story and after checking every benchmark and pro setup i could find the answer is pretty
clear but it is not the same answer for every game today i will show you which games it
matters in which games it doesn't the one setting that most people get backwards
and exactly what to use in your setup.
Starting with the games that already made a choice for you.
Not for years the logic was simple.
Fullscreen means your GPU sends frames straight to your monitor.
No middleman.
Borderless means Windows sits in between and adds delay.
That was through an older system.
So what actually changed?
Windows has a system for how your game delivers frames.
Called Flip Model Presentation.
When your game runs borderless and covers the fullscreen,
Windows can-

Deliver frames directly. Now this has existed since Windows 10, but Windows 11 made it dramatically more consistent.
And there is one specific setting, optimizations for windowed games.
Now when it works correctly, borderless gets the same direct path fullscreen always had.
Same speed, same latency, but just with smooth alt-tubbing mode.
I hope you verify this yourself with a free tool from Intel called Press-and-Mode.
Launch your game, check the Press-and-Mode column.
If it says independent flip, your borderless is running at full screen speed.
If it says composed flip, Windows is adding...

And that one check tells you more than any FPS benchmark ever will now all of this depends on what graphics API your game is running
CS2 and Valorant run on DX11. For those games the choice still matters, but if a game runs
on DX12 there is no exclusive full screen. Microsoft's own DirectX documentation states this.
The full screen button exists in the menu, but behind the scenes the game runs borderless
with independent... I've seen that. So I've been attributing that to games being good.
So you're telling me there's not even the companies that are good, they're just using
the new DirectX. Because I noticed that as well. I was like, wait, this one says full screen,
That was the full screen boilers, but the son's full screen boilers are ready, so why would I change it?
So I don't change it. So it's just DX12.
No matter what you pick. Now this is game specific though. Apex Legends dropped DX11 completely in March 2025.
For DX12, the full skin setting is cosmetic basically. Now Fortnite gives you the option between DX11 and DX12.
So pick DX12 and the full skin button means nothing. Pick DX11 and you are back to the same rules as CS2.
So the answer is not about the game. It is about which API that game is actually in.
It keeps borderless the same frame delivery path as fullscreen, why do pro still refuse
to use it?
Now the FPS gap is part of it, in GPU limited games 2-5% drops, but in CPU bound competitive
games like CS2 or Fortnite, on the X11 the gap reaches 9-11%.
That matters, but FPS is still not the main reason.
When you run borderless, there is a system built into Windows called Desktop Window
Manager.
It is the layer that draws everything on your desktop.
Your taskbar, your browser, your wallpaper.
When you run borderless, your game is just another way to...

When you play borderless, your input passes through
an extra layer of the windows input stack
before it is a game engine.
And if you play on a 4x3 stretch resolution,
Windows applies scaling differently
in borderless than in full screen,
which is why your sensitivity can feel completely off.
And a lot of players have been reported
needing to fully recalibrate their sensitivity,
a minor tweak that basically a full reset of muscle memory now in full screen that
extra layer does not let's carry a that's probably thinking like oh yeah go to a new
setup whatever it is play the game nah bro nah you gotta have the exact DPI locked in
bro dude that one sitting in windows like a massive celebration would have
cooked so many people the game talks directly to your input what you said
is what you get and then there is also the CS2 paradox we now have some
weird matchmarks that show more. You know you had cool when you got the gaming sleeve
glove on, okay? FPS in borderless compared to fullscreen on some common setups. But
players consistently report that input still feels worse despite the higher FPS.
This is because FPS and latency are two different measurements. Your FPS counter
can go up while your input delay stays the same or gets worse. If a guide only
compares FPS that guide is giving you half the picture. This is why every
pro sticks with fullscreen, not for FPS for the predictor. But take care of that now.
Now where you do not control the Windows version or the driver build, Fullscreen isolates your game from everything the operating system might do to your input.
And there is also the multi-monitor problem, borderless with a 240Hz main monitor and a 60Hz second monitor.

Fullscreen of course avoids that completely.
But here is where it gets complicated.
There is a Windows settings that most optimization guides have been telling you to chase since
2018.
Now if you ever looked on how to optimize Windows for gaming you saw the whole fight.
Right click your game, go to compatibility, check disable fullscreen optimizations.
Every guide basically says this.
Fullscreen optimization is the thing that connects your old game to the modern fast
path we talked about, independent flip.
It is not slowing you down, it is the thing that speeds you up.
When you disable it you are telling Windows to use the old way instant.
And the old way is not faster anymore.
it is just older. You also lose some extra features like battery freshly syncing with borderless,
you basically give off stuff and you get nothing back. For CS2 Valorant and most modern games,
leave it on. If you have a really old game that-

Alright, I ain't should get- okay, new- I was gonna say, why would I fuck with what I need to take that, bro?
I'm a number pro gamer, I don't take that.
Statters with it on, try turning it off, but for anything made in the last few years do not touch it.
Now here are the other settings that actually matter. Optimizations for window games.
Find these in settings, display graphics and turn it on. This is what makes Borderless actually fast
for older games. If this is off and you play Borderless on the S11 game, Windows is probably
adding delay for no reason. Next is hardware accelerated GPU scheduling. Turn this on.
Let your GPU handle more of the working set of your CPU. Good for games like CS2 where
your CPU is the bottleneck. If you use also OBS and it starts dropping frames, turn this off and see
if that fixes it. Next you have game mode which I would recommend to turn it on. It has windows to
give your game priority no downside. Next you have memory integrated, this is in the window security
under core isolation. It is a security feature that constantly checks your system in the background.
Turning it off gives you around 4-5% more FPS in competitive games. Now if this PC is only
for gaming, turn it off. If you also do work and have banking on it, just leave it on.
For NVIDIA if your game has a reflex option in the setting, turn it on.
That is the best thing you can do for input delay on NVIDIA.
If the game does not have reflex, go to NVIDIA control panel and set low latency mode to on
and power management to prefer maximum performance.
Of course we can also talk about process less, but that is just way too long for this
video.
For AMD, turn on radio 90, same thing, different name.
And after all of this, open press and mode and check.
If it says independent flip, you have to check if it says cry hard, run, and you
need to check your settings.
And on the verdict.
Virtual version, CSTOR Valorant, Fullscreen.
These games run on DX11 and the input difference is real.
Right on tech lead, set a borderless invalorant at nearly 10 milliseconds of extra delay.
For comparison, going from low to ultra graphics, adds only 1.3 milliseconds.
If you play 4x3 stretch resolution in any game, go fullscreen.
Borderless handles the stretching differently and your sensitivity will feel wrong.
You will waste weeks trying to pick something that was never broke, it was just the wrong
display mode.
If you have two monitors with different refresh rates, again full screen.
Or make your monitors match, a 240Hz screen next to a 60Hz in borderless mode can drag
your game down to 60Hz when anything moves on the second monitor.
If you stream or use a capture card, borderless.
Full screen causes black screen and freezes when you alt-top with a capture card.
Like yeah, yeah, dude, yeah.
I think you would notice that if you were a streamer, bro, like the whole thing

This is the only way that works.
Any game on DX 12 does not matter.
