This is my 6th week at Boston Dynamics.
And the fridge was my first project.
I was told this was a year-end project.
We were trying to target and then it became a 2-week task.
The new generation of Atlas, it's a very exciting problem.
When we started working on its design, we set out to build a robot that was designed for low cost, ease of manufacturing, reliability, and simplicity.
Really, it's a robot for which we've tried to reduce the complexity as much as possible.
One of the cool things is that we've been able to, despite that simplification, maintain many of the things that make Boston Dynamics robots fun to work with.
It's a robot that it is very strong.
It is basic, right?
It's a robot that it is very agile and fast, and it's very easy to control.
You look at it, it's just a bunch of hinges, right?
We're very successful.

We basically wanted to jump in the deep end
The empty fridge is 50 pounds and that is mostly what we shot with in the wild. 50 pounds
are still at 50 pounds divided by 2.2

I don't know of any other humanoid robot that has moved a big heavy object like a fridge
So the fridge experiment was really cool and something I've kind of always been wanting to do
Which is basically instead of just grabbing things like with your hand and grasping it and kind of moving it like this
it was really using the whole body and really like
Leveraging like, you know straight arms
Stuff a thing and like really put your whole body into it was kind of the idea
And I've always wanted to do that with the robot, you know a couple of things have come together recently
We have a really capable new robot that could actually do it and we have a lot of really cool new
Tools on the team that we're utilizing to program it to do these kinds of behaviors
But that's not actually programmed though, right like like yeah
It's got a goal of moving this object and everything and like and they probably got like points where it grabs and shit
but it's like some sort of emergent intelligence where each joint has like certain like
it's like a drone where this right they have like a little gyro where one side starts dipping so it
speeds up that fan and then that one starts going down so it slows down this one and it creates this
really really stable thing which just hovers there kind of thing right so it like spreads the load
dynamically in this like kind of emergent smart way right which is so fucking cool I love systems
where you have like a bunch of basic components and they have a bunch of basic rules and you plug
them all together and there's something magic starts happening and it mostly picks up a
fr... like he picks up a fr... fridge. Which is... I just love that, it's awesome. Those are merchant
properties. Speaking as a systems designer and like, like myself. I've been here at Optimus for 15 years
and I've been a leader on the controls team for about that long and we've gone through many
cycles and many, you know, hivits. And I think this one, where we are right now is probably the most exciting.
In the six weeks, I've noticed that it's fairly easy for us to test things. There's the pipeline,
there's a rigorous pipeline that's been established, and there's a lot of people working behind the scenes.
The whole system in itself is a packaged system for us to test new policies on. So I could be
Training a policy today and tomorrow. I have a big policy and in within like an hour
My policies on the robot. I'm testing. I'm collecting data. I'm seeing what's happening
So that whole pipeline seamless
We kind of have very close sim to real gap
We're just a robot and that that's been very fun to focus on
Oh, that was smooth as fuck what it would look like for the robot to move the fridge
Then in simulation for millions of hours. We let the robot practice moving the fridge in the exact same way
We encouraged it to move the fridge like we told it to not drop the fridge and all those sorts of things and then
Once you get sort of the reward tuning right the physics correct for the hand dragging along the fridge
And you run it on the hardware. It does
perfectly we've not seen the limits of what Atlas can do we are still pushing
the limits in terms of the sort of big heavy object that Atlas can pick up we're
always gonna keep pushing it like a champ dude what's crazy is when they
Start seven these fucking things and put them into these environments and let them do it millions and millions of times
It's gonna come with like super weird ways of doing shit
And it's gonna start moving in like alien fashions. It's gonna look weird as fuck like this shit here
You ain't even gonna tell you consider like oh, I'm gonna rotate my torso around because I can do that
You know when you drop some fridges you like it's seen the limit
They're gonna send them on weird shit, bro
And it's gonna like not look like it makes sense, but it's actually gonna be more economic and more efficient

Today I want to give some advice to the game developers in my audience.
Don't survey your players to help you decide your game's design direction.
Now, that probably sounds strange because asking your community how to improve your
game seems completely reasonable.
And to be clear, I'm not saying you shouldn't listen to your players.
Of course you should. You should solicit-
The players are retarded.
The feedback about specific topics, watch how people play, pay attention to complaints, and take reported problems seriously.
But there's a big difference between listening to feedback and asking players to help you decide what your vision for the game should be.
In this video, I want to talk through four reasons why surveying players can be dangerous.
The first problem is that they think they know what they want but they don't know what they want.
want that's what the issue is you can like when they complain about some
shit you like but why are they complaining about things like they
always think of band aid make it easier make it faster delete that part
that's what I think they don't try and solve the actual problem they try to
some band-aid fix and what you end up is with D4 bro that's what you know what
makes you look like you just don't know what you're doing as the game's
developer you should have a clear vision of where the game is heading and if you
don't you should fix that while at least projecting the impression that you
have one. When you ask players to choose between possible game features in a survey, it can
make it seem like you just don't have that vision. It gives the impression that you're
unsure about what matters, or that you don't understand your own game well enough to assess
what's important. Now, sometimes your team does have a plan, but someone elsewhere in
the company or at your publisher decides to be really helpful and to do some market research
for you via a survey. But if that survey leaks, players aren't going to know who wrote the
questions. They'll assume the questions reflect what the dev team is seriously considering
And if the questions seem out of touch, then your team seems out of touch
Yeah, the second problem with surveys is they create expectations
The moment you put an idea in front of your players and ask them for way in on it
You imply that it's on the table you imply that it might do you want to be able to skip the campaign or not?
Imagine if they did that imagine what would happen if they did a vote and
You said like hey, do you want to have to skip the campaign?
And then in the second they hear that they're like

Bending together and pushing for an idea on their own is normal feedback
But if you asked about it first, then not following through will feel like a broken promise
They'll feel ignored and misled. Yep
Even worse some players may answer based on what benefits them personally rather than what's best for the game overall
They may vote for whatever helps that build that play style or that's true
Even if that would damage the long-term health of the game one bro. This is the case for streaming by the way

$10 now or you want $100 five days from now or a seven days from now

Like straight facts with surveys. They often ask players to choose solutions
I get cancer to discover is the problem as any statistician can tell you it's actually extremely hard to design a good survey
Wording affects outcomes, answer choices affect outcomes, the kind of people who respond
affect the outcomes.
The players who fill out the surveys may skew towards the most engaged, upset, or opinionated
players, missing out the many people who really just don't feel strongly enough to fill out
the survey on that given day.
And this skews the results also.
Your survey tells you that 50% of players reach maximum level in your game, but your
own database tells you it's less than 1%.
Your survey gives you a pretty spreadsheet of data that looks clean and insightful, but
it may tell you far less than your own game data, direct player observation and common
sense already can.
The fourth problem is that bad survey results can push you into worse decisions. This is
the part that worries me the most. If the sample is biased, the answers are self-interested,
the questions are focused on solutions instead of problems, and if you've already started
giving up on the perception of having a strong vision, then the survey not only fails to
help you, but may actively pull you in the wrong direction. You start optimizing for the
the loudest players instead of the whole community.

I'm not trying to say don't listen to players, obviously you should, but there's real danger
in asking players to tell you how to change your game.
So how should you get feedback from players instead?
Well, start with finding out about the game's problems, not the proposed fixes.
Watch people play, read what frustrates them, ask targeted questions about specific pain
points.
Your players are excellent at telling you when something feels bad, confusing, unfair or
unrewarding.
What they are not responsible for is balancing the whole game or protecting its long-term
health.
That part is your job.
Don't ask players to choose your direction for you.
Ask them whether they're having the experience that you intended.
Because when you ask players how to improve the game's design in broad, solution-seeking surveys,
you risk looking like you lack vision, you create expectations, you gather distorted information,
and you can end up making worse decisions for the game as a result.
This is a difference between a good dev and a bad dev, by the way.
Like, good devs have a vision, they have principles, they will never break,
and they will be able to use feedback that is good
to then action and making a better and then be like, yeah, that's retarded feedback.

As you seem to be a keen slayer of demons, Alaph would like to recruit you to the order
and asks that you travel to their monastery to the south.
On the way there you'll start to encounter more breaches and will notice one of the first
changes to the breach mechanic.
You still have to kill monsters as fast as you can to keep the breach open, but now you
can visibly see how much time you have left to keep it open and how each kill extends
its duration.

A gigantic area has fallen to the scourge, and the Keepers are unable to get inside.
Inside the monastery is the Genesis Tree, a powerful asset to the war effort stolen from the enemy and gifted to the Keepers by the dreamer himself.
Using the tree, Aelith could create a breech stone and penetrate the hive-borne foothold,
but without hive blood, the tree has withered.
To get hive blood, you will need to take advantage of another new mechanic of breech.
If you can keep the otherworldly portal open for long enough, the breech will stabilize and will enter a new phase.
The hive-borne will send their toughest miscreations to defeat you, and the breech will not close until you can annihilate them,
dropping hive blood that you can use to restore the Genesis tree.
In some cases you may even attract one of the deadliest foes the Hiveborn can offer.

When you first open the Genesis tree, you will notice these holes into which you can place your worm gifts.
Each worm gift can be used to create a different type of jewellery.

So you got jewelry and currency.
Two weekly, and they got specific minion shit in there and some castle shit, but like, yeah, it's still gonna be, I'm still doing it, regardless.

Fuck, you just get sick rings and sick necklaces, who cares? Like, you know, that's still a good item.
And must be fertilized with hive blood.
And belt.

So for example, you can place this amulet worm gift into the tree and it will give birth
to a random rare amulet.
But the Genesis tree is capable of much more.
As you continue to feed the tree, its branches will regenerate and allow you more and more
control over what kind of items it will birth.
So for example, this branch of the tree will allow you to control which base types of amulets
can be birthed.
As you go deeper, it will even allow you to create new base types that you can't get anywhere else.
Pretty damn specific in this hardline as to what you block.
Like, I mean, it's pretty hardcore.
I wonder what kind of level of determinism you can get to for like, the items that it outputs.
You can't, it's only blocking one out of a few, so you just not like, you can get, maybe there's some base types
you can just corner it where it just keeps pouring the same shit out there, open over and over again.

socket in it. To the left and right are branches that will let you control which mods the amulet

The right hand branch of the ring tree adds an entire new set of cast of mods to rings.

That's pretty nice. 17% seal gain frequency, that's quite significant.
And unlock an entire new set of mods for minion characters.
This stuff is actually pretty important because casters and minion builds didn't have as many
slots with interesting item crafting compared to attack builds. The Genesis tree narrows
that gap. There are also trees for belts and currency. I won't go over them too much here,
but there are all sorts of goodies in these too. Like being able to create new catalysts
for jewels.

Or a belt that gives lightning damage.
Whoa!
Once you've done enough breach encounters, you may finally get a Wormgift Capell of
birthing a breech stone. And you can then use it on the hive one incursion. Once used,
the true extent of the breech demon's foothold becomes clear. They have not only transformed
the land, but constructed huge sky hives as well.
I do love how the breech stone is kinda like this thing you put it on the map which unlocks
this area which is like these special maps it's it is kind of cool I mean I
like it I like it. When you enter the outskirts of their realm you will discover
breach hives using the path. Actually path towards the fortresses and you path
towards the things you know you go in there and if you want to you can if you
don't you know it's it's pretty nice. The keepers of the flame these other
worldly structures can be burned away when walking through them. The whole sense of
place. But for each one destroyed more of the Hive one will attack when you attempt
to purge the hive.
Like they are definitely coming closer to the vision of what the map is because this
period of that infinite hellish shit is kind of like a version like one or version of whatever
the fuck 0.1 whatever the fuck the initial it's sloppy as fuck just sloppy toppy dog
shit trash and now the vision and I'm starting to see it right now I'm yet to get in there
and you know actually experience it so you know but I like what they're doing and I can see the idea
they've got there having fixed locations zones that have stuff you have like areas you can't get
in unless you have a breach zone you get then you add getting access to that particular area which
is breach specialized I like the idea now is it going to feel good we're going to find out in seven
days these encounters are particularly rewarding for womb gifts so you'll want to do as many of
of these as you can. But your real goal are the sky hives deeper into the domain. These
twisted creations are securing the demons entry into our world.
This game plays crazy. That game plays crazy.
Besides the very center are the Breach Lords, Tool and Ash, and you'll need to defeat them
if you want to get rid of the foothold once and for all. Now, once you've completed the
questline version, there is still more to do. You will find other Breach Domains on the
the Atlas randomly in your travels. For each one you will need to find a breach stone,
destroy the sky hives, and defeat the breach lords. And doing these encounters is what
will give you access to fight Zest, the existing breach pinnacle boss which you can access
by communing with the dreamer himself. Show the finger thing, show the finger thing.
While completing the questline for breach, you will also be gaining points for the breach
Atlas tree, and there are a lot of cool new options here.
This node will cause Breach Hives to spawn outside of the Hiveborn domains on the Atlas.
And this one will give Aelith additional abilities that you can use while attacking a Hive.
Like this one, which causes all Hiveborn in the next wave to be magic, drastically increasing
the difficulty in exchange for way more items.
There are also nodes that allow you to control your rewards, like this one which adds a set
new lineage supports to the Marshal of Zest. Or this one, which lets you control which
worm gifts you will get. There's also some nodes that affect the Genesis Tree, like this
one which will cause Zest to drop his head, which when returned to the Genesis Tree will
grow a grasswing orchid on the side of it. You'll have to experiment to find out what
this thing is good for. Putting rings on its fingers seems to make it happy.
It's the best thing that is out of all the things that is on that's like the number one breach upgrade
