cave systems, for what was meant to be a bonding experience.
But deep inside the cave's narrow, twisting passages, one tragic mistake triggered a
desperate fight for survival, leading to one of the most extensive rescue operations ever
attempted.
The following is based on official police records, as well as public statements and
interviews from family members and individuals involved in the rescue work.
The footage has never been seen before until now.
In 2009, 26-year-old medical student John Edward Jones traveled from Virginia to his
home state of Utah for the Thanksgiving holiday, accompanied by his wife Emily, and their one-year-old
daughter.
On November 24, John, his brother Josh and nine other friends and family members, set
out to explore a popular cave system.
Never imagining that one of them would never make it out.
In 1960 an explorer named Dale Green discovered the hyperthermal cave located west of Utah
Lake.
Due to the soft putty-like texture of the clay lining its narrow passages, he named it the Nutty Putty Cave, a nod to the children's toy silly putty.
Afterward it became one of Utah's most popular underground systems, seeing as many as 6,000 groups of explorers each year, including young Boy Scouts.
But as time passed the cave's dangers became impossible to ignore, and rescue calls grew more frequent.
In 2004, 16-year-old Brock Clark was trapped upside down for nearly 14 hours, but ultimately
survived the harrowing ordeal.
Two years later the cave entrance was gated off, and new restrictions required permits
for entry.
To obtain a permit at least one person in each group was required to have prior
caving experience, a measure intended to prevent tragedy.
on November 24, 2009, as 26-year-old John Jones, his brother and their friends made their way
into the cave system. Tragedy was about to unfold. According to police records it was
around 9.30 p.m. when Josh Jones contacted local authorities for help, telling them his
brother John had gotten stuck inside the cave. Though Josh and John were both experienced
cavers, and had been inside Nutty Putty Cave before, a critical mistake had left
John trapped in one of the most horrifying situations imaginable.
While attempting to navigate a well-mapped section of the cave known as the Birth Canal, named for its extremely narrow passageway,
John took a wrong turn and entered an unmapped section of tunnel near an area called Ed's Push.

John likely believed that if he kept moving forward, he would eventually have moved the
tunnel around.
When he reached a small opening, John crawled head first into the sloped passage, not realizing

Originally John slipped into the tunnel and became trapped.
According to police records the constriction point John passed through was estimated to
measure just 10 by 18 inches.
John was pinned head first in an angle of more than 70 degrees, tilted onto his
left side with his left arm trapped beneath him. It was the same area where a teenage
boy had been rescued years earlier, but at roughly 6 feet tall and over 200 pounds, John
would be far more difficult free. By the time emergency crews arrived he'd already been
trapped for nearly an hour, and time was not on their side. The first rescue team
to descend into the cave reached John at 12.38 a.m. on November 25. Nearly four hours
after he first became stuck. John appeared to be in good condition, and to their knowledge
had sustained no physical trauma. However the only part of John that rescuers could see or access
were his feet and part of his calves. The ceiling was so low that any attempt to raise John meant
his feet would hit the ceiling after lifting him only a few inches. Rescue teams worked
tirelessly through the night, staying by John's side and talking to him to keep him calm.
But as the hours dragged on, little progress was made in freeing him, and time was quickly running out.
The prolonged inverted position John was trapped in was placing extreme strain on his body.
As confidence in his rescue began to wane, exhausted search and rescue teams requested more personnel and resources.

received a call alerting him that a rescue operation was underway. Brandon, a cartographer
who mapped much of the Nutty Putty Cave system, was part of a volunteer group called a Utah Cave
Rescue. By the time Brandon and the rest of the volunteer team arrived, rescuers were attempting
to pull John Free using a 4-to-1 pulley system. These efforts were captured in a series of
of videos recorded by the rescue team.

He later remembered John speaking about his wife, Emily, and sharing a secret. She was
pregnant with their second child.

of the cave. Efforts to free him depended largely on his ability to help maneuver his own body
out of the fissure. If he lost consciousness and could no longer assist, any real hope of

But once he introduced himself, he received no response.
According to his account of events, Brandon was able to tap John on the leg, and could
hear him breathing a deep, gurgling breath, as though his lungs were filling with fluid.
Then John began making frantic small kicks with his feet.
But after a second, he stopped.
According to Brandon, this was likely the moment the 26-year-old John Jones passed away.
After 27 hours trapped upside down, the strain on his body was simply too much.
A paramedic would later crawl through the treacherous tunnels in claustrophobic passageways
to confirm his death.
Four minutes to midnight at 11.56 p.m. on November 25, 2009.
John was pronounced deceased.
During this tragic confirmation, authorities determined it was best to leave John's body
in the cave, rather than risk more lives in an attempt to recover him.
While the decision was not well received, John's family ultimately decided they were
at peace with leaving John's body inside, as long as the cave would be permanently
closed.

On December 1st 2009 explosives were placed in the cave and detonated, causing a collapse
of the main passageway leading to the body of John Jones.
The following day the same personnel returned and cemented the opening of Nutty Putty Cave,
sealing it from the public.
According to his family, John was in his second year of medical school at the University
of Virginia in Charlottesville.
He planned and was working toward becoming a pediatric cardiologist.
Following the cave's closure the family mounted a memorial plaque which reads,
Our beloved John passed away at this site.
She was a loving father, a kind husband, a loyal son, and a true and cherished friend.
We miss you and love you always.
A second plaque placed by the family thanks and honors the rescuers who worked tirelessly
to free John.
The final line reads, we invite all who visit John's final resting place to enjoy and respect
this sacred space.
Emily later gave birth to a son who she named John in her husband's memory.

I've heard it said that in the game of patriarchy, women are not the opposing team.
They are the ball.
So for example, we can think of the Super Mario franchise as a grand game being played between
Mario and Bowser.
And Princess Peach's role is essentially that of the ball.

As a plot device, the damsel distresses off in group with other separate tropes,
including the designated victim, the heroic rescue, and the smooch of victory.

a part of the damsel in distress trope itself.
So the woman in question may or may not play the victim role for the entire game or series,
while our brave hero may or may not be successful in his rescue attempt.
All that is really required to fulfill the damsel in distress trope is for a female
character to be reduced to a state of helplessness from which she requires rescuing by a
typically male hero for the benefit of his story arc.
This brings us to the other famous Nintendo Princess.
In 1986, Shigeru Miyamoto doubled down on his Damblin Distress formula with the NES release
of the Legend of Zelda.
This was the first in what would become one of the most beloved action-adventure game
franchises of all time over the course of more than a dozen games spanning a
quarter century all of the incarnation of the princess Zelda having kidnapped
cursed possessed turned a stone or otherwise disempowered at some point

Behind the scenes when you ask DPV5 a question, it frequently thinks they call this reasoning
models, and it thinks by like preparing and sending out other queries, and then

So if you ask it a somewhat complex question, it will run an initial query, and it will
take that response, it will evaluate it using another query, and sometimes it
runs follow-ups until it's happy with the final answer.

an immense amount of electricity, hardwired in through cables connected to the grid.
And data centers also generate heat, so they need to be cooled down, either with air
or often using vast amounts of water, routed through cooling towers.
This warm water when it hits those cooling towers, some of it will evaporate and
to bring the temperature back down.
And inside these massive buildings,
each server in Iraq needs to work in tandem
with the ones around it.
In order to do that, they need to share data
by transferring it through physical cables,
often fiber optic.
The power of data center compute
is really in networking equipment.
We are able to harness massive amounts of compute
across many different servers
and coordinate that computation
to answer questions that we wouldn't be able to answer
on a single computer or on a single machine.
But when you try to translate that computing power into space, things get more complicated.
Satellites already in orbit are typically for one of two purposes, either data collection
like looking at weather patterns or taking satellite images, or communication, like SpaceX's
Starlink satellites.
Both of those cases are less power-intensive than doing real-time computations up in space.
So the satellites for an orbital data center would need to be designed differently, with
even larger arrays of solar panels.
If we were to launch these data centers into space, we would be able to use these
solar panels and get access to inexpensive or essentially free energy from the Sun.
In order to get predictable sun exposure, these satellites would have to maintain a particular
orbit known as a sun synchronous orbit.
If you would put it into sun synchronous orbit, the satellite would pass over the
particular location on the planet at the same time every day.
And if you would pick a particular orbit where you are following the dawn dusk line
with the point at which daytime comes at night time,
the satellite might be able to get nearly constant exposure to solar energy.
But cooling is a problem too.
There's no air in space, so we can't run cool air over the chips like we can on land.
And we can't pipe in extra water to cool down the chips.
Is it cold in space?
So satellites might have to rely on closed-loop radiator panels,
running a fixed amount of water over the chips outside the satellite to cool down,
be it infrared radiation, or a box.
That sounds pretty easy, actually, is what computers do.
So the radiator panels can be heavy, requiring more fuel to launch into space.
Thinking about the design of the satellite is going to be increasingly important because
that will determine the weight profile and the cost of the launch.
Radiation in space is also a concern for computer engineers.
If a high energy particle strikes a GPU, it can literally flip a zero to a one.

That can be the difference between calculating the correct answer to a problem
and getting the wrong one entirely.

These days, it's in my understanding that this has been priced into the chips and shit and
they're more resistant to it.

Useful, we need solutions to prevent or correct those errors.
I would envision three types of strategies.
They had to because of the aviation.
It would be essentially to detect when those errors have arisen and then correct
them.
We could compute the same process, the same job, the same task multiple times and compare the results.
But as you might imagine, this is expensive because instead of having one GPU, you would now have three.
The third option we would have to protect chips and computation from radiation would be just add some sort of physical shielding
that encloses the servers and prevents more of those high-energy particles from hitting that chip.
But there is another problem. How do we get the data from Earth to the satellites and back again?
When we think about communication from Earth to one of these satellites we are relying on radio
frequency communication. And when we think about the satellites communicating with each other,
depending on how precisely these satellites are positioned, they might be able to communicate
via lasers. Essentially one satellite would send a laser signal to another satellite
and they would modulate that laser to communicate data across that signal.
With lasers, data transfer speeds are pretty high, but the problem here is bandwidth.
If you wanted to send quite a bit of data from Earth into space,
it might be better to simply put it on a disk and launch that disk into space.
That might mean that implementation is key.
Instead of sending massive amounts of data back and forth,
send the satellite up preloaded with a training data set for an AI model.
You would pose your question to the satellite.
the questions might be kind of short, right? Because even if you have a massive document
or database that you want to ask a question against, your question itself may only be 20
characters. I have to be honest with you, I feel that this video is finding problems that aren't
there and finding a way to somehow find some fear, mongering. It just is how it feels to me.
So imagine there's a way to send only a few hundred tokens up into space, that is certainly feasible and possible for it.
