Countries and being split into two. Name a more iconic duo. And whilst Germany,
Ireland and Korea are the most often discussed, another country with such a divide is Cyprus,
which since the 1970s has been divided into two parts, or three if you count those that still
belong to Britain. In the south sits the Republic of Cyprus recognized by everyone,
and in the north lies the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is recognized only by Turkey,
and this state of affairs raises an obvious question. What caused this to happen? Why is Cyprus
divided? So, before Cyprus was split, it was a British colony which they had acquired from the
Ottomans in 1878, and many of those living there were Greek Cypriots, most of whom wish to
unify with Greeks in a process known as a Gnosis. However, that's not how Empire works,
and the British opted to ignore them because Cyprus's position was far too valuable to them.
Many decades later, like most British colonies in the wake of the Second World War, Cyprus and its
people pushed for independence. In the mid-1950s, Greek Cypriots began an armed campaign which
wanted to end British rule there and unify the island of Greece. Of course, the British were happy
to accept these demands and just kidding, they teamed up with the Turkish Cypriots to fight
back and in the end they were giving Cyprus its independence. And Britain preferred an
independent Cyprus that wasn't a part of Greece since it wanted military bases there as a
a forward base for the Middle East. Cyprus as a small new nation could be coerced into
agreeing to this in return for the end of British rule, whereas Greece was a much larger
established- It's actually bad for them to be independent, but like they made it. Do
it you pocket pussy. Do it.
Country that would be able to resist. After the British had left the island, well mostly
tensions rose between the Greek and Turkish population there. One of the conditions of
Cypriot independence was that the Turkish minority's rights would be respected. And also
So it was agreed that no one would push for a union with either Greece or Turkey nor
try to partition the island.
And Greece, Turkey and Britain all agreed to uphold this status.
Despite the agreement, many Greek Cypriots including President Makarios felt that the
Turkish were over-represented and so wanted that changed.
Shockingly, the Turkish Cypriots didn't want this and so, a decade of impasse.
In 1974, feeling that Makarios wasn't doing enough, a group of the Nazis backing
Cypriots aided by the dictatorship in Greece launched a coup.
Macarius fled and Nicos Samson was placed in charge and made it clear that he was going
to unify Cyprus with Greece.
And now the Turkish government was concerned for the welfare of Turkish Cypriots who were
subject to growing violence and so ours Britain is helping with the theme.
And the British said no, and for this they had two reasons.
The first was that they were too busy being poor, and the second was that those in
government above all else wanted to keep their military bases, and thus by not picking
aside it was hoped that they could leverage the fact that they didn't oppose the
eventual winners to keep their territory on Cyprus.
As a result, Turkey opted to proceed alone.
Turkish troops landed here and they very quickly and eagerly pushed Greek Cypriot forces back
across the island.
This was condemned by the United States, who didn't want to NATO members going to war
and breaking the alliance, but generally most countries were sympathetic to the Turkish.
All of this embarrassed the military government in Greece and fears overall out war led to
the collapse of the regime there.
Whilst the Greeks were busy becoming a democracy again, the Turkish opted to push
even further across Cyprus.
At this point the rest of the world turned against Turkey.

and you can easily scrape a ton of information with very little.
So this video is acting as a PSA for two things.
One, stop posting your boarding passes on-

don't really know what they're doing when they're posting and to show you guys
how easy it is I came across this oscent challenge that says a passenger
posted a photo of their flight ticket online. The ticket is heavily pixelated
but key details remain partially recoverable. Your task is to identify
the passengers first and last name, their seat number, and the arrival
Airport code is this dogs training see like dogs mastering is this what this is like this is like becoming like the ultimate
Duxa so you can fucking post on fucking 4chan all information can be deduced through a mothful open source
All right, so this is the boarding pass that we're working with and immediately looking at this you think oh everything is heavily pixelated
And there's no way that there's enough. Yeah, I'm gonna look at that. I mean what are we doing with this?
But I guess information from the sport
I mean, I don't know what the fuck?

LAX, so LA, American Airlines.

And you can actually get all the information
from this single barcode right here.
Every airline uses a PDF 417 barcode.

Every single line here holds information inside of it.
And it's been adapted by every airline internationally
because it's super compact and holds a lot of data.
And each line here holds information
that is actually able to be decoded.
And we've all seen people upload a photo online
with their boarding pass with the barcode in it
without really understanding the amount of information
that this barcode holds.
Man, that's fucking cool, right, by the way.
Like that technology, that is fucking cool.
Like a picture is got information like you know you look at something and I mean it's
like I guess it's like text but just you know file more efficient because there's different
categories and everything.
So our task is to identify the passengers first and last name, seat number, and gear
and gear.
And so basically online there is PDF 4 and 7 barcode decoders.
Oh my god.
This is just one example and there's dozens of websites like this online, this example
PDF 4 and 7 is the barcode that we're using and you can just upload the barcode
and then it gives you a 80 digit BPCP code that you can then use to decode to get all
of this information.
But most of these websites, you can't just upload the boring pass as a whole.
You have to tweak it a little bit because, well, it wouldn't recognize the barcode on
this image.
So then what I did was I uploaded it into Photoshop, cropped it down into just barcode.
I like to horizontally make it straight and then mess with the levels a bit so the
black shows up a little bit more.
And then I go into image adjustments and I'm like,
can it get black and white?
And most of these websites don't automatically read
the bar code that easily.
So you actually do have to tweak your ground with it a lot.
And since when I tried solving this OSINT challenge,
these were the six that I ended up using
and only one of them ended up working.
To eventually where I uploaded it to this website,
it scanned it, it decoded it,
and it gave us this 80-digit BPCP code.
I mean, look at this and we think,
what am I looking at?
I'll tell you exactly what we're looking at.
Alright, so PDF-417 is the barcode type.
M1 here means it was a direct flight.
It then reveals his full name, is his last name,
Michael is his first name.
Right here shows his booking reference number, O-N-K-M-I-F.
He left from LAX and is going to PVG,
which is Shanghai, on American Airlines, on flight AA-183.
On the 160th date of the year, which was June 9th,
which was also confirmed on the ticket,
F for a hair show, see the Sydney.
Damn.
Sydney in seat 3D.
And he was the 120th person to check in.
We got all of that information from a single bar code.
And I guarantee a lot of people watching this
knew this already.
But I also guarantee a lot of people didn't.
And with all this information in the hands
of the wrong person, and depending on the airline,
this is enough information to log in and learn
the mobile phone number, change the flight completely,
adjust your meal, adjust your seat,
or even cancel the flight.
People are doing that, right?
