-old cipher is a small sensation among people still fascinated by the case they've cracked the cipher 50 years later
[02:40:07] But it doesn't bring investigators any closer to actually solving it
[02:40:12] Back in 1969 who knows how many people he's killed since then with the TV show
[02:40:17] This one is a seven-page diatribe aimed at the police
[02:40:20] The killer mockingly refers to the officers as blue pigs and accuses them of making blatant mistakes in the manhunt
[02:40:27] The letter also includes a drawing.
[02:40:30] It's a sketch of a bomb Zodiac wants to plant on the school bus.
[02:40:34] The threat isn't made public, but it stokes fear of a potential school bus attack.
[02:40:39] Investigators are growing desperate.
[02:40:41] About two months after the murder of taxi driver Paul Stein, a self-proclaimed seer named
[02:40:46] Joseph DeLewis comes forward.
[02:40:48] A few years ago, he accurately predicted that the Kennedy family would be hit by
[02:40:52] a horrible tragedy.
[02:40:53] Now he claims to have been receiving mental transmissions from the Zodiac killer.
[02:40:58] He says he's begun to form a mental picture of Zodiac and to receive detailed insight into
[02:41:02] the killer's personal life.
[02:41:04] The Louise feels that Zodiac prefers walking over driving, that he spent time in some kind
[02:41:09] of reform institution when he was young.
[02:41:11] He consumes drugs like speed or goofballs before going out to kill.
[02:41:15] His star sign is either Scorpio or Aquarius, and he has a little box where he keeps
[02:41:20] the things that drive him to commit his horrible crimes.
[02:41:23] To Louise offers to help the police, accompanied by officers from-
[02:41:27] Uh-oh.
[02:41:28] I missed that part a little bit.
[02:41:30] Drugs like speed or goofballs before going out to kill.
[02:41:33] His star sign is either Scorpio or Aquarius, and he has a little box where he keeps the
[02:41:38] things that drive him to commit his horrible crimes.
[02:41:41] To Louise offers to help the police, accompanied by officers from two police departments,
[02:41:46] he visits the crime scenes to pick up more vibrations.
[02:41:49] The psychic develops intuition about the killer's deep loneliness, love for flowers, and intense
[02:41:54] hatred of the police.
[02:41:57] Aside from that, his visits produce nothing of value.
[02:42:02] After Polstein's death, more and more people begin to actively engage with the case.
[02:42:06] The Mapa County Sheriff's Office receives hundreds of leads.
[02:42:09] The San Francisco PD gets almost a thousand.
[02:42:12] Concerned citizens start suspecting their neighbors, ex-husbands, and coworkers.
[02:42:17] In 1969 and in 1983, over 2,500 suspects are considered in San Francisco alone, but most
[02:42:24] of it leads nowhere.
[02:42:25] Throughout the 1970s, police investigators keep coming back to one man in particular,
[02:42:30] Arthur Lee Allen.
[02:42:32] He's the only suspect ever publicly named by the police.
[02:42:36] In 1971, a former friend of Allen's contacts the authorities.
[02:42:39] He tells them Allen repeatedly expressed disturbing fantasies about killing couples and school
[02:42:44] children and sending cryptic letters about his murders to the police.
[02:42:48] The friend claims he even considered calling himself Zodiac.
[02:42:52] So police begin investigating Arthur Lee Allen.
[02:42:55] He matches the killer's general description.
[02:42:57] He said to have known Darlene casually and to have lived in Balejo at the time of his
[02:43:01] murders.
[02:43:02] He also owned a typewriter of the same model allegedly used to type some of the Zodiac
[02:43:06] letters.
[02:43:07] Multiple search warrants are issued for him over the years.
[02:43:10] Neither Allen's fingerprints nor his handwriting matched the existing evidence.
[02:43:14] Years later, advances in DNA analysis effectively ruled him out as the Zodiac Killer, posthumously.
[02:43:20] Allen dies in 1992 at the age of 58.
[02:43:23] He was never formally charged with anything.
[02:43:26] Over time, investigators in amateur sleuths identify numerous potential suspects.
[02:43:32] But like Allen, none can be conclusively linked to the crimes.
[02:43:35] The Zodiac remains a ghost.
[02:43:37] much so that a 2020 book proposes another wild but highly intriguing theory. What if the
[02:43:43] Zodiac Killer never existed? What if it-
[02:43:45] Hey, what's up, Michael? I think the perks are hidden, bro. I'm falling asleep here, bro.
[02:43:51] I'm not gonna lie. I'm gonna just get off, dude. I'm trying to stay awake, but these
[02:43:56] perks are hidden, bro, and I'm just falling asleep trying to watch the video.
[02:44:00] I
[02:44:07] Finished the vid
[02:44:13] I'll be honest, bro. I don't got it in me
[02:44:16] These perks are heated like a truck right now. But wait, what time is it? What time is it?
[02:44:26] 12
[02:44:28] to the last. Shit, I might just pop another one. I might just pop another one. A lot of
[02:44:50] I'm not addicted bro, I'm just about to understand the pain
[02:44:58] I start getting pain and then I start dozing off
[02:45:02] Before I know it, I just sound asleep bro
[02:45:06] I'm not a drug addict, I'm not a drug addict, bro, but hey, listen, I'm going to bed chat.
[02:45:26] I'm fucking tired.
[02:45:27] I'm sitting here falling asleep trying to watch this video.

[02:45:53] won't be live tomorrow and then I have to drive back to LA I don't know I'll
[02:45:58] keep y'all updated um but I'm probably not gonna be live for like normal streams
