For decades, most of the world's chips have been made overseas. But as tensions with China
have risen, it has become clear just how dependent U.S. companies are on foreign factories,
pushing Washington to speed up its effort to bring critical supply chains back home.
Today, Apple is announcing that it will invest $600 billion, this would be in the United
over the next four years.
I wanted to see what this reshoring looks like on the ground
and get a sense of how far we still have to go.
To find out, I suited up.
Definitely the most intense bunny suit of the trip
and joined the world's largest buyer of ships,
Apple, and several of its executives
on an exclusive tour of its partner's facilities
across the desert southwest.

My first stop is the start of the supply chain.
This global wafers facility, which opened last year,
produces silicon wafers, which are the foundation
for what will eventually become iPhone ships.
If they can make the garbage in iPhones,

There's an ancient guy called the Syndicant industry,
and that's in North Carolina.

A lot of the silicon starts from there.

To transform raw silicon into a wafer,
it must first be melted down in this 35-foot-tall machine.
So what you have in here is what they call a silicon crown,
and it's spinning ever so slightly counterclockwise.
It's an amber color because it's almost molten.
It's 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit in there.
They're growing silicon.
The result is this six-foot-long torpedo-shaped ingot
that weighs hundreds of pounds.

It's cooled off.
All of its boat properties are solidified.
This thing is ready to go.
The ingot gets sliced into wafers.
Then they're polished and boxed up.

Some of these processes, even when you put them in line,
can take months and months to get the quality
and the purity down to where they need to be.
And that's just the nature of the demanding specs
that we're being asked for.

Concentrating chip supplies on an island
that could be invaded, or face steep U.S. tariffs,
or get hit by a major earthquake,
is a big risk to Apple's business.
Much of the company's supply chain
relies on partners like Global Wafers,
itself a Taiwan-based company.
But Apple is a large customer,
so it has a lot of leverage to push suppliers to make...
If some elaborate operation, somebody was to infiltrate and get a machine loaded on a truck and bring it home.
Wouldn't they have an optimization approach to do it?
Take more products in the US.
Apple's not building this factory, right?
We're not building the factory, but we are driving our suppliers to use this factory.
And so one of the things that we can do to help global wafers is to have our engineers qualify the wafers that are coming out of their production line.
line so that our founder partners then can purchase from them. If we didn't qualify that and spend
that time and it's very intense work, they wouldn't be able to use it to make chips for us. So we
can drive them to use locally sourced components like these wafers. By qualify, Tom means that the
quality of these wafers needs to be verified before they can be turned into chips. That process
is going much faster, Global Wafers told me, because of Apple's pressure on chip makers to use these
these wafers. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, or TSMC, is the world's largest chip maker.
It takes blank silicon wafers and turns them into chips. It's the next stop in Apple's
supply chain. Stretching over 1,100 acres, TSMC's Arizona
site is one of the largest construction projects in the U.S. and is projected to cost $165
billion. This facility is crucial to Apple's reshoring efforts, but it's still a work in
projects. Only one fabrication plant is currently making chips on the site, while two more are under construction.
The vast majority of TSMC's production still takes place in Taiwan, where it has four facilities that pump out more than 100,000 chip wafers per month.
The Arizona facility may not reach similar volumes for a decade or more.
The complexity involved in scaling up manufacturing also means that the chips made here in Arizona are still a generation behind chips made in Taiwan.
You're already doing this in Taiwan. Why can't we just, you know, do this, plop it in and do it by your end?
Why does it take so much time?
It's really complicated in terms of the structures, because remember what we're building is atom level.
It really requires a complex infrastructure, requires a complex equipment set that you can't just plop in from anywhere.

put it in the incredibly sophisticated machines,

TSMC doesn't allow filming inside its plant.
It even covered our phone cameras as a precaution.
But the machines inside the TSMC fab that patterned that wafer come from ASML,
A Dutch company that operates a training facility just down the road in Phoenix.

The workers behind me,
the most sophisticated machine ever built by man.
It's inside these that ships are patterned to have billions of transistors.
ASML's Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography Machine works by shooting lasers into molten tin
to create a wavelength of light that doesn't exist naturally on Earth.
on Earth. The lights paints hundreds of chips onto wafers flying around in more than 20
genes. Because chips can have dozens of layers, this process repeats over and over. What's
more, transistors have to be placed with nanometer level precision or the whole wafer
can be ruined. If you are building a chip fab, you need machines like this because this
is where the magic happens. These machines cost between $100 and $400 million each.

In this week's episode, Tesla is building a Gigafactory for artificial intelligence, Optimus
goes digital and XAI hits a major reset. Tesla is making a giant leap beyond vehicle manufacturing
to throw their hat into the ring of high precision computer chips, a product that has quickly
become one of the most valuable resources in the entire world. Elon Musk recently shared
a Tesla is preparing to launch its TerraFab project in about a week in a post on X. At
first glance, the name doesn't say much, but the idea behind it-

slimmer and slimmer. Just look at GPUs. There's nothing you thought about upgrading your GPU.

This could be Tesla's Gigafactory moment for AI.
To understand why, it helps to look back at Tesla's history.
When Tesla announced Gigafactory 1 in 2014, the plan sounded almost unrealistic.
The company was still producing a relatively small number of vehicles with the Model S and Model X at the time.
AI 6 moves further into robotics and data centers, supporting both inference and large scale compute.
It's been a stay aligned with my financials.
Now, if the Tesla tariff ad project is about building the hardware for AI at scale, the
next story is about what that AI is actually meant to do.
This is where things start to come together.
See, Elon Musk recently introduced a new project.
It makes sense.
A lot of these other products need AI, and if they have to outsource and it's way more
costly, if they make other people do it, if they do it themselves and they run it on their
own product, I mean, it's the win.
called Digital Optimus or Macro Heart. In a post on X, he described it as a joint XAI Tesla project,
adding that it is part of Tesla's investment agreement with XAI.
He also outlined how the system works. Grock acts as the master conductor providing high-level
understanding and direction while Digital Optimus handles execution by processing and
actioning the past five seconds of real-time computer screen video and keyboard mouse actions.
Elon compared this setup to the way the human mind operates.
You can think of it as digital optimus AI being system 1, the instinctive part.
This compute, it is already in place. It might be a new initiative, but the parts that it needs
have already been laid out years before. Vehicles, charging stations, distributed compute across a
global network, but overall the timeline of digital optimus is the most surprising part.
When asked when digital optimus could be ready, Elon gave a simple answer.

to deploy a system capable of performing real-time digital work before the end of the year.

It gets digital optimist shows how Tesla and XAI are starting to operate as one system.
Tesla provides the hardware, the real-time execution, and the scale, and XAI provides the
reasoning, planning, and intelligence and the result is something completely new and potentially

leadership. Ashok Elshwami, who leads Tesla's autopilot and AI software efforts, is now
leading the digital optimist slash macro hard project. Ashok has been one of the central figures
behind Tesla's progress in autonomy, helping lead the team to release full self driving supervised,
and more recently toward early deployments of unsupervised full self driving in Austin.
That track record matters because building a system like Digital Optimus is all about quick and heavy execution.
Tesla has already shown that it can take a complex AI problem, train it on real-world data, and deploy it at scale.

So we're talking about maybe 15 million pounds a day of crude oil and refined products that is disconnected from the global market.

That's why the price of jet fuel and the cost of your summer vacation has skyrocketed.
But even if this Strait were to reopen tomorrow, getting jet fuel production back to pre-war levels
and getting ticket prices down could take a long time.
Well, how much fuel is affected by the closure of the Strait depends a lot on where you are in the world.
Europe has historically sourced around a quarter of its jet fuel from Gulf nations via the Strait,
so its supplies could soon be running low.
Europe, we have maybe six weeks or so jet fuel left.
But while supplies may be blindling, ticket prices in the region aren't yet going too high.
That's because here many airlines hedge their fuel costs, effectively paying in advance for a
certain quantity of fuel at a fixed price. Budget carrier EasyJet, for example,
has hedged 70% of its fuel needs for the second half of 2026 at a price.
