one gold star oh okay so that means it's illustration rare every time I get an
illustration rare it adds five dollars okay and then the big boy this is a
special illustration rare whoa and you can tell because there's two way there's
two gold stars at the bottom so if we pull one of these which this is a big
deal so for example this card I did pull I pulled this at twitchcon this card is
worth five hundred dollars
So pulling a card like this is a pretty big deal.
If you pull one of these, it'll add $10.

This is really sweet chat. I think you're gonna like this. Okay, so I very
really doesn't know I have Crohn's disease. I was diagnosed when I was 10,
but I probably developed it when I was 9. I was severely underweight. I was
constantly going to the bathroom. Doctors didn't know what was wrong with me.
And plus we lived on an Air Force Base because my dad was in the military. And so
they basically told my parents that they thought I had cancer and to like prepare for the worst.
Luckily it wasn't cancer and it was just Crohn's disease and I've been really lucky to have really
good doctors um to like help me and I'm in remission everything's fine now but I found this.
So when I was a kid like when I first got diagnosed I had to get IV infusions
And so my very first IV infusion that I got my parents got this for me at the hospital gift shop
It's a little monkey and all these bandages on it were the bandages from my IV infusions
I mean there was more this is like all that I could fit on it
Yeah, but so you know just imagine I was I was 10 years old
I was 10 11 years old going through this and I had to like do this so
You know your donations are helping kids even though like I said I didn't have cancer, but you know your donations are helping kids

is about gymnastics. So there's quite a variety you know of things that a person

by the way. All of this is full of like actual newspapers that I've been digging for. I've
done a ton of research on this. This one says, family feud has fatal result. Shooting comes
as the culmination of seven years of bitter hatred. You remember mentioning this now?

from them despite a lot of trying, but we do know that the potato famine was in 1845 to 1852-ish,
so them coming around 1850, that makes sense. A lot of people immigrated to the US around that time,
about two million in fact. They likely moved to Iowa around that time, around 1850. There were a lot
of Irish immigrants there because there's a lot of cheap land and also a big lead mining boom
in Dubuque, Iowa. But it shows Thomas, so the deceased father, working in a post office in
Dubuque in 1870 in the census. I know lead, right? It all comes back to lead. Everything comes back
to live. So this is not them. This is just a picture. It's an image. But this is that 1870
census. It's a little bit hard to read in the PowerPoint, I would say, but this is the one
that shows the family in 1870 when they were living in Dubuque with the kids and stuff and
him working in the post office, which I think is kind of interesting to see the actual census.
They're highlighted here for you, for you to see. But again, it's not really legible when it's this
small. And then this is some more information on our victim. So this is my great, great grandfather.
His name is William F. Connell. He was born in 1866. He died on May 24th of 1907, which hilariously
is tomorrow. I did not even plan that. That just worked out. Sorry, maybe not hilariously.
That's today for you. Yeah, there you go. Today in England. But he was a farmer. He
lived in Johnson County, Iowa. He was married twice first to Elizabeth
Muharin. She died in 1891. Then she died in 1895. And then he married
Catherine Kate Borts, who I'm related to in 1901. This is his actual grave. It's
William Connell, 1866 to 1908. He died in 1907, but a lot of times, like, families couldn't
afford to buy a headstone. And so, like, they probably didn't have a headstone until 1908,
and so it was, like, miscarved. But I know for a fact there's newspaper articles about this.
He died in 1907. They had six kids together. William Conner Jr. is the first one. Bernard
Connell, then Patrick, then Alfred, then Louie, and then Julia. I put a star next to her because
that's who we are related to. I say we like a few. Julia is my great grandmother. Note how
she was born on December 5th, 1907. He died on May 24th, 1907. So his wife had five young children
and she was pregnant when this happened, which is really terrible. That really sucks. And yeah,
my great-grandma never met him because he passed when she was not yet born. So that really, really
is sad. But he's buried in Old St. Joseph's Cemetery in Iowa City. This is actually a picture of him.
Found at my grandma's house when I was there over Christmas. Got so excited because I previously
did not have one. That's literally him. Unhinged mustache, by the way. Um, that too. So, um,
just to give you some, uh, some of the picture of what we're looking at. Um, somebody said,
I remember you talking about this, but I thought your grandfather was the murderer. Oh my god.
They're giving me the donation. Anyway, you can see the resemblance. Oh my god. So this is on my
mom's side. So this is my mom's great-grandfather. But I'll have some more pictures that I'll show
you later on in the thing. But there's William, our buddy Will. I'm going to call him Connell
throughout the PowerPoint. So that's his last name, but that's because it's what's quoted in all of
the newspapers. So I'll show you that as we go. Is that not Stanley? Can we make seven years of
bitter hatred a topic on your island? Oh my god, wait, maybe I will. I'm going to write that down.
That would be hilarious if my niece started talking about seven years of bitter hatred,
quoting the newspaper article about my great-great-grandfather's murder.
Seven years of bitter hatred. Okay. I wrote it down. Anyway, this is some more information now
about the suspect. His name is Elmer Gaylord Pratt. He was born in October of 1864 and he died in 1946.
so he lived a long time. He was also a farmer from Johnson County, Iowa. He was married to
Henrietta Stevenson in 1888. He had no children. This is sort of like this, here's his name, Elmer
Pratt on this. This is like a document of like registering for the selective service. So it's
just like a list of all the men in the town basically. But that's like a record of him. So
he wasn't actually in the military, but he was registered for the selective service like
like, a lot of men are.
This is a little family tree to kind of give you
some context about how we're related to this man.
Here's the dead guy.
Then we have his daughter.
And then we have her daughter, my grandma,
then my mom, then me.
I get so gay, Lord, off that tequila

So to give you some more context also about Iowa in the early 1900s, it's a largely rural
agricultural state with a lot of small farming communities.
A lot of these families are like growing their own food, raising their own livestock, their
canning produce to last through the winter, their homes are being heated with wood or
with coal.
There's not really electricity or indoor plumbing at this time, especially not in these rural
communities.
And people will often travel by horse-drawn carriage into town to like purchase supplies,
socialize, find entertainment.
I have some pictures.
This is a picture that I found when I was there at Christmas.
This is literally the house.
This is the house that they lived in.
My grandma had this like oval shaped, this is the exact picture, it's kind of damaged,
but this is the house they lived in.
And this child on the porch there is my great-grandmother.
So that's Julia sitting on the porch.
So that's wild.
But yeah, they lived there with all six kids.
Eventually, well, I'm not going to say anything else, but there was more people living there
too because my great-grandmother's mom remarried eventually.
It's a cute house, but the photo's kind of damaged, obviously.
And then this is another picture.
This is not their house.
I just thought that this kind of contextualizes maybe what the rest of the land might have
looks like because I don't have any photos of that picture like this lane
that's gonna come back into context soon they have their crops they have some
barns there's like a horse and a carriage back there too just to kind of
set the scene a little bit more this is a picture of Iowa City downtown at the
time my family lived about six miles away from Iowa City and again six miles
away via horse and carriage so not that close but this is kind of what Iowa City
looked like and they would have been going there. This is a picture of the
State University of Iowa, the old capital. We have this is Metropolitan Hall,
the finest theater built in 1858. So we have that. These are some storefronts.
This picture was taken around 1905, so like maybe they would have walked around
here. I don't know. I'm just trying to contextualize it like I said. And then
this is a horse-drawn buggy in Iowa City. This picture was taken in 1910, but
But again, it's very close in time, so how do I get all this stuff?
Oh, by doing so much research, like so much research for a long time.
So anyway, this is the kind of thing maybe he would have driven into town in.

Anyway, and now I want to set the scene a little bit more.
So this is also just a drawing, but it's kind of a picture of like some houses that
were neighbors, and you can see they have like shared fence border, right? So Connell,
our dead guy, and Pratt, the murderer, live on neighboring farms about six miles northeast
of Iowa City. There's a long lane between the properties. The Connells are to the east
and the Pratt's live to the west, and there's been a feud brewing between these two farmers
since Pratt moved to the area about six years ago. Okay, they've always kind of hated each

These are some quotes from newspapers about this murder. So there's a little
bit of like there's some conflicting information in the newspapers and we
have to also remember who the person that is speaking is, right? So like this is
from JJ Bortz. This is the our murder victims brother-in-law and business
partner. Okay, so what's he gonna say versus what somebody else is gonna say,
right? But it says Connell and Pratt had a disagreement about 15 years ago about
a fence or a gate and during it Pratt threw a hammer at Connell. Since that
time neither of the men spoke and avoided each other entirely. Okay, so only
problem here is 15 years ago, I thought they've been feuding for six or maybe
seven years, JJ said 15. So I don't know, but maybe the hammer thing is true.
Then it says Pratt has also told of a gate incident in which Connell jumped on him with
a club.
So there clearly was some kind of fence or gate related dispute.
Maybe Connell had a club, maybe Pratt had a hammer.
There's been some drama.
It seems like there's been something going on.
This one says, the shooting is the outgrowth of a long enduring feud between Connell and
Pratt.
It has been in existence as long as the period Connell has spent on his farm.
And then this one says, the deed he did last evening, this is like talking about Pratt
and the murder, is a great surprise and shock to his many friends.
His drastic action is a mystery unless the feud between the men had developed to a high
pitch.
But if it did, it seems to be an unknown fact to the friends of the two.
So everyone knew they hated each other, but like nobody thought that anyone was going to
die basically, right?
Like sure they were feuding.
Sounds like maybe it was a property dispute.
Like I'm kind of picturing like maybe they were mad about who's like how far this fence
should be over and it's in that.
We don't really know, doesn't ever say.
But based on like the talk about the fence and the gate, it seems like it's some kind
of property dispute, right?
But you might hate your neighbor, doesn't mean you're going to kill him.
So everybody in town was like, this is unhinged.
this has escalated so quickly, how did this happen, right? Nobody expected that from them.
So on the day of the murder, William Connell leaves in the early afternoon to go to attend
some business matters in town. So he goes into Iowa City. And while he's there, there's evidence
of this in the newspapers because people like talked about how they had seen him that day.
He went to a dental college. He signed a contract with like some contractors to discuss doing grading
work on the farm and he met with the county attorney. So several men met with him and
talked to him that day and said that he seemed like he was in a good mood, he was in good
spirits, he was happy. Didn't seem like the kind of guy who was going to go get into a
big fight later, but you never know. And then he traveled back to the farm around the supper
hour, okay? And then it was talking about him arriving like close to the time of sunset,
blah, blah, blah. My guess is that it was around 7.30 or 8 o'clock at night when he
got back. And there's like this lane between the farms. Okay, he's driving up this lane
between the farms, and a buck shot was fired by Elmer Pratt, which hit him in the chest.
Buck shots are like large lead shots, and there's multiple pellets. I know not a lead
again, it's always lead, it all comes back to lead. But these have been shotguns. So
basically it like sprays a bunch of lead bullets. Sorry to bring that up on stream, but you
Unfortunately, Connell suffered multiple fatal wounds. He was shot near his heart, but because
it was like a spray of bullets that also got like his chest and his arms and stuff. One
of the two horses was also injured by this shot. The horses like broke into a run and
dashed into the barn where the brother-in-law was working, but Connell was left in the buggy.
Don't worry, I did check, Connell brought the horse into the vet the next day, and I
think in this time period, if the horse was severely wounded, they would have, you know,
and they didn't.
So I think the horse was okay.
So that's relief.
Unfortunately, my great-great-grandfather was not okay, but the brother-in-law did check on the horse too, so that's nice.
But anyway, so at the time the kids are all home, the brother-in-law is home, and his wife are home.
They hear the shot, of course. They run outside.
They rush to the buggy. They lift Connell out of the buggy.
They bring him inside the house, and they attempt to provide aid to him, but like he got shot in his heart, so he died.
Sorry to say.
Um, this is a quote from the brother-in-law, JJ.
Um, I carried Connell into the house where we removed some of his clothing, but we could
do nothing for him.
He managed to say, Jack, and also looked at his wife, but the end soon came.
I think the end soon came is like a really fantastic way of putting that.

I assumed JJ was Jack, but everybody calls him JJ.
So he would have loved the pen horse.

this up. So tragedy is enacted near Oasis last night. Elmer Pratt shoots neighbor. W. F.
Connell dies few moments later. Old time feud sees gruesome climax. Self defense alleged
by friends of prisoner denied by others. So that's the other thing. They call Pratt prisoner
in all of the articles, which is wild, but kind of funny. So they call him prisoner. I didn't
like put the whole clipping here so this it like continues down this way and it starts again.
But anyway, to form into speech was a mere wordless moan. I assume was talking about what
Connell said when he was dying. Dyson wipes arms on the way. The death rattle sounded. It's fatal
more and the man breathed his last. Sorry, that's not funny. Just the way they write this stuff,
these papers are unhinged. You're going to see some really unhinged things. It's like brutal.
Okay, so Pratt turned himself in. He shot my great-great-grandfather and then immediately was
like, I'll turn myself in. So after he committed the crime, he notified the sheriff of Johnson
County and he stayed at hand, I'm going to stay at my house until you come and arrest me.
The Muscatine Journal said, during the conversations, he was exceptionally cool and seemed to have no fear whatsoever of the consequences.
Weird vibes! Like, you're saying that you just shot someone in self-defense, but you're, like, way too calm, cool, and collected.
Like, kind of strange, right? Like, why are you being nonchalant about this?
I'm gonna read this part, too.
read this part 2. After having committed the terrible deed Pratt went into the house and
called up Sheriff Rowland by telephone and told him of the occurrence and concluded by
stating that he would remain at the house until the officer arrived to place him under
arrest. After talking to Rowland he called upon Dr. E. E. Hobby, the Johnson County Coroner
and also W. J. MacDonald, the county attorney, and gave them the facts of the case. During
the conversations he was exceptionally cool and seemed to have no fear whatever of the
consequences. Weird, weird vibes. Anyway, so Elmer Pratt now is like talking to his
brother-in-law and talking to everyone, trying to say a self-defense. These are a
couple of quotes from him. He said, it was to protect my name, my honor, my wife,
and my family. Okay. And then here's where things get a little bit juicier,
Okay, because Mrs. Pratt, his wife, said that her husband had been shot at several times
during the last month.
And so he believed that he had to protect himself.
Okay, so maybe my great-great-grandpa shot at him, but he didn't hit him.
And there's no evidence of this.
You just said so.
Maybe he did, maybe he didn't.
I don't know.
Pratt claims that he acted in self-defense.
self-defense, he told the sheriff, well, you have to defend your home. We're gonna
come back to that. Bear in mind, he's telling the sheriff you have to defend
your home. When you learn where the shots were fired from, just remember, he said
he was defending his home. He also accused Connell of firing shots at him
yesterday. There's no evidence of that. And they had obviously argued previously,
but this is a really extreme escalation of the feud between the two. So no one
thought anybody was gonna die. So this is another newspaper article. I want to read
the whole thing. Mr. Pratt returned to his home where he informed his wife of the deed.
She immediately telephoned to this city informing her brother, SK Stevenson, of the affair,
where it was also sent to Sheriff Roland and together these two men set out for the Pratt
home. Upon arriving there, Sheriff Roland took Mr. Pratt in charge, remarking that it was
pretty serious business, but he only answered, Well, you have to defend your home. And he
afterwards remarked that he didn't think Connell was hurt very badly, as he had shot rather
But alas, this was not the case.
But alas, this was not the case.
It's so funny.
These articles are unhidden, I'm telling you.
Anyway, that was the Iowa City Press that said that.
So now, Pratt is facing trial, okay?
the preliminary examination takes place
in just an improvised courtroom in the small town in June.
So it's been a couple of weeks.
Bear in mind, this is a really small town
and like everybody knows everybody in this town
because there's not many people living there
and they're all kind of neighbors and stuff.
So the fact that there is a murder is wild.
Like everybody is losing their minds about this.
This case is like sensationalized
because they were like unbelievable
has actually happened here next to us.
And so that's why there's one of articles about it
and how they were able to find a lot of evidence about it.
And in this preliminary examination,
the witnesses there testified that Connell
had threatened Pat Pratt before.
So Pratt's friends were like, no guys.
He was threatening him constantly,
but they never gave any direct quotes
or any actual examples.
And then some guy called Louis Smith,
called my great grandpa, quarrelsome in nature,
but he never gave any actual details about that.
And the caliber of the threats was not definitively
subscribe, described. So basically, like, yeah, maybe we were making threats at him. Maybe
we're quarrelsome in nature. Okay, but like you shot and killed him. So anyway, Pratt
does not get released on bail, and he gets held in a local jail until he's placed on
trial in the district court. So that happens a little bit later. That's now it's October
and we're in district court. This is a packed courtroom. Okay, everybody in town wants to
see this. Of course they do. This is a big deal. Like this is wild. So it's like sensationalized.
The state is trying to prove that Pratt premeditated the murder. Obviously Pratt's trying to say that
it was self-defense. And the case was like a huge deal at the time obviously because everybody knew
all of them. Like Pratt was pretty well known in the community so they were all kind of like
how could he do this? I'm just shocked that he could kill someone. They did have some witnesses
there testify saying that the defendant, so Pratt, had multiple times previously said that
he would kill Connell and that one or the other of us will be killed. So more than one witness
was like, yeah, he kept talking about killing him and then he killed him. So case closed,
like, makes sense, right? Well, then the coroner testifies that Connell was shot in the back.
OK, so Pratt's claiming that he did it in self-defense.
The coroner's like, no, you shot him in the back.
So how is it self-defense if you shot him in the back?
That doesn't make any sense.
All right, interesting.
Here's a couple of newspaper articles.

nine-year-old son of victim is center of fire.
So they based a lot of this on the testimony of a child
because the key witness is Connell's nine-year-old son.
But the newspapers kept calling the boy nine, right?
Connell did not have a nine-year-old son at this time.
He had a 14-year-old son and his second eldest son was only six.
So it's either the 14-year-old or the six-year-old.
I think that they're more likely to mistake the nine-year-old or the six-year-old for nine
than the 14-year-old for nine, right? So it's probably the six-year-old that they're putting
on the stand, which is wild. What do you mean? But basically the boy says that he saw his father
come home the night of the shooting and he like watched him run up the lane and then he heard
the gunshot and saw like a bunch of smoke coming up over some trees. So he like started to see him
coming up but then he got blocked by trees and then he saw the smoke and heard the gunshot
but he never saw Pratt. Okay so what's important about that is that Pratt says he was further down
the road like close to his house when the shooting took place and he fired in self-defense but then
the boy says that he saw his dad coming up the lane on their property so how can it be self-defense
if you're on their property. So anyway, we don't really know. There's a lot of like back and
forth here. We're relying on the testimony of a six-year-old, but I think it's likely that Bernard,
the six-year-old, is the one that was put on the stand. Unbelievable to make this baby child have
to talk about his father's murder. But anyway, this also really interested me. This says,
Mrs. Connell loses temper. This is so this is my great-grandmother, um, or great-great-grandmother, sorry, um,
attacks one of the Pratt witnesses at courthouse at Iowa City. So this is October 10th, bear in mind
she gave birth in December, so she's pretty heavily pregnant. The defense and the Elmer Pratt trial
rested today and the arguments are in progress. Mrs. William Connell, wife of the man Pratt killed,
attacked one of the witnesses in the courthouse lobby today. The presiding judge sent an officer
to put an end to the trouble. They don't explain anything else about this. There's no other context.
I wish I had more context so bad. I want to know what happened so bad. But like imagine this,
you're extremely pregnant. You already have five kids. And these people are like defending the guy
who killed your husband. He killed your husband at your house. And these people are like, no, no,
no, no, he's like such a nice guy. Like anyway, so no wonder she attacked him. Like she deserved to
attack them again. I think she's innocent. They had it coming. Anyway, so now this is a direct,
all of this text is copied from the newspaper, all right, because this is unhinged. So I'm going
to read it out loud to you. Seldom has there been a more dramatic climax to a murder trial
than presented this afternoon by Elmer Pratt, as he told in his own defense the story of the
the shooting of William Connell. So this is the only actual, like, account of what happened
that we have. Of course, it's from the murderer. So there's probably some embellishments here,
but this is the story of what he claims happens. And this is, again, the newspaper said this.
After drearily reciting a long series of insults, injuries, and threats suffered by him from Connell,
who was known as a bully, Pratt told him of going to take down a fence put up by Connell
and taking a shotgun with him for self-protection,
because Connell had fired shots over his head a day before.
Returning from his work, Pratt said
he saw Connell driving down the lane.
Here, Pratt stood up, moved about,
and reenacted the scenes of the shooting
while a packed courtroom listened
as to the tragedy of a stage performance.
Okay, so bear in mind, this man was so calm, cool,
and collected he didn't even care after he shot him.
And now, he's standing up, I'm picturing him like,
waving, talking about this story and reenacting it in the courtroom.
He's unhinged. Performance. They're comparing it to a stage performance. This is him in the courtroom.
Stage performance. Unhinged. So these are quotes.
Connell dashed his horses under whip toward me, cursing, swearing, shouting,
You'd shoot me, would you?" he called. And I said,
No, I won't. I ran towards the gate and then Connell shouted,
Then, gosh darn you, I'll shoot you. So I turned around in the gateway, he raised up in his seat,
cursing and swearing, and again he shouted that he would kill me and put his right hand
toward his hip pocket as though he was going to pull out a gun. He looked like a demon.
He was white and frothed at the mouth. I cocked my gun and fired without putting it to my shoulder.
So he described in court my great-great-grandpa as looking like a demon that was white and
froth of the mouth.
What?
So bear in mind also, he's claiming it self-defense and that my grandpa was going to shoot at him,
but the coroner said he got shot in the back.
So what is the truth, Pratt?
What is the truth?
It does seem like my grandpa was a bad man.
sure he's angry, sure he's aggressive. He probably did fire shots at you. Fine, whatever.
But you don't have to call him a demon. Anyway, when he had finished his recital, Pratt was
limped from the excitement he had undergone, and the crowd in the courtroom was almost
equally exhausted from the strain of the incident.
Like the newspaper articles I'm telling you are so unhinged from this, like I just can't
believe it.

But it was the most dramatic climax to Iowa City's murder trial case.

Pratt entered the courtroom pale and nervous, but with a clear countenance.
Taking his usual seat, he listened to the reading of the verdict by Judge Howell
without show of emotion. I think this also just points to the fact that this man is unhinged.
Like, he had no emotion when he killed him, and then he finally had emotion when he was reenacting it, and then he's like back stone cold again.

I was on a little bit, I got a little bit carried away, my actual grandma, yeah, I mean my mom did
the donation, but my grandma sent her the money because my grandma doesn't know how to use total

for the verdict. The verdict. We, the jury, find a defendant, Elmer Pratt, not guilty.
Elmer Pratt is set free. He and his lawyers successfully argue that the crime was committed
in self-defense. So these are some quotes from the newspaper. From the first, a large majority of
of the jurors favored and acquittal, but one or two held out through the five hours for
a verdict of manslaughter. When the jury went to dinner today, all but one juror were for
a verdict of not guilty. After the jury returned to its room, some loud discussion was heard,
and the ballot was subsequently taken, which freed Elmer Pratt from all legal responsibility
for the death of William Connell. So they were all on his side. Elmer Pratt is set free.
majority favor his acquittal from the first.
I mean like, they believe the demon story on hinge.
So this is interesting also.
This is like sort of some more information
on the character of my grandfather.
Connell has had considerable trouble during recent years
and has figured in the police court on several occasions.
Several years ago, well in a fight,
He was shot by John Murphy of Iowa City and rather seriously wounded.
Okay, so it seems like maybe grandpa has a history of getting into fights and maybe he
has a history of getting shot at, maybe for a reason, sure.
But he didn't have to die.
And then this conversely is how Pratt is described in the paper.

Pratt has always led an honorable life and possesses a good reputation.
He is related to several well-known residents of Johnson County, and a strenuous effort
will be made to free him of the charge.
Hmm.
Okay.
Right.
Right.
Right.
So you know the people that are in the court.
Suddenly that's making a little bit more sense.
Interesting.
And they just admitted to it as well.
They just say it in the paper.
Anyway, so based on my research, I don't believe that Pratt should have been acquitted.
Obviously, maybe I have a bias, I don't know, I don't actually know or care about these
people, right?
But it just seems like based on what is published in the papers at the time, and of course we
don't actually have a lot of documentation on this, aside from the newspapers and their
kind of sensationalizing it, but like it doesn't seem like there's evidence that it was in
self-defense.
The doctor testified that he was shot in the back, so I don't see how like, oh, he was
pulling a gun on me so I shot him could be true, like if he was shot in the back.
So this is 1907, Owen. Also Pratt had previously mentioned to multiple others
that he wished Connell was dead, like quoted as saying he wished Connell was
dead, but there's no actual quote evidence of threats made by Connell. So
yeah, people said Connell kept threatening him, but what did he say? What

But Connell was told that we wanted him dead, but Connell never actually said anything like
that.
Pratt was saying that.
So, and obviously the only key witness here is a child, and the testimony of the child
is getting ripped apart by the defense because he's a child.
So like, you have this little boy whose dad was murdered that you're trying to like count
on him and the other lawyers are like trying to prove him as being not trustworthy.
Well, he's a little kid.
So yeah, like, where did you find this case?
This is my family.
This is my great, great, great father.
Also obviously Pratt was well connected and well liked in town, so he benefited from his
influential relatives.
And I feel like if someone else had committed this crime, they wouldn't have gotten away
with it at this time, right?
But obviously, Pratt got lucky.
So, oh, go back.
Hold on.
I wanted to say more.
I do think what's interesting is it does seem like my relative was a bad man.
Like it seems like he's a really bad guy who everyone kind of hated.
He was very angry, very aggressive.
He was constantly like getting into fights with people and using weapons and like obviously
very quick to anger and they shouldn't have been fighting like this over a fence gate.
Yeah.
So, you know, he's not innocent in this seems like he really sucks.
But also he got murdered.
He probably didn't have to die, you know?
He was just simply quarrelsome in nature, you know?
Anyway, drama, Pratt refused to pay his lawyers.
So he murdered someone, got away with it, and then didn't pay his legal fees.
So after being acquitted, he ran off without paying the lawyers, and they sued his father
for the balance to do of $1,000 at the time,
which is $34,465 today.
So he ended up paying $260
and refused to pay the rest of the balance
by claiming that no contract was ever entered
with the lawyers.
What does that mean?
I don't think lawyers and no contract really like,
but anyway, he didn't pay the rest of it.
So yeah, he got away with that one too somehow.
Like I just, he's making his own rules.
I know.
So the aftermath, unfortunately,
Connell's family, my family suffered greatly
after he passed away.
So obviously they're running this farm.
They don't have any money.
And at the time, especially, you know,
like being a widowed woman, like she can't work.
Like they don't know what's gonna hire her.
Like she's always kids to take care of.
So she was pregnant and had five children
all under the age of 14 to take care of.
She did very quickly remarry to a man called James Anderson,
which makes sense because she would have needed help
at the time, having one more child.
And she lived until 1961 when she passed away at the age of 81.
So I think things turned out okay for her later.
And people speak fondly of James Anderson
and it seems like he was a really nice guy.
which is really great. I think that's good that that happened, and I think it's good also that
the kids had maybe a more positive role model in their life who wasn't the angry, aggressive man
who kept getting shot at by being so angry and aggressive. Not to say he deserved it, I'm just
saying like maybe it's good that we had James instead. So this is her actual grave, also it's
in Iowa City still. And this is the picture of the farmhouse. Again, I just wanted to show you
this one more time this is where it happened and that obviously is my great great my this is my
great grandmother um and on the back of it I wanted to show you this it says Julia Connell on
porch of house where her father was shot in lane I just think that's so funny I mean it's not funny
but like I just think it's funny that it was written there so who out at that I think my grandma
wrote this I mean it might have been I don't know I'm guessing my grandma is the one who wrote that
It looks like my grandma's handwriting, but it could have been her parents, maybe? But I doubt it. I think that my grandma wrote this, so, in lane.
It looks like maybe she's holding a dog or something, too, but I can't really tell and it's kind of like small and poor quality, so.
Anyway, so what happened to Pratt after this, right? He moved to a small town called Wokomi in Oklahoma.
Today, it's about a nine-hour drive from Johnson County, Iowa to Wacom.
In 2020, they had a population of 1,286 people, but in 1910, when he moved there, there were
533 people.
He also briefly moved to Sloan, Iowa at some point between 1920 and 1930.
His wife, Henrietta, passed away from Addison's disease in 1922, so I'm guessing they like
dipped and moved to Oklahoma because he was a murderer. And then it looked oh oh it looks
like grandma Julia's handwriting not your mom's. There you go. So this Julia the little
girl in the photo wrote that herself. So there you go. So my thought is that he probably moved
back to Iowa to be with her family when she was sick and then he came back to Oklahoma
afterward alone. He worked as a miller in the flour and feed industry. In his later years
The census hasn't just listed as doing odd jobs.
He never had any children and he passed away at 81
after a brief illness.

can see it a little bit better and kind of picture
what it might have looked like there.
This is Elmer Pratt in the 1920 census.
So when he was back in Iowa briefly,
which is kind of interesting.
I always think it's fun to see these census things.
This is his wife's death certificate
from when she passed away in 1922.
I couldn't find anybody else's death certificates,
but I could find hers.
So I've got that listed or shown here.
This is when he passed away, this is his obituary.
Says, while homie man dies funeral rights pending,
Elmer G. Pratt had been resident of community for 30 years.
Elmer G. Pratt 81 died Sunday afternoon
in an unit hospital after a short illness.
He was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon
from his home where he had lived for 30 years.
who was preceded in death by his wife, who died 25 years ago.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Martha Tenick
of Detroit, Michigan, and one brother,
Sanford Pratt of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Fawcett Funeral Home.
So, where's Pratt now?
In Garfield County, Oklahoma.
This is headstone.
This is the cemetery that he's buried in.
So something kind of interesting is that he lived with another family in this town in Oklahoma.
He's on the census with them.
They had young-ish kids.
So he was like in his 70s, and they had kids that were like six, eight, you know, like
younger, and he lived with them.
So maybe he was like boarding there, I don't know, or maybe they took him in.
I don't really know what happened, but they weren't his kids.
He never had any kids.
So he's adopted grandpa, I guess.
And then where is Kyle now?
This is, of course, Connell's headstone.
This is my great-great-grandpa.
He's in Iowa City.

And on the left is Julia, who is the baby
that they were pregnant with when the murder happened.
So this is grandma Julia.
She lived a very long, happy life, obviously.
But yeah, she was not yet born when her father was murdered.
But that's her.

But anyway, she has since passed away.
My grandma has not.
My grandma, this is Elbert, my grandmother.

I never met Julia, no.

So she died before I was born.
But yeah, there she is.

But yeah, the last name was Kendora.
So that's like her husband's name was Kendora.
So in my mind, that woman is grandma Kendora,
but her name is Julia.
I think Julia is also a beautiful name.
But, yeah, Rip, William F. Connell, that's the story of my great-great grandfather, who
was murdered.
So, what a ride.
I had a lot of fun, maybe fun is not the best word to say, but I had a lot of fun personally
doing all of the research for this because growing up, I had been told before that there
was like a murder in our family, but I was told that it was over a horse and like I didn't really
know what it was or what happened and so when I started digging into it a little bit more
it was really fun for me to like read all the newspapers and see like all the unhinged
ways they worded it and it was kind of interesting to see how like he kind of sucked.
Not to say he had it coming but like I don't know if you get into fights this much with people
and you're shooting at people randomly. At some point somebody's gonna shoot back.
Like... so anyway, he led a risky life. Alas, but alas, he led a risky life. I think it's
really unhinged that the murderer got away with it. I think there's probably some level of like
anti-Irish sentiment at the time, maybe a little bit too, happening in the town. So that might
have been part of it as well, but yeah, it's just it's very interesting to um to look into and read.
So and it really sucks that like the murderer was just fine afterward, but um anyway, anyway. But
I think that also makes a lot of sense as to why they were writing about Connell, like he's so
terrible, but Pratt is such an upstanding citizen, you know, like he killed someone over upends,
they're probably not an upstanding citizen anyway. Anyway, very interesting. So it's like
some nevitism as well, I think, with him being so well connected in town. It's giving bachelors
in history. Me and my history degree. Rip King, you would have loved anger management. Thank you.

it's her grandfather that was murdered,
but her mom was a baby, like not even a baby.
She was not born when this happened.
So there's a lot of like,
they maybe not have remembered too much.
And of course, I don't think that his wife
would have wanted to talk about it that much.
No, I didn't try and find the court records.
I was only mostly looking at like,
I was finding most of the stuff through newspaper things.
I haven't dug deep enough to try and find them.
It's possible also that I have presented this
with an incorrect point of view
and that there was more evidence
that it actually was self-defense
that just wasn't written about in the papers
or there was and those papers haven't been saved.
Like I, you know, all I know is what I read.
And there's a lot that we don't know,
but it's a fun story regardless.
So I don't, you know, I think it's fine.

why was he there and why did you bring the gun premeditated? I don't know. I don't know.

like how are they making money what were they doing in their free time like I just think that kind

newspaper archives for this, Alex, mostly. Because I was looking up like, like basically Iowa City
and like William F. Connell, Iowa City, Elmer Pratt, you know, 1907 murder, Iowa, like that kind of
of stuff to try and pull out a bunch of things about it. So anyway, it's fun to look into.
You can also, I've had some interesting finds, even like way more mundane about other relatives
from the past, because back in the day, they used to post the most like ridiculous boring stuff in
the newspaper. They were using it kind of like a, literally it's like a chat board. They, like it
it would be like oh so-and-so went to the movies on Friday with so-and-so and like they would have
submitted it themselves like about like the the drama of the weekend like the gossip of what
happened it's like Facebook you'd be like oh I went you know my neighbor my friend is coming in
town and we're gonna go to the movies like it's it's like old-fashioned social media like um so
you can possibly if you look up um relatives of yours not all of them but you might be able to
find like some random name. Maybe your great-grandma went out to dinner on a
random Tuesday. But that's like very small-town vibes. Like this is like, you
know, um, old stuff. So I've only found like a one my, um, on my dad's side, my
great-grandma on that side. I've seen her name a few times and stuff like that.
So no one else really. But anyway, community gossip was seen at the general
store, literally like that, yeah, or like went out of town to visit so-and-so, like...
It's just fun. It's fun to read about these things. So, you could also honestly, you could
just look up, like, if your town's been around for a long time, maybe try and look up archives
of the newspaper from just your town, and try and read some drama that was happening
a hundred years ago in your town. Like, maybe there was something interesting. I don't know.
Oh, Cammy, wow, your grandmother and her family, they were able to hide Jews in their home
from the Holocaust when she was about five.
