The wait is finally over. After years of speculation and leaks, this is Valve's brand new headset.
And over the past few weeks, I've gotten the chance to put around a hundred hours into this thing.
And I think Valve has made something very, very weird.
Because on one hand, this is the best wireless PCVR headset ever made. Full stop.
But it also comes with some pretty questionable trade-offs and a painful price.
So just to start off, this is-

Well, not a full review. You get 100 hours and you're a V-I guy. You can't make a full
review after 100 hours on the launch day with the embargoes lifted.
That being said, let's just get right into it. At launch, the frame comes in two skews.
You've got the 256GB version at 1059 USD and the 1TB unit at 1299. But that's only
including the base package, as in the box you get the headset, two controllers, a USB-C
cable, a pretty nice valve microfiber, and this very exciting new wireless dongle.
What's not included is a power supply or the accessory kit that we'll talk about in
a bit.
Both come at an additional cost on top of whatever you spend on the frame, at $29 for the
power supply and $59 for the ergonomics kit.
a passable as a USB-C charger that goes over how it was or something right? You know what she need?

just disable like locomotion if you just disable your legs and shit and just
go into the outworld full matrix style people are gonna be like super into

include a power brick. But I think in a similar situation to the steam machine, Valve is just

But price aside, I think the best place to start with this video is with a little
tour of the frame. Gone is the laser-based lighthouse tracking found on Valve's previous headset,
as the frame relies on camera-based slam tracking using four monochromatic cameras,
two on the front and two on the sides that also provide grayscale pass-through of
unusable quality. On one side of the head...

In the set you have a power and action button, and on the other side you have two volume buttons,
along with vents for active cooling. On the bottom of the headset are two microphones,
And you can hear right now what they sound like, the microphones are okay, while on the

The headset you have a manual IPD adjustment wheel that accommodates between 60 and
70 millimeters. With an IPD lock behind the face gasket, which I found to be pretty
clever. Here you'll also find the mic.

It's pretty rare to have expandable storage on a VR headset.
So it's more than welcomed, especially considering the premium for the more
expensive one terabyte version and something else that's super interesting is
that after engaging these three locks, you can actually remove the entire
headstrap to reveal just the Compute Unit. With Valve officially stating they do plan on launching
additional headstraps in the future. Down the list of interesting things on this headset is this
proprietary port that is basically an entire PCIe Gen 4 slot that has been and will be used for
all sorts of things, like this camera module that I have here that gives you full RGB binocular
passthrough or potentially in the future even a face tracker add-on. And moving to the headstrap,
you've got the battery module on the back, a simple elastic band, and headstrap audio that
Sounds okay. It's nowhere near the index is BMR drivers, but now that the tour is over. Let's talk about what it's actually like
How could it be a downgrade of intake and how are they downgrading my quality and downgrading?

This is because they have to through walls, but that doesn't make sense. I guess it's just better

stack. As the first thing you'll notice when you put on this headset are these
big, beautiful, custom valve-made pancake lenses. They've got a nice big
i-box and a significantly larger sweet spot than the index. I don't really
have any complaints as there's almost no noticeable internal reflections even
in high contrast environments. And to be honest, these great lenses really
carry the displays, which brings us to the other part of the OpticStack, probably the most
controversial part of the Steamframe, these 2160x2160 LCD panels. And look, I'm just gonna say it,
the panels on the Steamframe are admittedly a little disappointing, as we've basically been at
this 2K per eye resolution for the past three years or so, and if you've ever used a Quest
3 or Pico 4, you're gonna get more or less the same visual experience. And that's not to
to say these displays are bad in any way. They're fast, low-persistence and bright, capable
of up to 144Hz refresh rate, but they're also just nothing new. Contrast ratios are going
to be what you expect from an LCD panel, black will be dark gray, and I think this was just
clearly a compromise by Valve in a few ways. On one side, 2K per eye does keep the render
resolution relatively low, which is probably necessary for performance, but really,
I think these panels were picked because of the cost. As much as I would have

If you're coming from a Quest III or Bigscreen Beyond, however, it's gonna be good enough.
And honestly, beyond the contrast ratio of LCD versus micro OLED,
I find myself just wanting a few more pixels of resolution more than anything,
especially when in a desktop environment.
But that's something that we'll talk about a bit later.
And I think Shag's a good time to mention that inside the Optic Stack are two additional cameras that are used for eye-tracking,
which is a massive part of this headset, but again, we'll talk about that part a bit later.
Moving on to the controllers, because even though the visual experience isn't anything new,
the Frames controllers are ditching the VR industry standard of the symmetrical controller layout
or the standard Xbox style layout with a full D-pad, two triggers, and full-size thumbsticks, finally.
However, I do want to preface this entire segment by saying, right out of the box,
I actually wasn't a huge fan of the Frames controllers,
and I have a feeling that this will be a common point that people talk about when they start receiving their headsets,
As not only are they a little chunky,
the plastic just feels a little cheap and no shade intended.
But in a lot of ways, they kind of remind me
of Pimax's controllers,
and that's not exactly a compliment to Pimax.
But once I put on the accessory packs handstrap
and learn how to hold them in a way
that wasn't uncomfortable, they did grow on me.
In fact, they grow on me so much
that I can't really see myself
going back to other VR controllers.
It's not that they're more comfortable,
it's just that they do so much more,
like you literally just have more buttons.
On top of that, the frame has, without a doubt, the best thumbsticks ever put on a VR controller.
Using the same exact TMR6 found on the new Steam controller.
And good news if you're a fan of the finger tracking found on the knuckles, you're not gonna miss anything here.
As finger tracking is fully supported, and I actually found it to be more reliable than on the knuckles.
I don't wanna do the fucking freak-ass VTuber, bro.

Now, regarding tracking quality, I honestly don't really have much to say about it,
as the tracking's just been fantastic.
The headset's camera layout allows you
to have a pretty large range of motion.
Another thing regarding the controllers
that really pleasantly surprised me
is that you can actually use the frame
in total and complete darkness.
Not a single life's required.
In fact, the IR illuminators in the headset
legit give you like real night vision through pass through.

On controllers is the battery life.

I have used the frame a ridiculous amount and I've replaced the double a battery once and as much hate as double a batteries
I might get I personally think just swapping a battery beats having to charge something right when you're in the middle of a
long play session, which is actually the perfect segway to our next section.
What is it like actually gaming with the frame?
And I think the best way to do this is to break this up into two segments,
streamed gaming and standalone gaming.
And I think I can confidently say after trying tons of headsets over the
years, esteem frame is hands down the best wireless PC VR headset on the
market. If you're the kind of person that's just looking for a wireless PC
headset without all the meta fluff, I'll save you some time. This is
it. I mean, just check this out.
This is the entire process of getting into SteamVR. That's it.
And the actual VR experience is fantastic.
If you've ever used SteamLink with a Quest before, it's basically that.
But significantly improved, with Valve solving two major problems with wireless streaming
using the brand new 6GHz Wi-Fi streaming dock.

frame just provides a really good connection while dedicating streaming bandwidth to the exact
part of the screen that you're actually looking at. No longer do you have to buy a dedicated
router for a decent streaming experience. Now that's not to say you can't do that,
as Steamlink will just utilize whichever connection is strongest using something called
multi-streaming, but you don't have to. Now all that being said, I think it's a bit of a stretch

But at least for me, the frame is by far the most comfortable VR headset

It's really well balanced, it feels light on the face,
and I was able to play literally six hours of deadlock through Steam Link,
which also goes to show how low the latency really is when using Steam Link,
and then play more VR after that.
But now we can talk about the other side of gaming,
and that's the standalone capability.
As the frame has some pretty capable onboard hardware,
just about doubling the CPU performance of the Quest 3.
Packed with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

And 16 gigabytes of RAM. And here's where this whole video does take a bit of a shift.
For the most part, I've had nothing but good things to say about the frame, but uh,
yeah, here's where it gets not so good. On one side, the standalone capability of frame
is actually awesome. And I don't mean that lightly. We haven't really talked about C-MOS much yet.
We're gonna get to the negative part of this video. Yeah, this standalone stuff, it's awesome!
But between Proton, Fx, Lepton, all packaged together with Arch Linux, you can, on paper,
run just about any Android application on top of quite a few Windows games to, of course,
any ARM-built native Linux application. Officially, though, as of this video,
there's a list of about 130 or so frame-verified games on Steam,
ranging from traditional 2D titles like Hades to some VR titles like Beat Saber or Veil.
And all of these games run pretty well.
It's kinda like how I'd expect a Quest 3.5 or maybe a Quest 4 to run, if that makes sense.
I will say there is noticeably more jank with standalone VR in particular.
PCVR streaming is extremely solid.
standalone VR is, well, and I think the main problem is that this whole platform is brand new,
and some of these frame verified games are just the full PC versions of the game,
which is great, you get the full version of the game, but it feels exactly like what it is,
running a PC VR game on a smartphone. Now that doesn't mean you can't have-

in terms of standalone right now
is the fact that Valve actually got full-on
Half-Life Alyx running on the frame in standalone.

And I should say that just because something isn't frame verified doesn't mean it won't run.
And this is where things do get a little crazy.
The full-on Steam release of Boneworks and BoneLab do run.
Now, you gotta decrease the graphic settings all the way down to low, but that's also kind of expected.
And if you apply that to just about anything, you can run a surprising amount of games.
From Hi-Fi Rush to Big Walk to even old games like Command & Co.
Why right it's because the game gets deliberately make like the games go as
long as we can't for poor people like several copies it's make sense why
wouldn't you want your game to run on as many pcs possible three the majority of
games that I tried did launch and did what is big walk we're just laughing at

redemption to running natively on the frame it's not the best experience
but it does run and it is like no one's gonna play that that's gonna

However, don't expect to be playing for long as here is how long you could expect a standalone VR session to last in

Let me say that again. When playing an intensive game natively on the headset, either VR or not,
you can expect around a 45 minute battery life. Now for streaming, the battery life is significantly
better. You could expect around one and a half to two hours. Bro, what? Wait, you can plug in,
though. Tell me you can plug in. You can plug in there, right? You can plug in.
Well, you can plug in. Yo, this guy's gaming is relatable, bro. Yo, that's legit my setup,

A conversation about my absolute favorite part of the frame, and it's actually the true reason why I think this is probably one of the coolest pieces of tech to have released in the past decade.
Yeah, wireless PCVR is amazing. It's a great device to game on, and I think that people are going to be saying that pretty universally.
But the Steam Frame truly is a lot more than that.
And if you've watched my channel for a long time, you may remember this device called the Simula One from years ago.
It was touted as the world's first portable Linux VR headset.
Now, it didn't exactly pan out as the headset was priced at $3,500,
and I'm not sure if it ever even shipped, but the promise was amazing.
A VR headset with onboard compute and fully open...
I am the android.
I am plugged directly into the Arch Linux.
Installing Python package.
...sour software that you can do anything with, specifically a VR headset running Linux.
And that dream is exactly what the frame is. And I think some of you guys will really get it,
but that truly means so much more than I could even fit in one paragraph.
As after years of the entire VR industry being locked down to Horizon OS with meta-threatening
to break your device the second you touch the bootloader, we are finally actually free.
And it's all on the backs of the contributions of hundreds of people that have built all this
open-source software and a valve for contributing to those open-source projects.
It's actually a really beautiful thing and everyone wins.
But what does a VR headset running Linux even really mean?
Well, for example, you can connect a keyboard and mouse to the headset
and just use it like a desktop from within the headset.
From Blender to video editing to Godot to checking emails or programming,
you just open up the desktop and you've got the full power of Arch Linux on a VR headset
anywhere you go.
All right next to your Steam Linked Game.
Are you editing on this? Okay, okay, okay. Yeah, switch to a big, big PC. Yeah, okay.
Wait, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, wait, that's running Linux locally. Wait,
you can't just stream your own PC? You could just stream any PC you want, right?
It's all running next to full Android applications running natively on headset.
It's crazy. And I mean, just to give you an idea of how much control you really have,
if you wanted to, you could just rmrf and completely nuke your entire install
with one command line. Valve allows you to completely destroy your computer and then will
help you recover it. Because, well, it's your device and you can do whatever you want with
it. And this philosophy has-
Gabe-based. Gabe's based.
Just never existed before in VR.
I felt like you nuke it and then it would just fuck off like that. It just, it just,
you just wipe some shit and you can't even look through the hits anymore. Like bricks
to whatever software is running to like get the fucking correct way to line it up
the horizon everything's like fucked up.
It's not at a scale like this.
And I think something that a lot of people are gonna miss is that Valve kind of inadvertently
solved one of the biggest problems with VR headsets in general.
Because if you think about it, when a headset is not being used on your head,
it's just sitting there collecting dust most likely with a dead battery.
I know my headset would never go dead.

Because while it's not on my head, all I have to do is open up a remote desktop,
sign in and I've got a full computer I could utilize for anything or if you just
SSH into it a full cell phone like yeah yeah you can fucking log in you you can
do the same thing on your phone it will do that with their phone tail does that
he's got like he was fucking he's got like a fucking tablet plugged in it's
like connected to snap cam that he uses to like download lenses it's got like
all I mean I mean you could do that and treat it like any Linux based PC you
can self-post applications run a Minecraft server it's up to you and I
I think you can see how suddenly the Steamframe looks less like just a good VR headset and more
like a pretty versatile tool.
And for someone like me that's been a mega Linux larper for the past few years, if you
have even a lick of Linux experience or you want to get into Linux for the first time,
you can see right away how ridiculously cool this is.
And so the frame is not perfect.

It does not have the highest resolution displays.
If you're looking for the highest immersion you could possibly get, you can definitely
do better with other compromises. The frame also has pretty abysmal battery life and some
applications. And on top of that, it's missing some pretty big features like hand tracking,
full color pass-through, at least out of the box. But if Valve's goal was to build the
best wireless PC VR headset ever made, they definitely accomplished it and more. Now that's
not to say I think everyone should buy it. If you're just looking for straight-up
value to play VR games, picking up a Quest 3 or 3S will get you 90% of the way there.
We can still play Steamlinked games, flat or VR just like the frame and it'll be-
Realistically you only want to place, like when it comes to VR gaming chat, if you're
not doing seated VR, you don't, you're only going to want to use the VR as if like three
hours or something.
But that's still more than the max capacity, but you know, having a little battery pack
in your pocket is not that hard.
You just get a battery pack and put it in your pocket.
Do it a whole lot cheaper, but if you're tired of the meta ecosystem and want something
bit more. Or you're an index user that's been waiting all this time to upgrade, I think you're
gonna be pretty happy with Frame. Personally, I'm excited for all the new people that are gonna
fall in love with VR for totally different reasons than what we've had in the past because, well,
this just enables a few new things that we've never had before. And really, I feel like above
anything, this is just the device that the VR industry deserves right now. It is open and
and it is inviting anyone to do whatever they want with it.
It's not gonna fix the industry overnight.
And I'm not even sure if VR game sales are gonna go up much.
But the kind of people that this device attracts
are the kind of people that are going to be
building this entire community moving forward.
And that's really just so ingrained
into the philosophy of the frame.
This thing wouldn't even exist
if it weren't for the open source community
building projects like Fex and Proton and Leptin.
And of course, the Linux kernel itself
and with Valve contributing back to these open source projects.
And for a VR ecosystem that has become so incredibly shattered,
this is for the first time a device
that actually brings everything back together.

Hi guys, if you're watching this video you're probably wondering my thoughts on the general QL and Valheim and here we go.
So, Valheim is a game that QL, or Quality of Life, the things that make the game easier to play.
Valheim is a game that by the devs design does not have a lot of that.
And what that means is, is that unlike most of the other games in the genre, it purposefully leaves out QOL features, like sorting your inventory,
automatically sorting the chests, crafting from chests, etc.
Now the problem with this is, a lot of people, and even I'm guilty of this, kind of feel like those are basic features and mean styles of games.
And the reason we feel that way is because we play a lot of games like this.
We do sorting, we do ambient chess stuff, we do it all manually, we have done it all the way.
And for us, the idea of crafting from storage, ambient depositing, this is not necessarily like a single game thing, this is a genre thing.
So like, I'm guilty of this too. I have played a sandbox survival game and gone,
well this game doesn't have the QL that I want, I probably won't play it.
So on that note, that brings us to this very interesting question about Valhain, where it's like,
okay, Koto, what do you do in a situation like Valhain where they don't have the things you want in?
They're barriers to your enjoyment, but that is the decision of the devs to do it.
Well, spoiler alert, I feel like you think it's a barrier to your enjoyment, but it's actually not.
to me it's like a hedonistic dribble of like you know quality of life and what happens
is this right what happens is this you're playing survival games raw dog right playing
them raw dog everyone's sorting their shit manually doing everything manually doing
it all like you feel the weight of every item you have to manually move it around
and grab everything one game he gets quality of life right you're like holy shit this
This is so much easier unless it's frictionless compared to the one where you have to do it
manually.
And you get used to this.
And then when you go back, it feels bad because of this relativity, right?
This thing where you relatively, it feels...
And then obviously you play with quality of life.
All the games battle each other in quality of life to the point where eventually everything
auto deposits, everything just, like, you kill them all but instantly drops a loot.
Like, it's some stuff that doesn't even loot.
It's got like a loot filter.
all the shit right and you've got all these affinities when you go back to your base they
go to the right stash tabs you can craft perfectly as one of the things where then you go back
to the raw dog fundamentals right and it feels bad in comparison but actually if you just
raw dog it for a bit and you just you know that you know that you just go play a couple
days without it you actually just get used to it again and it's fine and actually you
you know, there's like a, you know, a more weighty slash satisfying feeling of sorting
your chest out. And actually, you know, okay, this is the chest. And you actually, it's like
a whole nother little micromanagement mini game within your game, which I think doesn't
make the game necessarily worse or better or anything. It's just different. And I
think, you know, it's absolutely not, it's just like you get used to the quality life.
And then when they take it away, it feels bad.
But actually, you just get used to no quality life, and you're back to the same slate of
enjoyment.
And the game, fundamentally, is still good and totally fine without it.
It's just the issue is, if you're a quality life Andy and you go to this game and it's
got no quality life, it's kind of feel bad for the first day or two.
And then you just get used to it.
And it's totally fine.
There's nothing.
And you shouldn't just download quality life.
Right?

The first thing that happens is that I get to set that as well.
Got to respect the decks, because this is their game.
I am one who forgets this kind of stuff all the time,
so I'm like, what the devs want from their game comes first,
and that is to be respected end of story.
So if the developers of this game do not want basic sorting,
if they don't want basic ambient crafting,
if they don't want basic crafting storage,
if they don't want that, there's nothing wrong with that.
That's the devs decision.
So, one thing I used to say is,
I don't like how Valheim doesn't have basic quality of life features.
And that's not really fair for me to say.
Because you can't go into a game with your eyes wide open
knowing it doesn't have something
because the devs don't want it to,
and then start saying the game is done.

So, that's how I want to start this.
Like, just keep in mind,
Everything in this game is by the devs decision. This was a game dev devs for five years, so
That's the first part of one of my say I respect it. I understand it cool
Now that I've said that I fundamentally don't agree with it, and I don't have fun with it

just means you spend this time in your base right and admit you spend more time
running around doing combat and all that all sorts of other things and is it like
is that better or worse and I want to say like base management and macro of
like your base is like its own little mini game and 100% you can you can like
quality life the shit out of that to the point where it's almost non-
Existent and it makes the game worse, but then obviously if you're spending 90% of your time like fucking
Autisticly having to move each individual item across one at a time. It's going to cast time
It's like you're playing projects on board right and you're trying to like move every item and there's no fucking
Craft from containers now that shit. It's gonna it could be too much and there's a couple there's like a balance, right?

out on so much of a journey and so many little weird things like for example my journey with
the boat back here with the ore, I had some crazy thing I couldn't chase by a serpent

my oars through the portal, right which is just like I was just quite alive, what

For me, I have played enough Survival Sandbox games to where I don't find any fun in the
tedium that the devs want in this game.

For me, it kind of sticks out like a sore thumb that this game does not have what
a lot of the other games that I love have.
So what I did is I, for the first time almost ever in my 13 years streaming,
I actually am using mods in my 1.0 playthrough, so I'm using mods from a guy named Azumat.
And if you do explain to point mods, my guy is the most insane quality li- Azumat, that's
like the quick story, the fucking proper containers, that's like the old OP quality
life ones by the way.
That's the best shit.
That's the shit that- Legitimately, like when you go from not having that to having
it, it actually feels like you're cheating, by the way. It feels like you're cheating.
That's how much quality life it is. Like, I could instantly, like if I had that on right
now and I just scaled up my fucking, uh, you know, whip bitch, whatever store, or their
crafting container radius, I would flick in every single one of these BI-led and I wouldn't
have to go through any here. And I could just look up to this thing, press one button,
and then bang, all my shit would quickly buzz it to all the individual chests. And
like that's cool
but actually uh... i wouldn't know where any of my stuff actually is
i'm not actually i wouldn't have any of this management of as to where it's

a flip and blast in this game. Like that basic functionality is enough for me to be able to
focus on all the things that make Valheim magical. I can focus on the things in this game that I
love and I enjoy and that give me enjoyable friction and enjoyable completion. Like because
of those mods I am able to focus on the part of this game I enjoy and I don't feel like I'm swogging
through the parts that I don't to get there. So that is kind of my view on the whole Valheim Q
outfit. To TLDR, I respect the mods for doing it. I personally don't agree with it and I use mods
to make my experience more enjoyable. The next question I get asked a lot is, would you-
Do you know what I'd like to do? Those mods allow you to turn off your brain a lot more
and you can unlock a lot more and I think I think it makes the game more relaxing I
Think I would say it would definitely is a relaxation thing of like you and said I'm gonna be like okay

For sure the guy with mods would just be a faster person because he could store shit faster and he could get that you could crop just faster
So it would be a baby you spend less time in base and what's done going combat
But I don't know that's good
I don't I don't think it necessarily like 100% if you totally optimize and quality like the fucking game to the point
you don't even spend any time on the base at all. I think it's worse.
Like imagine Pee-wee if there was no like fucking with your items and storing stuff and doing anything and you just, it was just permanently in maps.
It would actually make the aspect of mapping worse.
Because that's like, instead of like a, you know, multi-dimensional game, you remove one dimension.
And I feel like having variety in in-game activities, even if it is like sorting out your chest, sorting out your chest, sorting out like your crafting mats and, you know, trying to,
your base tucks out a lot. I think that adds to it.

and that was also like five years ago and these genres have come a long way and a
lot of other a lot of other devs have shown me that in sandbox survival if
you chew a well your way past that tedium the games for me are just more
