But what is the difference and why does it matter?
It really comes down to the big three units of measure.
We have staple length, micronair, and grams protects.
Staple length matters because the way you create yarn
is through twist and friction.
The longer the fibers, the less hairy ends that you'll have
and the smoother and more durable yarn.
Micronair measures fiber fineness and maturity.
If staple length is how long, micronair is how thick.
For standard cotton, the sweet spot is 3.7 to 4.2.
Strength is the final unit of measure.
Measure it in grams per text.
The average for upland cotton is around 27 grams per text,
making it quite fragile.
True high-grade ELS cotton can hip upwards
of 40 grams per text or higher,
making it almost 50% stronger.

So today I'm going to catch you up on this amazing new technology, how it works, how
you can use it, and where I think this is headed.

So a few years ago I made a video about what I thought was the future of 3D capture.
It was about a brand-new technology called neural radiance fields or nerfs for short
Because for the first time ever it was possible to capture a 3d scene that looked photo real out of the box
Without the tedious levels of work it used to require and that was a big deal. In fact, I even got
a Nerf commercial with luka Donchich
Yes that nerf and yes that luka the basketball superstar
By using nerfs, I could combine photorealistic capture with digital animation to create something I couldn't achieve using only one or the other.
Which is amazing! I was convinced this was the future! But alas, they were too slow to process. They couldn't be edited.
They were simply too hard to use and so the industry did not adopt them.
Less than a year after my original video came out, nerfs were abandoned because they had been replaced.
With something better enter Gaussian splats, and yes, it's pronounced in Gaussian

But since then I feel like I'm falling behind.
On a fundamental level, there's not really much difference between squats,
nerves, and traditional photo stands because they're each a form of 3D capture.
Let's say you wanted to scan this apple here.
You start by capturing a series of overlapping photos of the apples from as many different
viewpoints as you can get. Then you need to figure out where those pictures were taken in 3D
space. And this is all a process called structure from motion. At the same time that it's solving
the camera positions, it's also solving which pixels are the same between different images,
and then it triangulates where they are too. This creates a cloud of floating pixels that
roughly represents the layout of your scene. Now with photo scanning you would actually
turn this point cloud into a 3D model. The three points create a plane, connect to planes,
give you a mesh, project the photos onto that mesh to get a textured 3D model.

Congrats, you've now replicated an object. However, it doesn't look real out of the box.
Notice how the apple is the same shade of red no matter what angle I view it from.
That's not how light works.
In reality, light is view dependent.
It depends on your view.
We should be seeing a slightly different shade of red depending on where we're viewing
it from.
Because you're not actually seeing the apple, you're seeing the light that has bounced off
of the apple.
Like a game of billiards, the angle of that light really does matter.
Now if I manually clean up the mesh, set up the shaders and light it properly, I can then
simulate the behavior of light.
That's called rendering, but what if I didn't have to simulate the light?
And that is where radiance fields come in.
Instead of capturing the shape of an object, it's actually capturing the radiance, or how
much light is traveling in a certain direction at a specific point, and that could be very
different depending on which direction and which point you're looking at.
In other words, radiance fields solve the view dependency problem, and it's what makes
them so realistic.
Now, nerfs and Gaussian splats are both radiance fields, so they're actually pretty similar
and what they do, but how they do it is extremely different.
Nurses use a neural network to learn the radiance of the scene.
Hence, neural radiance field.
It's basically an extremely complicated math function.
You tell it which viewpoint you want to see,
and it'll crunch some numbers, and then render out that viewpoint.
It is not a 3D scene.
It's a formula.
That's an important distinction because that's why it's so slow.
Gaussian spots, on the other hand, actually do exist in 3D space.
They're actually way closer to a point cloud,
Something that our computers are very good at processing except these points are fancy. They are the fanciest of points
Let's get into it because honestly, this is my favorite part because this is where the true genius of Gaussian splats comes in
Okay, this is a very real 3d scene, but look at this. It's rendering in real time in a browser
How is it doing this?
At each point stores data
Based on like their reference point from what you want to look at the given pixel
If you zoom in far enough, you'll actually see that the scene is made of a bunch of fuzzy blobs
These blobs are called Gaussian and because they're fuzzy they smoothly overlap each other
So all like splattering paint everywhere until everything is covered hence Gaussian splat
Now a Gaussian actually has some shape to it so they could be spherical
They could be long and spiky or flat like a pancake. They can also be transparent
Which means that they're really good at representing clear objects like glass or you know windows
They can also be really tiny or really huge depending on if they're trying to be a detailed object or a large smooth surface
I spark you could see millions of individual Gaussian each story information about their position rotation shape opacity and perhaps most importantly
View dependent color. Yeah, that's what I was thinking about
That's a different color depending on which direction you're looking at. There it is

That's what I've been suggesting when I was growing up.

Just the amount of color is pulled based on the direction. It's a million how do we capture it?
Okay, he's about to get onto it a way to represent a huge range of colors with just a small set of
Gaussian splats so efficient. It's mathematical minimalism, baby
Whoo! Combine that with transparency and shape and suddenly this fancy point cloud starts doing a really good job of representing reality
It's not like how a painting is simply a collection of brushstrokes that creates the illusion of an image
We just go around and we just fucking
Like as it was this right so we have to go around taking million photos of an environment and then we get yeah
But still the footage of the person
and moving and you have to have a 3D camera array.
There's no like magic tech there.
Gauze in the Spot is just a collection of fuzzy blobs
that creates the illusion of photorealism.

So best practices for doing a scan
is you wanna have the crispest images possible.
Crispus, Merry Christmas.
Any amount of blur is your worst enemy.
So that means locking your shutter speed
to as high as you can get away with.
One over 500, ideally one over 1,000.
You don't want any fluctuations in the lighting either.
So that means locking your white balance,
locking your ISO, locking your tint,
perhaps even locking your focus.
I'm using the Blackmagic Cinema app.
I'm filming at 60 FPS to reduce rolling shutter,
but I'm also in time lapse mode.
So it's actually saving every 10 frames.
It's weird.
It doesn't matter.
It's not a video, it's a data set.
It's a bunch of images.
Yeah, I guess you just do that.
