So they were a civilization on the rise, but they were trying to get back to where they'd

So that idea of a cycle, that idea of, as you say, a civilization at dusk, I think it's
there in the palm, it's subtle, but when you look at the history as well, and you look
the idea that, you know, when they went on Earth, these walls of old palaces that were
crumbled, they called them Cyclopean walls, because they thought only a giant could have
built such grand walls. They had this idea of the greatness of this part of civilization.
And so I became interested by that collapse, that what they call the catastrophe, the Bronze
Age collapse, what happens between the events of the Trojan War and Homer. And so, yeah,
I think it's something that from a modern perspective is, it's frightening and interesting
and intriguing. I think for me, it partly comes out of having worked on Alperheimer before this,
which is very much a film about the end of the world, about the end or collapse of civilization
ultimately. So I think, yeah, I definitely carried that sensibility into this adaptation of the Odyssey.
I mean one thing that captured me was the, yeah, I mean like I just think that you shouldn't try to reframe things

characterizing somebody and the trite version of this or the criticism is often leveled
at movies in general is, oh, the character has to be made sympathetic so the character
is manipulated in different ways or changed in different ways.
Look at, that's not even true, look at Achilles and Troy.
The most unsympathetic character that you could possibly have.
A, fucking a disobedient adulterer, an asshole obsessed with his own vanity, somebody who'd
just like, you know, on the way over to killing somebody, just talk shit to some kid.

You don't need to make people sympathize with the character.

And I think that the best counter example to that is Lord of the Rings.
Whenever Lord of the Rings starts, you know they're going to beat Sauron.

And so the ending of the movie was not a subversion, it was a catharsis.
I don't think that it's always true, but in a general sense it is.
And the fact that that mechanism is identifiable to people doesn't invalidate it, and part
of that mechanism is saying, are we going to treat greatness as an absolute or coming
from a democratic, coming from a more idealized philosophical state that we live in in today's
world where we want to view it.

community, and making black people think that they were going to get killed by a police
officer when all they really had to do was comply with the police officer and not try
to grab the officer's gun.
I think that's true, and it scares them.
And like again, like yeah, you shouldn't listen to the media, but some people do, and the
media is trying to push this.
Movies, news, and activism reinforce the idea that America is irredeemably racist against
