Okay, let's see it. It's real bad now the steam machine is probably the most anticipated gaming PC of all time
I would argue alongside the steam deck one of the most important, but that doesn't mean that our last two weeks with it
Have been all good. There are the highlights like the
unbelievably polished experience of SteamOS, not to mention perfect integration with your home media setup,
but there's also been the lower lights, performance in the latest titles being a big one alongside some hard truths.
It costs more than we hoped, and Valve confirmed they feel it.
I was right and everybody else was wrong.
Again, as always.
Same way, but if you can stomach the upfront investment,
Valve's Gabe Cube is yet another massive step on their now decade-plus journey of saving gamers
from the closed ecosystems that demand pricey subscriptions. And it is hands down the best
solution that I've ever seen to solving the inconvenience of PC gaming on the couch. It's
not the biggest or the baddest, but that one-two punch is why the Steam Machine is so damn exciting.
It combines the strengths of PC gaming with the conveniences of console gaming and all in a nearly
silent cube that's about half the size of a real console. But this kind of hype
can now possibly help to live up to gamers expectations if we're being
realistic. Probably not. But I still love the steam machine for what it is today
and I'm really excited about what it means for the future of gaming. And I'm
also excited. Okay, but actually this time to tell you about this companion

We unboxed and explored the setup of the steam machine
over on Schwinnstück this morning,
and we gave our in-depth thoughts
on the controller last month.
So we're gonna be laser focused on the experience.
Hey guys, give me the TLDR and the controller.
I didn't get one because they were sold out.
How much is the controller good or not?
It's from Portal.
I didn't play Portal.
I just thought it was a gay heart cube. It's good, okay.
Of the Steam Machine software. I didn't even know. Right out of the gate. If you're a Steam
deck or a big picture user, you're going to feel right at home. The Steam Machine comes
with SteamOS pre-installed, Valve's Linux based operating system that they've spent
over 10 years optimizing from gaming. Why did it take so long? Well, because most games
still don't support Linux native. Yeah, there it is. But thanks to Proton, a translation
layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux, we found that almost any game
made for Windows runs surprisingly well on SteamOS. No command line, no driver
conflicts, press the button and play your game. It's been one of the Steam
decks greatest strengths and that remains true here. And even if somehow you
don't like SteamOS, well great news. Valve takes a very open approach to their
hardware. You do whatever you want. You should say your hardware, you know? The way it should be.
So the Steam Machine allows you to install any OS you want, even Windows.
It's just that if you did so, you would lose out on some of its best features.
Like a personal favorite of mine.
The ability to suspend your software and resume at the push of a button.
Just like a console. Seriously.
Thank you Valve.
We did find that there were some times that resuming a game would take a little longer than you'd like.
But most of the time it was really quick.
I'm talking like 5 seconds, which is a huge edge over booting up your PC.
up your PC, loading your launcher, and starting a game.
We did notice that sometimes the SteamOS UI would become laggy
while a game is suspended.
But realistically, we're dealing with peer-release software
here, and with how much Valve has refined SteamOS on the deck
over the last few years, which is much less powerful hardware,
I can say confidently that they're
going to get that sorted.
The other big one for me is HDMI CEC.
It doesn't have the best marketing behind it,
and it doesn't have a sexy name.
In fact, most people don't even really think about CEC,
because when it's working properly,
you literally aren't supposed to even notice it,
but it is hugely important to the living room experience,
especially if you have multiple devices.
CEC, if you're not familiar, is a protocol
that's built into the HDMI standard
that allows your various media devices to communicate with
and even control each other
without running any additional cables.
The most-
Oh, okay, okay, yeah, there's, I mean, there's programs that do this, like mouse without borders, etc.
This is pretty, okay, I get it now.
Common uses for it are allowing your soundbar volume to be controlled by your TV remote,
or having your Android, MediaBox, and AV receiver power each other on and off in sync.
Now, most PCs-
This reminds me of, like, did you guys ever have in like middle school or high school that, like, you would take a universal remote into the class,
And then you would turn off the TV because the TV would recognize the universal remote as like, you know, the remote and you'd put it in your backpack seventh grade, bro, like
It took that bitch 30 minutes to figure it out.
Straight up, do not support it.
This is both a hardware and a software problem,
and there's no hint of a solution on the horizon.
So achieving any kind of seamless operation involves
like janky IR receiver boxes
and or complicated home theater automations.
Well, Valve hated that.
So they built their own software
and custom motherboard for the Steam machine
that from our experience, just plain works.
We press the Steam controller button,
it turns on everything, selects the right inputs
and bingo-bongo-bongo, seconds later you are gaming exactly where you left off.
But there's more to a good gaming machine than just living room integration as Microsoft so painfully learned.
Go to Internet Explorer.
Oh, nice.
And the Steam Machine's raw gaming hotspot needs a fair bit to be desired, unfortunately.
Let's see the gameplay.
It's not.
I'm ready.
Terrible.
Valve chose a semi-custom 6-core Zenfone CPU with 16 gigs of DDR5 memory,
rated to 5600 megatransfers per second, alongside a semi-custom GPU with 8 gigs of dedicated
VRAM.
So that's more CPU performance and a lot more RAM than the current crop of mainstream
gaming consoles.
But the current crop of gaming consoles is 6 years old now, and if we look closely at
the specs for these chips...
At this point, I'm still not convinced that this is a superior product to a PS5.
like I'm gonna buy it but like I mean especially for like such a higher price
like I don't know they look more semi than custom with a stronger
resemblance to laptop chips from 2023 now according to Valve that's not a
problem for most buyers the steam machine should outperform approximately 70% of
the gaming PCs that are out there in the wild and there's no way anything to go
by developers will squeeze blood from a stone optimizing for a popular
hardware can sound like this one, but with all of that said, I still feel pretty strongly
that these are not the kinds of parts that I would expect in a 4K gaming machine, even
with the asterisk of FSR upscaling, but I could be wrong, right?
So let's take a look at the numbers.
Right out of the gate, the Linux port of Shadow of the Tomb Raider absolutely crushed Valve's
target hitting over 120 FPS at 4K.
Wow, that's really good at 4k. Holy shit
Personally, I wish they would do testing at like 1440p or 1080 because I think that's what way more people play out
I feel like most people don't really play at 4k. So it's like like I mean, how many what do you guys play at?
Yeah, what do you guys play at because like to me I do 1440 a
Oh, a lot of people say 4K.
Okay, damn.
Most people, it seems like they're 1440, but there's a good...
There's more 4Ks than I expected.
That, but that is an eight-year-old game, and sadly, the rest of our suite ended up sitting
with average frame rates between 40 to 50 FPS.
In fairness to Valve, some of these games were probably running at settings that are
a little ambitious for them.
38 FPS for Doom Dark Ages, that's crazy, on low.
Horizons, 40 FPS, that's really bad, man.
The Steam Machine, and you could absolutely
turn Cyberpunk, for instance, down a little bit
and get a more fluid experience,
but that wasn't the case for all of them.
Doom the Dark Ages, for instance,
was already cranked nearly as low as it could go.
This whole situation feels like
it's completely self-inflicted.
Like if Valve had never said 4K gaming at 60 FPS,
and had they instead offered a more nuanced,
yeah, 1080p on medium details,
maybe higher ultra for older titles,
and in some cases, you know what,
4K upscaling looks pretty darn good.
I wouldn't even have to be talking about this.
I don't think that would really matter
because people are still gonna create
the value proposition versus a console
and then make a decision based off
of that value proposition.
So even if they don't say that,
I think that people still would come to this conclusion,
But yeah, I mean, Linus is technically right,
but I don't think it really moves the needle
in a meaningful way.
Now I have to go spelunking for what the heck
Valve was talking about.
And it seems like for newer titles,
what they meant was low settings with FSR set
as low as ultra performance,
which means we are upscaling from the mere 720p
base resolution all the way to 4K Ultra HD.
What could go wrong?
These settings, all right, sure.
All five of our games did hit averages,
that are comfortably above 60 FPS, but at these settings,
all five of our games also looked pretty ugly.
And there's more bad news.
Even with 28 ray tracing cores,
RT is pretty much a non-starter on this thing.
This is true both for games where it's an option,
like Cyberpunk, where we saw an average of 15 FPS
at 1080p Ultra, and especially true for games
that force its usage, like Indiana Jones,
or Doom the Dark Ages, where only one configuration
tested, managed to consistently stay above 60 FPS.
He says who?
That was the handheld one, right?
Yep, yikes.
To be clear, it's not the end of the world today,
but whether you love ray tracing or hate it,
there will be more titles in the future
that will require hardware support for it.
And the steam machine just plain doesn't have the horses.
Once again, I'd love to be proven wrong here.
Valve did contact us hours before recording this
to say they are aiming to patch it,
But guys, it's a 7600M GPU. There is no pack.
If people spend $1,000 on something, I think they're going to want it to be better than a PS5
by a considerable degree. So the difference between, like, let's say a Steam Deck and this
is that a Steam Deck has an intrinsic value of being a portable console. And this doesn't have
that intrinsic value. They're both boxes that play video games. So when one box that plays video
games is $600 and the other box that plays video games is either $1,100 or $1,050 or $1,350
you're going to make that value assessment you are. PS5 Pro is 900. Fucking the load.
What?

half that I can trace that will lead to acceptable performance on this hardware, especially in
light of your unqualified claims of 4K 60fps, which still wouldn't be a huge problem.
To be fair though, that's comparable to the $1300, because that's a two terabyte.
You saw that, right?
So this is a $400, a $400 is a lot of dollars.
Or the big, like, elephant-like PlayStation 5.
On paper, the Steam Machine and the PS5 trade blows, but in real life, I'm sorry, Valve,
it just doesn't seem to work out that way.
Yeah, it's because PS5 is a much bigger platform, so it's much more highly optimized for.
That's the reason why.
And PlayStation and Sony have better quality control to make sure the games are optimized
in a way that make them play better.
That's the difference, I think.
Now, I do have a disclaimer here, the PS5 doesn't support any kind of frame-time analysis,
so any numbers we give you guys are going to be kind of rough and tumble ad hoc.
We explain the methodology, by the way, of both this test and the rest in our accompanying
labs article, we'll have that linked down below, but anyway, in God of War Ragnarok,
the base PS5, which upscales from 1440p to 4k, was chilling around 75-78 FPS.
Meanwhile, in the same scene, the Steam Machine, with mostly medium settings and FSR set to quality, landed in the 60-263.
That's called a flop-a-rooski.
That's bad.
You see, because the number is smaller.
Ranged. This isn't the end of the world. We actually found that upscaling our performance more than we expected, and at 1440p native, we were able to break 70 FPS, even with our details turned up, but what it isn't, is a win.
With that said, choosing the right games and enabling variable refresh rate is going to help to mitigate some choppiness, and you can absolutely have a really solid gaming experience on this box.
Also, as these things go out in the wild, I do expect Valve's Verified for Steam Machine program
to incentivize developers to optimize for this hardware specifically. It's just that...
You're never going to have the level of optimization that you have for a mainline console like a
PlayStation 5. I mean, PlayStation 5 is the biggest console right now. It is. Actually,
I don't know about that Steam that Switch 2 might be bigger. But like, I think they're really not
competing with the Switch. They're competing with the PS5. Ultimately, like, you're just going to have
way more opti- just wait? Alright, cool. Yeah, I mean, I think that PS5 is still gonna have better
optimization. Keep your expectations in check. It's not magically gonna get way faster. Coming
back to good news though, the Steam Machine's download speeds are solid. We saw close to full
gigabit speeds over a wire and a little less than half of that via Wi-Fi 6E. That's partially,
probably thanks to Valve's four dedicated antennas in this box. Two for Wi-Fi, one for Bluetooth,
and one for steam controllers, and we also saw an average power draw of just 175 watts under heavy load
with a mere 66 watts. I feel like that sounds really low.
Cool, that's super low, right?
That's why it experienced the steam machine landing right in line with the PS5 for acoustics
and averaging just 68 and 66 degrees across our CPU and GPU respectively. Good job, Valve.
And good job making this such a repairable and serviceable machine. Not only can the steam machine
be easily opened up, including the ability to upgrade both the RAM and SSD, but Valve
has once again partnered with iFixit to make guides and replacement parts available.
Absolutely.
That's really cool that they did that.
That is, that's awesome.
Really amazing.
Yeah.

Another highlight is Valve's open approach to peripherals.
I mean, can you imagine Nintendo just allowing any old thing to be plugged into their precious gaming machine?

Meanwhile, in Valve Land, the Steam Machine played nicely with every mouse, keyboard, or headset that we plugged into it,
including random Bluetooth accessories.
One thing to note is that some of our audio accessories were a little quieter than usual on the Steam Machine,
even with the volume maxed, but, again, this feels like one of those, don't worry, Valve's gonna fix that.
Yeah, they can probably fix that.
And yes, finally, to something Valve couldn't fix, the detail you've all been waiting for.
You can order your steam machine today, and it will cost $1,015 for the 512 gig storage version.
$10 million.
$1350 for the 2TB.
Then, if you want a steam controller run...
Indicated once again.
Well then, that's another $69 on top of that.
I think we better talk about this.
Is that reasonable?
It is reasonable in this current market conditions, but it is you sound like you're being held hostile.
It's too much money, man. Like, I think that once you break into the realm of the four digits,
people's expectations change. And I think ultimately you're are going to eat. There are
competitive advantages that the steam like the the steam cube has. Like, for example, it can play a
a lot of PC games that a PS5 wouldn't have. But I'm just seeing a small target,
activatable audience for a product like this. I just like, I don't see where,
because anybody that has a lot of money is probably already using a gaming PC. Anybody
who doesn't have a lot of money is probably already using a console where they have something else,
like a Steam Deck. So like, where really, where's the big audience for this?
I just I'm not I'm not seeing that. I mean, yeah, by the parts makers. So
reasonable yes but like is it too high? Yes. And that's a tough thing. I think it's
fair to say that both of those things are true. Based on the costs that Valve is
seeing and also based on other options that are available in the market, it can
both reasonably priced and still too high. I was really hoping that this was
gonna bring PC gaming to the mainstream living room, that I could pitch all my
friends and be like, oh, I've got a steam machine, it's so cool, but this is a
premium price, even though I wouldn't say it's a premium price. I don't think it
would be a premium price if it was a premium like, like if it was able to
run video games at a higher level that the PS5 Pro can, and it could do so like
comfortably, I think that you would really be looking at a great product. You would be, you'd be
looking at a great product. And so, like this is really what I could see happening in the next five
to 10 years. I could see this product being refined, the development process for PC related
video games being more, you know, curated for this type of device. And then because of that,
you would have further optimization that would as a second order effect, make it more competitive
in the market versus a PS5, in the same way of what's happened with a Steam Deck for example.
So I think that that's probably what could happen. But coming right out of the gate
with this, I don't really see a huge market for it. This is a great idea, maybe for like
10 years from now, maybe five years from now. But besides that, I really don't know. Doesn't
matter, it'll sell out. Yeah, yeah, it does matter. Like releasing a good product matters
absolutely, and releasing a product that has weaknesses matters absolutely.
I doubt they'll let the concept die. I mean, they obviously didn't because this is their second attempt at it, right?
And in fairness to Valve, they did telegraph this.
They were explicit when I came down there for the reveal that it was not
going to be subsidized by the 30% cut that they're going to take on games because
they have no guarantee that people are actually going to run SteamOS on this or buy any games.
And the PS5 is such a giant, even bigger elephant in the room than I even said before.
The fact that you can still, even at the increased price, buy a PS5 for $600 US, or a PS5 Pro,
which is a much more powerful machine for $900.
And then you'd still have money left over for your first year of PS Plus.
And both of those PS5s include a controller too, so that's going to cover almost another
year.

I mean, you never think about that, but yeah, it comes with a controller.

If you're keeping it for a long time, and let's talk TCO,
that's a term that not everybody's familiar with,
one side of like business or the data center,
it's total cost of ownership.
It often gets said that on the PC side,
pricing of games is a huge boon compared to consoles.
But you actually opened my eyes to the PlayStation Store
having a lot of deals.
There was a few weeks ago where there wasn't a sale going on
and people freaked out.
So I think there's sort of a myth around steam sales being
way better than console, but I think we bounced out.
That being said, you can play online games for free on a Steam machine and on a PlayStation.
You're going to be spending $110 a year.
That is brutal.
A lot of money. That's a game and a half.
Another big benefit, though.
I mean, I don't think that people see it the same way because, again, that's the reason
why everybody's moved to subscription services is because people are much more willing.
My dad would always talk about things that way.
He's like, why don't I want to spend this much money per month because if you multiply
that over like three years it's like this much money right but I don't think
that's the way most people's brains work and I think that's why everything's
moved to a smaller you know bite-sized subscription so people can tolerate it
and they don't realize how much money they're spending like most people don't
have that long-term thinking and that's the reason I mean obviously they don't
that's why so many things have shifted just on this accessory support
Nintendo's not the only one that keeps things locked down with respect to
plugging things into their consoles. I mean for years, entire brands that make
gaming headsets, their only reason for existing at all was that they managed to
get the license to produce compatible Xbox gaming headsets. They were just awful
audio quality, like had no... They were so bad. Like I had to try out so many gaming
headsets. People always wanted to use a gaming headset for a sponsor and I tried
out every single gaming headset and I think that they're all bad. Like the
The only good one that I have is this is the Sennheiser Game One headset and I use this
all the time.
Like, I've had, like I had this and I had before this the Microsoft live, like live
chat headset.
And if I buy another one, just get audiophile headphones, yeah, I mean, you might as well
just buy a really nice pair of, you know, like Boyce or Bose or Sennheiser headphones
for like $300, $200, and they're gonna last for a long time.
The reason for existing, other than licensing, we're living through a renaissance in the
PC space, but to find something good for the PlayStation 5 that doesn't have, that has
back paddles for less than 200 bucks, so impossible.

stock dual-sense to add paddles to it, gonna be pretty freaking cool.
I don't even know if I care about bringing this up,
but there is one thing the PS5 does
that the Steam Machine for now doesn't, and that's VR.

I don't think most PlayStation gamers are gamers.

I don't think there will ever be another PSVR.
I mean, the other white elephant in the room
is the custom PC you build in a white case.

So like right now you might be strapped for cash
So you're gonna build a you know like nuts and bolts computer
But like maybe in a year from now you get a better job

You can buy a 5080 right and like then you can improve it immediately
like the good thing about building your own like this is the truth, right? Like is that building your own PC will almost always, there was like one exception during COVID because of, you know, a supply line thing. But for the most part, buying and making your own PC is going to be cheaper than buying a pre a premade. And this is just true.
just true. Now, buying a premade is a luxury, it's a premium service, and there are advantages
that come with that, and there's things that like, but again, you're paying for somebody
else's labor effectively to put this together, and also to ensure that the parts are supposed
to fit together. But if you're balling on a budget, my best advice for you is, you know,
if you don't already have a PC, my best advice is actually if you already have one upgrade
your current PC, and then learn by the mistakes that you make while upgrading what you need
to do differently, like upgrade, get more RAM, and then learn that, wait a minute, my
motherboard doesn't support this type of RAM, and then learn that, oh my God, well now I
need a higher wattage power supply, and that's how you learn how to build a computer.
How many of you guys made that same mistake?
I made that mistake.
I did that myself, and I think that's the best way to do it.
But if you have enough disposable income, building your own PC, there's a million resources
for it, and if you have a lot of disposable income, buying one is totally fine too.
There's nothing wrong with it, but you will always be able to build something better than
what you can get basically off the shelf.
And you can also, more importantly, you can upgrade it.
And that's the big weakness that a console and also this Steam Box have, is that finding
Parts that are able to integrate into that is going to be a lot harder to do
It's impossible for a ps5 and for this it will be probably a lot harder like yes
They have some opportunities and some options, but you know like some is not a lot
I'll you I think we're gonna see better up creativity and service ability. There's so many better performance

It could have just been the skin, but no.
They put in the extra effort
manufacturing something this detail at this scale is more complicated than you
guys probably. All you got to do is use the included embedded Allen key to pop
the back panel off and then start assembling your steam machine inside
the case. And once you've got the case open, Deepran didn't miss any details
here. They added these rubber strips on the inside to make sure that your machine
gets that extra bit of padding, not to mention is oh so satisfying to slide in.
Once the machine's in, you just pop the back plate back on, and, well, like David said,
our steam machine isn't B-roll right now.
The point is, boom, companion cube.
And it's got a few other notable features.
It's got removable port covers, a removable front panel with a gap to show off the LED
strip, and a mechanical button pass through so you can hit the power switch.
In terms of intake and exhaust, the bottom is fully open, and on the backside, you've

with full access to all of the IO.
And if you're worried about the volume of air
that's coming in from the bottom,
you can actually reverse the little rubber feet
to make it stand just a little bit taller.
